Cat Care & Health : What to Give a Cat as a Laxative

Fiber supplements such as psyllium and Metamucil dont work for every cat and are not recommended for long term use. The increased bulk of the stool can lead to dehydration and can worsen constipation with time. Cats with chronic constipation usually have an underlying medical cause.

Possible medical causes include chronic kidney disease causing dehydration which leads to constipation, compression of the colon from other internal factors such as an enlarged bladder or prostate, enlarged lymph nodes, or trauma to the pelvic canal, a growth in the colon, or megacolon a condition in which the colon no longer contracts to push stool out.

In all of these cases, long term use of fiber additives will make the condition worse.

Why Is Miralax Bad

Some people take laxatives, including MiraLAX, with the hope of losing weight. However, MiraLAX and other laxatives are not effective for weight loss. In addition, they may cause harmful side effects if theyre used inappropriately. These can include diarrhea, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalances.

Veterinary Treatment Of Constipation In Cats

Your vet may recommend abdominal x-rays to see how much stool is in the colon, determine if the colon is dilated or if there is a physical obstruction causing constipation.

She may recommend blood tests to determine if there is an underlying cause of dehydration, such as kidney disease. She may recommend fluids to help rehydrate your cat and may possibly give a warm water enema. (Please note, I do not advise giving your cat an enema at home.

Certain enemas contain phosphate which can kill cats and if an enema is not done appropriately, tears in the colon can occur).

Cats eight pounds and over can receive 500mg per day. Cats under eight pounds can receive 250mg per day. Psyllium is usually available in 500mg and 1000mg capsules. I recommend to find the 500mg capsules. Open the capsules and mix the powder in the capsule with canned food. How Does Miralax Work In Cats

The active ingredient in Miralax is polyethylene glycol 3350, or PEG 3350. PEG 3350 is hydrophilic which means it attracts and bonds water molecules. One molecule of PEG can bind up to 100 molecules of water!

When cats take Miralax it binds to water in the gut and stops that water being absorbed out of the intestine. This makes their poop larger, and softer. The increase in volume stimulates the muscles in the bowel to contract and start moving their contents normally again. And being softer, it is more easily passed.

And although talking about them may not be one of the most pleasant things to have to talk about, it needs to be, because if your cat starts to have problems going to the bathroom, it can become a dangerous situations. The basics of a cats litterbox habits are that they should be urinating about twice a day, and defecating at least once a day. GoHolistic said:One of my senior cats, Boo, is on Miralax for chronic constipation. Vet said to use 1/4 tsp to start, but that was too much and gave him diarrhea. I reduced to 1/8 and that worked for awhile. Unfortunately, his body is getting accustomed to the Miralax and I had to up it back to 1/4. 1/4 is now no longer working. As my username suggests, I am not too keen on pumping chemicals into my cat’s body unless absolutely necessary. With impacted bowels, two enemas, and three vet visits, it was necessary. I will continue with the 1/4, but have opted to experiment with various types of supplemental fiber and petrolatum-free hairball remedies under the care of a veterinarian. He’s already on a grain-free diet with wet food.

mrsgreenjeens said:Yes, one of mine was on Miralax to keep him regular, and if his stools got a little too soft, I would cut back to 1/8 t, twice a day for just a couple of day, then would go back up to 1/4 before I would start to see him strain a little again. It’s a very fine line between being constipated and being “too loose”. But as soon as I dropped down the dose, seems like his stools would firm up.

Monitor Your Cat For Constipation

Contact your veterinarian if you notice very hard, dry feces, or if you notice that your cat is straining while defecating. Watch for any of the other signs of constipation, and contact your veterinarian if you notice diarrhea, especially, since this can quickly lead to dehydration.
