Why Does My Cat Sleep With Me? Р5 Reasons You̢ll Love to Know

First of all, its warm on the top of your head, said Marilyn Krieger, certified cat behavior consultant and proprietor of the Redwood City, California, based operation, The Cat Coach. Though its warm on other places, the heat from your body usually escapes from you head, which can influence your cats decision on finding the warmest spot to sleep. A cat’s average body temperature is 102 degrees Farenheit and they need to maintain heat for proper basal metabolism, so seeking an external heat source allows the body to not have to work as hard to stay warm while sleeping.

This is just one of several theories Krieger has. Consistent among several of her suggestions is the notion of comfort a cat seeking hospice at the head of a bed may not only be seeking warmth, but evading the tics of a restless sleeper.

A lot of people toss and turn or have restless legs. Theres always some movement, but some people are more agitated than others, Krieger says. Being towards the head, theres less agitation than there would be lower down. The cat wouldnt have to move as much or be as accommodating.

In other words, your cats sleeping habits may say a little something about your own.

Theyve Found Somewhere Better

This is something that can dent a cat owners ego, but the reason might simply be because your cat has found somewhere they like better than your bed.

There may or may not have been a reason why they found somewhere else. But if they are sleeping in the same spot every night, its just more appealing to them for some reason.

Cats choose some of the craziest places to sleep too. I could list a number of strange places my cats have chosen over a comfy bed, such as

  • On the stairs Serious trip hazard here
  • On top of my TV

.. and the list goes on.

Why cats choose some places that are seemingly uncomfortable is one of the wonderful mysteries that surround our furry friends. You can place them on your comfy bed all you want, if they prefer somewhere else thats just how it is.

Cats dont expose their tummies to just anyone! If your cat is laying or rolling on the floor with her tummy up, she is vulnerable. She will only get into this position when she feels safe and trusts you. Cats show their tummy when they feel protected and loved.

She may also be trying to entice you to play. Cats know that no human can resist petting a fluffy kitty belly. Be careful if you try to pet her tummy, however, as it is likely to be a trap!

How Do Cats Choose Their Human

There is an old saying that cats choose us, we dont choose them. I think most cat owners will agree there is some truth to this!

Without making cats sound a superficial they often show more affection to the person who feeds and fuses them the most.

So if thats your partner and thats who they choose to sleep next to, can you blame them?

There is also a bond thats built between human and cat. Largely through how they are interacted with.

Every cat has their own personality, likes, dislikes, and will appreciate different types of social interaction.

Some cats like to be fussed a lot, some like to be left alone, some like to exchange head bunts, and so on.

The more you treat your cat how they want to be treated, the stronger the bond they will have with you.

The stronger the bond the more comfortable they will be around you, and the more likely they are to sleep next to you.

That’s Why Your Cat Sleeps with You

Though predisposed toward late night stirring, Krieger said that cats are nevertheless naturally flexible and can indeed be convinced to adopt more convenient sleeping habits, starting with some activity before bedtime.

in a way that imitates the huntdrag the toy away from cat and let the cat catch it, Krieger said. After a nice workout, immediately following that last catch, give the cat a nice bowl of cat food. The cat will then eat, groom, and go to sleep.

While any behavioral modification may take some time, repetition can always help encourage predictable behaviors, Krieger said. Your pet may be stubborn at first, but time and patience will indeed lead to a more mutually comfortable schedule and sleeping quarters.

Cat Sleep Is Different From Human Sleep Behavior

If we want to understand why our cats sleep on us, its helpful to take a look at how feline sleep patterns differ from our own.

Cats replenish their energy with several naps throughout the day as opposed to one long block of sleep like humans. But these catnaps usually remain in light sleep mode, seldom dipping into a deep sleep.

Why is this the case? It boils down to a cats role as a natural hunter.

Unlike humans, cats are always ready to attack prey or defend themselves against a larger predator. Even when they may appear to be out cold, their senses of hearing and smell are still sharp enough to spring them into action if necessary.

Since cats are always poised for action, it makes sense that theyd seek extra protection by curling up next to their owner. You give your cat an extra level of security during sleep, a time when theyre most vulnerable.

You Get Her Purr Motor Running

Cats purr when they are happy and feel safe and content. If your cat purrs every time you pet or play with her, it means she feels very comfortable around you and is happy you are there. The louder your cat purrs in your presence, the happier she is to be around you.

If your cat is purring loudly, she feels relaxed, safe, and happy. If your cat really loves you, you may notice her purrs becoming more intense when you pet her.

    Your Bed Isnt High Enough

Quite simply, cats love to be up high. Its an instinct that they have inherited from their wild ancestors.

High places are a safe haven for your cat, somewhere the dog and other troubles cant reach her.

Cats are most vulnerable when theyre asleep, so if Kitty doesnt think your bed is high enough, she may not feel safe sleeping there.

It can be more or less depending on the cat and you. But it is common for the kitty to miss you . So you will want to take advantage of the night and be near you In addition.

In litter cats usually live piled up and give each other warmth, comfort, and protection. The cat usually sees you as one of your littermates. So head bites, caresses, and sleeping together are part of being just another cat for him. And, of course, sleeping together or on top of you is a way to show mutual affection

    Cats Look For Security

In the wild, a cat will seek the safest place to rest in between hunts. In the home, that place is with you.

Cats are typically at the top of the food chain, but even still, they have to keep a watchful eye out for danger, explains Dr. Zay Satchu, the Chief Veterinary Officer at Bond Vet in NYC. Being around their humans, they can rest easier knowing there is some safety there.

Sleep is a vulnerable time, so your cat is indicating that he trusts you and feels content and secure with you. This behavior begins in kittenhood.

Cats are raised in litters, and when theyre very young until theyre about 12 weeks of age, sleeping usually means piling onto one another near mom, says Dr. Satchu. Its how they are raised during their peak socialization weeks and similar to other things they learn during this time, this translates into lifelong habits.

Your cat sleeps with you for comfort and security. After their mother, youre the next best thing.

Q: About the time my cat turned a year old, he stopped sleeping with me in favor of the screened porch or the kitchen floor. He made the switch about the time the weather turned especially warm here in Florida. Does he want to be more independent as he gets older, or is this change related to temperature? Also, though my cat head butts me and rubs against me all the time, he no longer enjoys sitting in my lap. Is there any way to make him more cuddly?

A: Dr. Weigner suggests the change in your cat’s preferred places to nap is more about temperature than about you.

“As the thermometer drops in winter, you might find your cat in bed with you again,” he notes.

“Some cats just aren’t lap cats,” says Olah. “The good news is, it sounds like your cat is expressing affection by those head butts.”
