Why Adopt From Pet Haven

Minnesota cat, dog rescues desperately need foster, adoptive families | FOX 9 KMSP

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue. Our animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes and their foster families get to know the dogs and cats learning important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require. This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters!

How Much Does It Cost To Adopt

Adoption fees vary depending on the age and breed of the animal. Every pet placed through Pet Haven is spayed or neutered, is up-to-date on vaccinations, has a microchip ID, and has been examined by a veterinarian to make sure it is healthy at the time of adoption. You can view our adoption fees here.

Provide Loving Foster Families To Each Animal

All our animals are in loving foster homes, not in a shelter. Our foster program benefits both the animals in our care and their future families. Our foster families prepare animals for adoption by giving them a chance to live in a home where they can fully express their personality, work to overcome fears, recover from trauma, and receive needed training, giving them a better chance at a forever home.

Do You Ever Extend The 75

If an animal is available for at least 60 days or we feel they would be better suited outside of city limits we have extended our adoption radius from 75-miles to 200-miles outside Minneapolis, MN City Center, or possibly further, a distance at the fosters discretion since they will be coordinating the adoption. If you are outside of the 75-mile radius, the guidelines are as follows:

  • Any post-adoption vet care that Pet Haven would cover financially needs to be done with one of our partners in the metro area
  • Any post-adoption continuation of already enrolled behavioral / training that Pet Haven would cover financially needs to be done with one of our partners in the metro area
  • The applicant will need to come to the metro area for an in-person meet and greet with foster parent and dog or cat for dogs, if there is another dog in the applicants home, dog will need to accompany the owner to the meet and greet in the metro area
  • Home visit needs to be completed either by video chat or through another rescue in your area
  • Adopters will need to come to the metro area or a location comfortable for the foster to pick up their new family member if the adoption process is completed/approved.

We are committed to providing post-adoption services that include our health guarantee and behavior counseling. Therefore, we prefer an animals new home to be within reach of our volunteers and veterinary clinics. For this reason, Pet Haven prefers to limit its animal placements to locations within 75 miles of the Twin Cities but we will consider applications up to 200 miles of the Twin Cities. Adopters must be willing to drive to locations in the Twin Cities.

Minnesota cat, dog rescues desperately need foster, adoptive families

For anyone whos ever considered adopting or fostering a pet, theres no time like the present. Rescue organizations all over Minnesota desperately need help. They have more cats and dogs coming in than they can handle, and not enough families are willing to bring these animals into their homes.

    – For anyone whos ever considered adopting or fostering a pet, theres no time like the present. Rescue organizations all over Minnesota desperately need help. They have more cats and dogs coming in than they can handle, and not enough families are willing to bring these animals into their homes.

On Sunday, the rescue No Dog Left Behind, took in a transport of four dogs who traveled a long way to Maple Grove. They left Kentucky amid deadly flooding. However, it’s not just natural disasters leading to huge demand at the rescue.

“We keep taking in more dogs. We took in like 69 two weeks ago,” said volunteer Leeann Brown.

The demand started growing during the beginning of the pandemic and never let up.

“Previous to COVID, took in and placed about 400 dogs a year. The first couple years after COVID-19, it went up to 4,000 dogs a year, and it’s just been getting more and more and more,” Brown said.

The problem, however, isn’t just that there are more animals needing help. It’s also that far fewer families are willing to foster or adopt than what rescue organizations saw at the height of the pandemic.

    Why Should You Adopt

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.

Promote Efforts To Reduce Animal Overpopulation

We cant adopt our way out of pet overpopulation. We address homelessness at the root through our spay/neuter initiatives. We were the first organization in Minnesota to require spay/neuter prior to adoption and have continued to support efforts to reduce overpopulation through programs and grants. More than 5,000 animals have been altered through our grant program.
