Why It’s Called A Black Widow
Nelsen chose the black widow for his research because “they’re mysterious and dangerous,” he says. Indeed, the black widow is one of the deadliest spiders in the world, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. About 2,600 black widow bites are reported to the U.S. National Poison Data System each year.
But its name comes not so much from the spider’s ability to kill humans, but from a cannibalistic behavior noticed in the species during copulation. An entomologist collected samples of male and female black widows and stored them in the same container. When he came back to check on the spiders, he discovered that the female widows had eaten the males.
This so-called “spider cannibalism” is not that rare in the spider world in general, Nelsen says. It usually involves the female eating the male before, during or after copulation. But it is rarely seen in black widows that inhabit North America. Black widow males, in nature, tend to escape quickly after copulating a luxury they weren’t afforded caged together with females in a laboratory setting. Also, research shows that male black widows can sense chemicals in the female’s web that indicate whether the she has recently eaten. They know to avoid hungry females, just in case.

What’s A Brown Recluse Spider
The brown recluse spider is one of the few venomous spiders found;in the United States . It is part of the arachnid family, which includes not just spiders, but ticks, mites, and scorpions, too. It has long, skinny legs and is about ½ to 1 inch long overall. Its entire body is brown, except for a dark mark in the shape of a violin on its head.
Brown recluse spiders are most commonly found in midwestern and southern states of the United States, and they usually hang out in dark places. When they are outside, they like to spend time in piles of rocks, wood, or leaves.
If they come inside, brown recluse spiders will go to dark closets, attics, or basements. They aren’t aggressive, and they bite only when disturbed.
How To Identify Black Widows
Most spiders do not pose a threat to dogs. The most common species that are dangerous to dogs are black widows, brown widows, and recluse spiders. There are other types of spiders, such as the wolf spider, that can produce a nasty wound, but arent fatal on their own.
Black widows are small, black and shiny spiders belonging to the genus Latrodectus. They range from half an inch to an inch and a half in length. Only female spiders have a blood red hourglass on their abdomen. Males lack this distinctive feature, and are;much smaller, brown in color, and much less commonly known for envenoming.
Black widows are reclusive spiders and mostly found in dark, cluttered areas, usually rife with other bugs. Places like sheds, wood piles, bushes, drainage pipes, basements, or crawl spaces are their favorite hiding spots. If you have ever seen a black widow in your general area, then you can bet this is a location that they inhabit.
Black widows are found in most continents including North America, South America, South Africa, Australia, Southern Europe, and Asia .

How Does It Look Like
To protect yourself, you should first know how to recognize this type of spider. Its body is about one and a half inch long, smaller by comparison than a dime. This is the size of the renowned females, as the males are about half this size and lighter in color, with red or pink spots on their back.
Females are more distinctive, sporting shiny black bodies and the trademark red hourglass-shaped marking that is located on the underside of their abdomen. The size difference is regarded as an explanation of why, after mating, females choose to eat their partners thus becomingwidows.

Black Widow Spider Facts
Black widows build their tangled cobwebs in dark, dry places wood piles, barns, greenhouses, basements, outhouses and latrines, hollow stumps, under lawn furniture and playground equipment, and in dense vegetation. They hide during the day in tiny crevasses or rodent holes, and creep out onto their webs during the night. When they do, they usually hang upside down waiting for a fly or grasshopper to get trapped in the sticky threads of their web.
When an insect gets caught, the widow quickly runs over and wraps it in silk. At mealtime, the spider digs its fangs into its prey, injecting the insect with digestive juices until it liquifies, and then the widow sucks up the resulting bug juice.
So how can you tell when you’re face to face with a black widow spider? Here are the identifying characteristics:
- Female black widow spiders are about 1.5 inches in length, with long legs. Males are about half that size.
- Female black widow spiders have a shiny black body, with the well-known hourglass shape on their abdomens, in red, red-orange or yellow.
- Males are lighter in color with red or pink spots. But color variations and markings vary depending on the species.
- Black widow spiders are generally not aggressive. In fact, they will only bite a person if they’re touched, trapped or sat upon.

Spiders are a lot like cats. They are little furry predators that live in our houses, and are mostly harmless. I thought you might enjoy this Arachtober-flavored Simon’s Cat video!

Cats often eat spiders, and for the most part, spiders don’t hurt cats. There are a lot of rumors that letting a cat eat a venomous spider will kill a cat; I can’t find any documentation of that. The process of consuming and eating a spider digests the proteins in the venom and renders them neutral. Which is why people that eat spiders are fine as well.
It is possible for a spider to bite a cat, although that is quite rare. Cats bat spiders around in the process of capture, just as shown in Simon’s video. Spiders occasionally object to being a toy, and try to bite. The skin of a cat is thicker than human skin, so it’s a rare spider that can get past the barrier of hair and skin to inject any toxin.
Anytime your cat has trouble breathing, it needs to get to a Veterinarian as soon as possible. Cats don’t pant like dogs, so breathing issues are a sign of serious trouble . This is also where, as a bird and cat lover, I mention the American Bird Conservancy “Cats Indoors!” Campaign. Indoor cats are safer, healthier, and kill less wildlife.

Black Widow Spiders Don’t Bite Often But Cats Are At High Risk
Researchers have proven that black widow spiders are picky about when they bite and when they deliver venom . The shy spiders will usually try running away or playing dead first when antagonized. They will also sometimes flick silk at an intruder or bite without releasing venom. They can even choose how much venom to release during a bite, which they seem to decide on based on the threat level.
All of this is good news for humans because it means they’re not too likely to be envenomed by a black widow spider and, if they are, it is usually not a fatal amount for an adult human.
However, cats are adept at finding the hiding spots of these elusive spiders and antagonizing them to the point of being bitten and injected with venom. They don’t know the danger these spiders hold for them, and they are predators that love to give chase. And a cat’s small size means that even a little venom can be deadly.
Brown Recluse And Hobo Spiders
There are a few species of spiders in the U.S. that can cause a large area of cellular damage with their bites. The brown recluse , or fiddleback spider, has a distinctive fiddle-shaped mark on its back. They are generally found in the south central U.S. but can be found as far north as Iowa, central Illinois and Indiana. The brown recluse is nocturnal and not aggressive. Other species of Loxosceles may produce wounds that are not as serious as the brown recluse’s bite. Hobo spiders are found in Washington, Oregon and Idaho , and can cause similar necrotic lesions like the brown recluse. They are large, aggressive brown spiders and build their webs at ground level or in basements.
Recluse spider venom contains compounds that destroy cell membranes. The venom attracts white blood cells, which also increases the cellular damage. If absorbed into the blood stream, the venom can break down red blood cells, causing anemia. The venom also affects coagulation and can cause bleeding.

How To Keep A Pet Widow Safely
Always remember: black widows are highly venomous spiders!
- Never handle a black widow. Make sure children and pets do not have access to the cage and ensure the enclosure cannot be knocked over or accidentally opened. Consider putting small warning label on or nearby the cage to alert visitors about a potentially dangerous animal being in the cage.
- Always know the location of the spider before opening the cage. Widows dont move much, but keep an eye on it at all times while the cage is open. Its also a good idea to always have a small catch container or catch cup sitting within your reach anytime you open the cage. You can grab it quickly and use it to catch the spider if it happens to escape the enclosure.
- Use long tools that allow you to safely work around a black widow. Use long tongs to remove or place objects from or into the cage. Use a long stick and gently touch the back legs of the spider to make it move if necessary. Use a small cup with a lid to scoop your spider into if you need to temporarily remove it from the cage.
