When & How To Switch From Kitten Food To Adult Cat Food

Kitten Care : When Do Kittens Start Eating Solids?

Around your kittens first birthday , its time to switch to an adult cat food.

We recommend transitioning to adult food over a 7- to 10-day period to help avoid any digestive upset. Heres how:

  • Days 1-2: Serve 3/4 of the normal amount of kitten food and add 1/4 of the new adult cat food.
  • Days 3-4: Serve half kitten food and half adult cat food.
  • Days 5-7: Serve 1/4 kitten food and 3/4 adult cat food.
  • Days 8-10: Serve only the new adult cat food.

If your cat resists eating the new food, slow the transition and give her more time before you increase the amount of adult food. Consult with your veterinarian for additional tips on making the switch from kitten food to adult cat food.

When Do Kittens Start Eating Solid Food

Breastfeeding a kitten lasts about 9 weeks, and when their teeth begin to come in, after about four weeks, they can begin to eat food. We must feed them with food appropriate for their age. It is advisable to moisten it a little with water to make it easier to adapt to the process of chewing, or add a bit of wet food .

The food that cats must take from the end of lactation to one year of life must be composed of highly digestible proteins, antioxidants and omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. This feed must be of high quality and the amount to be given is estimated according to the weight and the guidance tables that come on the containers. However, depending on the characteristics of our kitten, the veterinarian can tell us if they should eat more or less.

The commercial names of food for growing kittens have names such as kitten, growth, etc. So look at this detail to select the best food for your little one.

If you prefer, you can make homemade food for this stage of life but, our vets recommend a complete feed, since it is very difficult to maintain a perfect balance between all the nutrients.

Purina One Kitten Dry Food How Much To Feed

For those of you who have read the entire kitten series, then you know the process of weaning kittens from the bottle to solid food.

Those of you that havent, then you may be asking yourself, what can kittens eat before dry food?

Well, if you think of it like a baby, the process is very similar.

Babies will start out with a bottle, and then move onto baby food, and from there start onto solid food.

Kittens are the same way.

They will start out with milk, whether it be from a bottle or a mother.

From there they will move onto a slurry or a combination of milk and wet food.

As they graduate from the slurry, they will move onto wet food until they are able to start trying dry food.

When Do Kittens Start Eating Food And Drinking Water

Their Mothers milk should be a kittens only source of nutrition from birth until 4 weeks of age. Its important that all kittens suckle within 2 hours of birth, as this is when they receive vital colostrum, the first milk produced by mom. Colostrum provides essential nutrients as well as antibodies, which protect the kitten against diseases until they are able to produce their own.

If a kitten is orphaned or cannot be with their mom, and no foster mom is available, then kitten formula is the next best thing. Its important to note that kittens should never be given human or puppy formula. This wont contain the right nutrition for them and can even be harmful. Only kitten formula is suitable.

Kittens can start eating food and drinking water from around 4 weeks of age. Some kittens may be ready after 3 weeks, but a kitten should never start weaning before 3 weeks of age.

Tell-tale signs that a kitten is ready to start weaning include trying to steal some of moms food, or biting and chewing on the teat in bottle-fed kittens. The weaning process takes around 2-4 weeks, with the majority of kittens only eating solid food at 8 weeks of age.

What About Calcium And Phosphorous

Kittens need calcium and phosphorous, but only in very specific amounts.

Growing kittens have to build bone and muscle very rapidly, so they require increased levels of calcium and phosphorous in their diets compared to adult cat foods. Its important to remember though that the ratio of both of these minerals is very sensitive and needs to be kept within a narrow margin of safety.

Commercial kitten foods will have formulated the diet to meet these nutritional requirements for growth. Consequently, supplements should never be added to kitten food. If calcium supplements are added to a commercially prepared kitten food there is a large risk of inadvertently causing bone, tooth, and other growth deformities.

Offer Your Kitten Small Completely Dry Meals A Few Times A Day

When your kitten has mastered eating a mix of dry and wet food together, start offering small meals of just dry food a couple of times a day.

When first offering these meals, also offer separate small meals of soaked food.

This gives your kitten time to get comfortable eating bowls of completely dry food while still giving them something familiar to eat during the change.

When your kitten is easily eating the small dry meals, make them a bit larger and eliminate any wet food you do not wish to feed long term.

If you start the process of introducing your kitten to completely wet food around four weeks and build up to eating completely dry food, your kitten should be able to eat dry food by around eight weeks old.

What Human Food Can Kittens Eat

Cats are obligate carnivores, so really your cat can eat plain, well-cooked meat of any kind. Raw or undercooked meat is not good for your cat, as bacteria and parasites can cause serious health concerns in your cat including diarrhea and vomiting.

Examples of safe human foods for kittens include:

  • Meat, plain and well-cooked
  • Fruit , fresh and plain including strawberries!
  • Starches, plain and cooked such as rice, potato, bread or noodles
  • Popcorn, cooked without salt or butter

Kittens can eat wet kitten food as early as 3 weeks of age. Since kittens are not usually fully weaned until 6 to 9 weeks of age, there is ideally a gradual change from formula or their mothers milk to a solid-food diet.

However, some kittens younger than 6 weeks oldas young as 3 weeks oldare already onto solid foods. If a kitten refuses to eat from a bottle, and is 3 weeks of age or older, set out a plate of canned food and see what happens! The kitten may very well chow down.

