How To Pick The Right Kittens For Sale Near Me

Blue-eyed White Persian Kitten for sale

If you find a kitten for sale nearby, you should take advantage of the proximity and visit. If the litter of kittens is purebred, try to see one or both parents. At the very least, assess how well the breeder takes care of the animals on the property. Even a casual breeder should have clean facilities, and the kittens should look healthy, active, and unsoiled. Beware of kittens that are too thin, sneezing, or have any nasal discharge. Kittens commonly have soft stool or diarrhea. Ask the owners whether any issues you see have been addressed by a medical professional. Also, check the deworming and vaccination schedule. Some kittens may have their first set of boosters before you take one home, but many will not. Rescues and humane societies are also a good places to obtain kittens for sale because they usually take care of the first set of vaccinations and administer a deworming treatment. Either way, figure out where you need to begin or continue with preventative care.

  • Sunburn just like fair-skinned people burn quicker in the sun, so will a fair-color-coated pet. Its important to apply a good quality, cat-safe sunscreen. Cats are perpetual groomers so application would need to be frequent and it would need to be a product safe for cats to ingest. Speak to your veterinarian for recommended products.

    What Causes Blue Eyed Cats

Blue eyes are caused by a total lack of pigment in the iris. The eye is not actually blue, but clear. Because of the way the light reflects on a clear iris, the eyes look blue. Because blue eyes are at the absolute most extreme end of the genetic scale of eye colour, they are not found very often.

There are a number of coat patterns that can create blue eyes in cats:

    The White Spotting Gene

The mechanics of the white spotting gene are not yet fully understood. Basically, if a cat has the white spotting gene, then when the cat is developing in the womb the white spotting gene somehow inhibits the pigment from spreading over the cats body. The result is that a bicolour cat is created. Usually, but not always, the white is on the underside of the cat, so the cat will have a white tummy, white feet and a white facemask. Sometimes, however, the white can be on the top of the cat, although this is not very common! If the white covers the cats eyes, then there is a chance that the eyes will be blue. This is because if the white spotting gene inhibits the development of pigment in the skin around the eyes, it sometimes also inhibits the development of the colour of the iris. The result is that the cat has blue eyes.

The picture below shows one of our British Shorthair kittens, who has the white spotting gene, and the white is covering her eyes:

Adoption A Smarter Option Than To Buy A Kitten

No matter how “reputable” you think your local pet store is, they are almost surely getting their kittens from a “backyard” kitten breeder. The majority of purebred kittens are the product of irresponsible “backyard” kitten breeders. These are people who make some easy cash by breeding their purebred cats and they often also sell kittens through the newspaper classified ads. Remember that most of these backyard kitten breeders don’t know about breeding for favorable health and temperament qualities, and they don’t know how to raise a properly socialized litter. Many of these little kittens are weaned from their mothers way too soon. Sometimes, a backyard kitten breeder turns into small-time kitten mill to increase their supply so you can buy a kitten from a pet store and they can make a higher profit. How can you stop kitten mills? There is only one way. Take away their profits. Remember before you buy a kitten, keep in mind adoption is the most humane option!

    Blindness In White Cat Breeds

White Maine Coon kittens Blue Eyes

There is no truth that white cats with blue eyes are blind. Solid white cats with blue eyes are often deaf but their eyesight is completely normal.

Most kittens will be born with blue eyes, which change color as they mature. Full white kittens will either have blue or amber eyes or possibly one of each called Odd Eyes or Heterochromia.

Non-pedigreed white kittens may have green or yellow eyes. All of them can see. If there is any loss of sight in white cat breeds, it is likely to happen gradually in the same way that the other 95% of the cat population lose their eyesight, which could be from old age, injury or illness.

If you suspect your cat is losing her eyesight, youll notice a few changes in routine. Here are a few things you may observe:

  • Bumping into furniture, walls or tripping on stairs.
  • Difficulty finding food and water bowls or other familiar objects.
  • Crouches closer to the ground when walking to navigate floors with her nose or whiskers.
  • Becoming more vocal or noisier, a sign of distress, fear or nervousness.
  • Moves around less and is showing signs of clinginess.
  • Note any changes in your cats pupils, especially if they are different sizes or do not change in bright or low lighted areas.
  • Check your kittys menace reflex, or eye responsiveness, by dropping a cotton ball in front of her. She should at least blink, if not react.

Development Of Blue Eyes In White Cats

Generally, Almost all cats have blue eyes during the birth irrespective of their coat colour. This is because, there is no melanin pigment in cats eyes at young age. During birth, there are no melanocytes in the iris. The eyes are actually transparent. The blue colour in cat eyes during this age is due to the refraction of light. With time the blue colour changes to the normal cats eyes colour like Green. But, In true blue eyes white cats, the melanin production doesnt increase or change with age. So, Eyes remain blue. This melanin production in this cat is controlled by W gene which is also responsible for white fur and deafness.

Therefore You shouldnt buy a white cat with blue eyes during their young age. The eyes colour may change later. So It is advisable to buy this rare cats when they are young. Thats how you can ensure the blue eyes remain with cat for lifetime.
