Fluffy Or Fido: Who Causes Allergies

Dogs and Cats (Which is better?)

Three in ten Americans suffer from pet allergies, and people are twice as likely to be allergic to cats than dogs.

Although some think that hairless cat breeds, like the Sphynx cat, will protect them from allergic reactions, theyre mistaken because its not just cat fur that causes a reaction. The allergens can be found in the felines skin, saliva, and urine.

Theres research on dogs and cats, however, suggesting that children who are exposed to four-legged, furry friends from an early age are less likely to develop allergies in adulthood.

Dog Cats Or Dogs Have A Better Sense Of Taste

Since smell and taste go together like queso and chips, we look again to Canidae to discover that dogs have about 1,700 taste buds and our feline friends have around 470. While omnivorous dogs can detect five different flavors of thingssweet, sour, bitter, salty and savory/meatycats can only taste four. Being obligate carnivores, they lost the ability to taste sweet things as they evolved because it just wasnt necessary. While many cat lovers would point out just how smart of cats this was, this one goes to the dogs.

Ownership Statistics In The United States

  • Cat Ownership

According to data obtained in the US census, approximately 86.4 million kitties are kept as pets. Every third American household is home to at least one of these animals. On average, the number of felines living with cat-loving American families is two.

Figures provided by the American Veterinary Medical Association are somewhat different regarding the feline ownership statistics. According to these, the number of mousers living in American homes amounts to 74 million.

  • Canine Ownership

There are 78.2 milion pooches kept as pets in American homes. This number was recorded in the US census. Almost 40% of American households have a canine companion. The average number of canines per family is one.

Statistical data provided by the AVMA states the total number of 70 million pooches that are kept in the States. On the whole, more families, in general, opt for a dog as their pet. However, feline lovers seem to keep more than one such pet at a time.

Dogs Vs Cats: A Comparison Of The 5 Senses

There is sometimes an argument between cat lover and dog lover on which pet they would love to have as an addition to their family. Cat lovers will tell you they prefer cats because they are independent, not clingy like dogs and are affectionate when needed. While dog owners would say dogs can be more affectionate, can actually guard your home. All pets are equal, but for those who disagree, we have provided a comparison of the senses between the two animals. Below is a list of the 5 senses and comparison of their strength in dogs and cats.

The sense of smell

For a long time it was believed that dogs had a better sense of smell than most cats. This is because they have millions more scent receptor than their feline counterparts. Bloodhounds have been shown to have 300 million scent receptors, which is hundred million more than the best scent cats out there.

However, scientists have found that the noses of cats are more sensitive than dogs. It was found that out of the three types of scent receptors, the one responsible for the distinguishing between scents are more in cats than dogs. While humans possess only 2 V1R receptors, dogs have 9 and cats have 301. Yes, 30 V1R receptors, this means they have the most sensitive noses around even though they have may have less receptors. The ability to distinguish between very similar scents makes their sense of smell better than dogs.

A Dog Is A Mans Best Friend:

Have you watched the movie, John Wick? If you have, then you would probably understand how much a man can love a dog, he can even kill people for him.

A dog is said to be a mans best friend and its not just a saying, there are many other animals to whom a person can get really attached, but dogs? Man, they are simply the best.

A dog is loyal, a dog is active and helps keep you active as well. On the other hand, Cats are quite lazy in this regard, cause they can literally stay at home all the time and do nothing.

They only care when it suits them, like when they are feeling hungry or when they have to pee and their pot is dirty, and thats it. Otherwise, they dont even care about your existence.

Dog Versus Cat: Feeding Habits

Although both adult cats and dogs should be fed once or twice a day, canines eat considerably more.

A medium-size dog should eat around 1 cup of food, while felines eat just under 1 cup a day.

The feeding habits of kittens and puppies also differ. While kittens are fed twice a day, puppies eat three to four times in a day, usually half a cup per feeding.

With that said, cats take the medal with less money spent on food than dogs.

Pet Training: Cat Vs Dog

When it comes to cat vs. dog training, dogs are generally the easier of the two to train. A dog’s pack mentality makes him ready to follow a leader and makes him generally more obedient by nature. Typically, dog training is a process of teaching and reinforcing commands that help you communicate your desires to your dog. Dogs are so eager to please that they’re happy to meet those desires. However every dog is different, and some breeds have temperaments and learning aptitudes that take more readily to training than others.

Cats can be trained, but not as thoroughly as dogs. It requires a lot of patience and consistent practice to get past their willful nature. With cats, it’s best to focus training on establishing boundaries.

When it comes to house training, cats have the advantage over dogs. Cats use the litter box instinctively. It may only take showing them where the box is one time. If a cat is slow to catch on to using the litter box or appears to forget later on, this is often a sign of an underlying health issue, and you should consult your veterinarian.

Dogs, on the other hand, can be a lot tougher to potty train, especially puppies. Teaching them where it is and isn’t acceptable to go usually takes a lot of repetition and positive reinforcement.

They Are Really Good Mothers

Whats better? Dogs vs Cats!

Not only do mother cats nurse their kittens, but they also teach them to use the litter box, how to sharpen claws and whatnot. For dogs, this responsibility is upon the owners to teach puppies things. Not everybody might be able to afford the training assets, grooming tools and professional help needed for dogs.

Reasons Why Cats Are Better Pets Than Dogs

15 Reasons Why Cats Are Better Pets Than Dogs.

Cats and dogs are understood by the manifestation of their worldview. As an old joke goes, this is how a dog thinks about its owner: “This person’s great. She feeds me, she pets me, and she plays with me. She must be a god”. A cat, on the other hand, thinks: “This person’s great. She feeds me, she pets me, and she plays with me. I must be a god”.