When Can Kittens Drink Water

You may have been wondering: When can kittens drink water? It is important to note that cats do not always drink water while at home. If your kitten is eating wet food, she wont need extra water, and she might even sleep. In any case, it is important to keep your cat properly hydrated. Cats dont drink water when they are asleep. However, if you notice that your cat does not drink water, you should bring her to the veterinarian.

The first few weeks of a kittens life are crucial. Although milk provides their bodies with fluids, they need water to stay healthy and prevent diseases. Water is especially important for kittens over four weeks old. It is best to provide filtered water to keep it odor-free and to avoid the potential for diarrhea. Cats can also safely drink sugary beverages and treats. However, sugar should only be provided in moderation, and filtered water is the best option for kittens.

Should Kittens Have Wet Or Dry Food

If your cat is still wetting the majority of the time, you may be wondering when can kittens start eating dry food. Dry food is different from wet food, and can be helpful for single servings. Dry food can stay in the bowl longer, so your kitten can go back to it when it feels hungry. If your kitten is resistant to dry food, you can gradually increase the amount of dry food your cat eats. Start by moistening dry food with milk replacer or water. As your kitten becomes accustomed to the taste, you can decrease the amount of water to the appropriate amount.

Once your kitten can easily eat small amounts of dry food, you can start introducing it to larger meals of dry food. Generally, you can introduce dry food to your kitten once it is eight weeks old. After that, you can start introducing your kitten to wet food again. As long as you follow the instructions carefully, your kitten will be able to transition to dry food in a short period of time.

Give Your Kitten Dry Food That Is Moistened

If your kitten is extremely young and has only been nursed by its mother, you will want to start by giving it dry food that has been soaked in kitten formula or water to make a very wet mash that is called gruel.

This is especially important if your kitten has only been nursed by its mother. This phase presents the concept of your kitten consuming something other than milk for the first time.

It also provides your cat with the opportunity to practise chewing and swallowing solid food while simultaneously developing a taste for dry food.

Tips On Choosing The Purrfect First Solid Food For Kittens

When Can A Kitten Eat On Her Own?

Most vets recommend a formula specially designed for kittens, and this is because this type of food usually has a slightly higher caloric value. Whether you choose wet or dry food for your kitten, you should ensure it contains the right amount of nutrients for your little feline friend.

Check out the table to learn about the essential nutrients for kittens and the necessary amount of each:

Nutrient

Calcium

0.8-1.6%

In addition to knowing about the essential nutrients, you should consult your vet about foods that could potentially lower your kittens urine pH level under 6.3 so you know what to avoid. A pH level thats too low can cause a ruckus in your furry friends urinary tract. One of the more dangerous problems a low urine pH can cause are crystals in your kittys bladder, which can be removed only surgically.

Do Kittens Need Wet And Dry Food

Both wet food and dry food are suitable for kittens. However, if youre feeding a wet food diet, youll need to feed your kittens small meals throughout the day to ensure their needs are met. Free-feeding your kittens dry food allows them to eat as often as they want during the day, making it more likely theyll receive adequate nutrition. Dry food also helps maintain the health of your kittens teeth and gums. Whether you feed your kittens a combination of wet food and dry food, or you decide to stick with dry food only, its important to feed your new fur babies a specially formulated diet just for kittens.

Kitten food is packed with essential nutrients and minerals to help your little ones grow up healthy and strong. Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning they require meat to survive. Kittens need even more protein than adult cats. They also require amino acids like lysine, methionine, and arginine during the early stages of development. While adult cats require fat, they dont require as much as young kittens. Fatty acids are essential to support your kittens during the numerous growth spurts theyll have in the first year of life.

How Often Should I Feed My Kitten

A kitten can grow 15 times faster than a human child, so it undergoes numerous physiological changes in its first year of life. Therefore, in order for a kitten to go through these changes, it will need the correct balance of nutrients in its food. As your kitten grows up and its body changes, so will its eating habits. In this article, James Wellbeloved will provide all the information youll need on how much to feed your kitten.

First A Transitional Time

A mother cat will start her litter on the weaning process when theyre about a month old. The kittens will begin to show an interest in cat food around that time. Slowly, they can be given tastes of kitten food that is soaked in water until its quite soft. Solid food can be gradually increased as the kittens nurse less often over the next few weeks. When a kitten is about eight weeks old, the weaning process will probably be complete, and hell be eating 100 percent kitten food.

How Can I Know Im Selecting A High

What

Mindy Bough, CVT, senior director of client services for the Midwest Office of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals emphasizes the importance of high-quality kitten food. I dont recommend generic or store brands, Bough says. Buy from a reputable company — one that veterinarians recommend more frequently, she says. Research has determined these kitten foods provide excellent health.

Continued

But how can you be certain a kitten food is of high quality? One way is by checking the label. It should at least contain the following: Meets the nutritional requirements of kittens established by the American Association of Feed Control Officials . AAFCO is a group of state and federal officials who regulate pet food. Even better, look for this: Complete and balanced nutrition for kittens based on AAFCO feeding trials. Complete and balanced nutrition means your kitten will require no mineral or vitamin supplementation. In fact, remember that too much of a good thing can be bad for your kitten, causing severe medical problems. Use supplements only if your veterinarian recommends them.

Also use caution with homemade diets. For example, all-meat homemade diets can be low in calcium, leading to a mineral imbalance that causes hyperparathyroidism, a disease more common in rapidly growing kittens. If you use a homemade diet, make sure its been formulated by a reputable nutritionist, Bough says.
