If your cat is depressed, try drawing him out of his shell with gentle interactive play. Give him love blinks close your eyes slowly, leave them closed for a second, and then open them slowly, while thinking I love you.

These diseases both cause a vast increase in appetite: hyperthyroidism does so because your cats metabolism is burning too many calories, and diabetes because your cats body cant convert sugar to energy and the nutrition doesnt even get into his body in the first place. If your cat is always hungry, eating constantly and still losing weight, and especially if hes also drinking a lot of water, get him to the vet as soon as possible.

Often, we tentatively diagnose a meningioma based on the symptoms. Medical treatment can be of some help.
Cognitive Dysfunction
If most of the testing on your geriatric cat is normal up to this point, your cat may be suffering from cognitive dysfunction.
Because of an aging brain, your pet may have a syndrome not unlike Alzheimers in humans. There is no definitive test. I prescribe a number of medications and supplements to see if we can stop or decrease the yowling.

Wait until they are quiet to put down food, and dont give them treats when they meow. If this doesnt work, get an automatic feeder that opens at set times. Now kitty will meow at the feeder and not you.
Many cats meow when their people come home, or even when they just meet them in the house. They are lonely. If your pet spends too many hours a day alone, think about getting a pet sitter to enrich your pets life. Put a bird feeder outside a window they can watch. Leave foraging toys out with food inside. Get them a kitty condo and rotate different toys that you leave out for play.