Cats vs dogs have been a topic of debate for thousands of years. As much as the personality characters attributed to cat lovers and dog lovers is vague, an invisible line remains between these two types of people.

Cats are the type of pet that will snuggle you to show love rather than drool and lick your face. Cats have an instinctive way of living, they will love you when they want to love you and this is what makes them admirable. They make you work to have a relationship with them and that is the most attractive part about having cats as pets.

Are You A Dog Person Or Cat Person

Probably you have heard these two terms by now. These two terms are widely used nowadays and no doubt, many people will try to ask you whether you are Dog person or Cat person. For those who havent heard of these terms, Dog person often refers to people who prefer dogs and puppies. While Cat person refers to people who prefer cats and kittens.

So how to determine whether you are Dog person or Cat person? To some extent, there is no such clear factor which can tell a pet owner is a Dog person or not. Its mostly about personal preference and how you feel when you raise a cat or dog. Therefore, there is no need to think too hard about being a cat person or dog person. Instead, we should focus on the basic requirements of cat and dog since they have totally different characteristics.

The Cat Family Has Historically Been Much Better At Surviving Than The Dog Clan

Its the debate that has long divided animal lovers. Now scientists have confirmed that cats really are better than dogs at least from an evolutionary perspective.

A groundbreaking study of 2,000 ancient fossils reveals that felids the cat family have historically been much better at surviving than the canid dog clan, and often at the latters expense.

The research finds that cats have played a significant role in making 40 dog species extinct, outcompeting them for scarce food supplies because they are generally more effective hunters. But researchers found no evidence that dogs have wiped out a single cat species.

The dog family which includes the wolves from which todays domesticated dogs are descended originated in North America about 40 million years ago and reached a maximum diversity around 20 million years later, when there were more than 30 species on the continent. At that point, the cat family arrived from Asia.

The arrival of cats to North America had a deadly impact on the diversity of the dog family. We usually expect changes in climate to play the overwhelming role in the evolution of species. Instead, competition among different carnivore species proved to be even more important for the dogs, said the reports lead author, Dr Daniele Silvestro, of the University of Lausanne in Switzerland.

First Time Owners: Dogs Or Cats

Cats vs. Dogs

The choice between owning a dog or a cat can be an easy decision to make for some first time owners.

However, to many new potential owners, this decision could also prove to be a very difficult one. Taking care of a pet is a long term commitment, and prospective pet owners should be 100% ready to take responsibility throughout every day of their pets life.

Some people buy/adopt their pets on impulse, and end up regretting it. For example, I know a friend who gave away his dog after just 7 months because the dog was too hyperactive and loud for him. This was after he spent a lot of money building a dog house for it, as well as wasted money on food and healthcare costs.

I am aware that this is not the only case of this happening. It is honestly a shame that there are still many people out there who make the very same mistake and end up wasting money, time and their dogs trust in them as an owner.

So, if you are a prospective owner who cannot decide between buying a dog or cat, you have come to the right place. There are many differences between taking care of a dog and a cat, and I will be stating those differences down here for your reference.

Oh and before I start, ever consider ‘borrowing’ a pet to get a taste of taking care of one? If you want to try, you can for some details regarding how you can get involved in the action.

They Love Humans More Than Food

Over the years, cats have earned a bad rap for being cold and distant. “They only love you because you feed them,” dog owners often tell cat owners. There’s also the persistent rumor thatwere you to diea cat wouldn’t care at all, and would, in fact, eat your deceased remains to survive. But research indicates all of this thinking is just plain hooey. According to a 2017 study in Behavioural Processes, cats prefer human interaction to all other stimuli, including food, toys, and catnip. Can you say the same for dogs? We think not.

Physical Traits Of Each Pet Are Obvious To The Eye

Claws are evidence of the difference between dogs and cats. Your dog’s claws are duller than a cat’s, simply because they are always out, and the ground he walks on wears down the claws. A cat has very sharp, retractable claws that are used for protection and to latch on to things, such as something she were to climb.

Dogs and cats can be excellent hunters. However, the way they approach their prey is very different. Cats are climbers and use their claws to scale trees and then without effort, leap from high places. Dogs are earthbound creatures. While some are known for jumping, dogs are more likely to use their nose to find prey or speed to catch it.

Dogs Vs Cats Who Is Easier To Train

Even cat lovers will agree that dogs are much easier to train than felines.

Being pack animals, dogs are used to following a leader, which makes obeying commands from the alpha something theyre born with.

Also, dogs are so eager to please their owners that theyll take in all the training and reinforcement commands you teach them.

That being said, not all dogs are the same. Some breeds, like German Shepherds or Poodles, are more trainable than others.

One of the best-known facts about dogs is that they can have jobs.

Pups can learn how to do more than just sit or roll over. In addition to hunting, retrieving, herding, drug-sniffing, and even fishing, canines are also used as guide dogs for people with disabilities.

Some even work for police officers or are employed by the army.

Cats, on the other hand, are their own boss. Its not that cats cant be trained, its that they dont want to be.

There are some things a pet cat can learn, like how to respond to its name or even how to walk on a leash, but it takes a lot more work and even more patience than it does with dogs.

The approach to training is different too.

Dogs can be trained in groups and usually will learn new commands in a short time.

Cat training sessions should be shorter but more regular. Felines have longer memories than dogs, so if you try hard and long enough, you might teach your cat some tricks.

One thing both dogs and cats have in common is their love of treats as a sign of a job well done.

You Don’t Have To Walk Them

Cats Vs Dogs: Which Makes a Better Pet?

Whenever dogs need to relieve themselves, you have to take them outside. Yes, you can train them to need this only at certain hours of the day, but still, it’s a pain. Cats will just tend to a litter box on their own volition. A cat and its owner mostly stay out of each other’s bathroom businessand that’s truly one of the sweetest reasons why cats are better than dogs.
