Alright, I know there are about a million litter box review posts out there. So hear me out about why you should listen to me. You should listen to me because I am obsessed with my cats and have used the Tidy Cats Breeze Litter System for about 7 years now. Weve purchased three totalthat includes buying a second when we adopted our second cat in 2014 and replacing the first one we got in 2013.
So Im going to tell you why I think the Tidy Cats Breeze Litter System is the best litter box for an apartment or other small space. Were pretty much experts on this topic because we lived in a 690 square foot apartment when we first got Henry, and now we live in a townhouse without a basement to hide the litter box in.
Having a great litter system is absolutely essential for cleanliness, odor control, and mess control. And I did a ton of research and am still totally happy with our choice. So lets chat about why I initially chose the Breeze Litter System when we adopted Henry.
Is There An Alternative For The Tidy Cats Breeze Pellets Or Pads
Yes! I would recommend getting a full starter pack with a litter box, pellets, and pads. But you can venture into off-brand options. Lets chat about some alternatives for the Tidy Cats pellets and pads. First, lets chat alternatives to the Breeze pee pads, which we can speak to from firsthand experience.
The are pretty much interchangeable with the Tidy Cats brand. The purple-colored pad is made of PE film with an absorbent core and an effective moisture-lock area. They are also easily disposable with quick cleanup and have a fresh scent to help with odor control. Like a lot of off-brand items, they are so similar that you probably wont notice any differences, so why not try them? Lets just leave it at that.
As for the litter pellets, wellwe havent gone off-brand yet. We buy the larger packs of pellets and pour out what we need. But Ive done a bunch of research online about changing what we use to save a bit of cash. And heres what I found.
Many reviewers say that pine platinum natural non-clumping litter with baking soda is an amazing solution. Its much cheaper than the Tidy Cats solution, but Im not sold yet. Heres why. When the kitties wee on to the pellets, they do break down in to sawdust that falls down into the pads on the tray. Meh, sounds a bit messier than the Tidy Cats pellets.

We love the Tidy Cat Breeze Original Litter System because it has all most cat owners need. Without any extra bells or whistles, it takes care of harsh odors and makes cleaning a breezeno pun intended. The dehydrating litter pellets are specifically designed to keep your kitties safe.
It has no harmful dust that can irritate your cats senses. It also reduces tracking, so theres no mess to clean up every time your cat walks out of the box. Underneath is a super absorbent pad for ultra odor control, keeping your home smelling fresh no matter when your cat uses the bathroom.
Your cats poop maintains form in the pellets while the urine trickles down to the pad, making it easy to sift. However, that might be better than picking up pellets off of your floor each time they go to the bathroom.

The litter box itself contains three parts: sidewall, base, and drawer. Everything came disassembled upon delivery of the product. Putting them together was pretty intuitive though. The product came with easy-to-follow instructions, too!
Sidewall
The sidewall, or the corners of the litter box, basically sits right on top of the base. Its just the right height to give our cat enough privacy as she does her business. It also keeps the pellets right where they should be: inside the box. Our cat tends to kick away the pellets a bit too hard sometimes, so there was no sweeping necessary this time!
The scoop also comes with a hook on the back. You can hang it on the sidewall to avoid misplacing it. But my cat gets a little bothered by anything hanging on her litter box. So I have a separate container for the scoop.
I also had the option to buy the Tidy Cat Breeze Hooded Litter Box system, which was the closed litter box version. But I thought the cover would be too much work to clean. Plus, Ive always used an open litter box for my fur baby anyway.
The Base
Basically, the base is where the Tidy Cats Breeze Cat Litter Pellets sit. It resembles a sieve to sift my cats liquid waste from the solid waste. When our cat pees, instead of forming a clump, it seeps through the holes of the base. Now, all I need to scoop regularly is the solid waste.

Tidy Cats doesnt recommend it. But, Ill be honest. Weve done it back in the day when there were just a few small pieces of the pellets attached to the poo. Ill say this, thoughget a litter genie. Its been really helpful for us for odor control.
If you have a kid, its the same concept as a diaper genie. It helps trap the odor using a trap door system for the waste. Then you can just change out the bags when they are full. Highly recommend. Just hold your breath when changing the bags, whether baby or cat poo.
Size And Style Of The Box
This is the most important factor to consider when selecting the Breeze Cat litter system.
It is available in three sizes regular, extra-large, and hooded. Most cats hate cramped litter boxes and will refuse to use small boxes.
Select the size that is suitable for your kitty. Measure your kitty from nose to tail when it is extended.
The box you select should be at least comparable to this measurement if not bigger. You must also select a box that is as wide as your cat is long.
Hooded boxes could be too restrictive although some cats love their privacy. It is a good idea to know what your cat prefers.
If your cat sprays, then select the hooded system as it can keep messes and leaks minimum.

One of the absolute best things about this litter system is that it is so easy to clean. It consists of four plastic parts: the scooper the sides, which clip on to the main body the main body and the tray that slides in to the main body and holds the pee pads.
Once you remove the pad and litter pellets, its easy to take everything apart and clean it. When we lived in apartments, we just took everything apartment and cleaned it in the shower.
Id spray it down with an enzyme cleaner specifically designed for cats. Then, after that sit for 10ish minutes, Id rinse it off and clean everything off with scrubbing bubbles or some sort of similar cleaner. Then Id let everything dry in the bathroom for an hour or so. Use a hair dryer if you need to speed up the drying before adding new pellets in. We use this method now in a townhouse when the weather is bad or cold.

All in all, we loved the concept of the Tidy Cats Breeze Cat Litter Box System but, unfortunately, were not impressed with some aspects of the product itself. The litter box was sturdy and easy to assemble, plus it was very easy to use the slide-out tray to replace the pee pad. We didnt like the pellets because they were too large and somewhat difficult to scoop our test cats also did not like them for solid waste. The unit was great, however, for urine and contained that odor well.
It is important to note that Tidy Cats recommends the Tidy Cats Breeze Cat Litter System for single-cat use. They suggest using a single unit per cat, plus one extra. The cost of the unit and the special pellets may not be affordable for some multi-cat owners and it may be more hassle than its worth when it comes to scooping solid waste. One option that worked well for us, however, was using the system for liquid waste and having another litter box available for solid waste.
If youre looking for a litter box to cut down on maintenance, the Tidy Cats Breeze Cat Litter Box System has some upsides, but it may be difficult to transition some cats onto the pellets and it may not be cost-effective for multi-cat owners.
