Where Have Your Paws Been Miss Kitty

DIY Tutorial How-To Clean Cat Poop Out of the Carpet – Episode 97

As a veterinarian, its my job to tell you what home practices are unhealthy for you and your pets. That would include allowing your cat on the counter as well as kissing your dog on the mouth. But look, Ive already admitted that I kiss my dogs, even though I graciously concede that I shouldnt. I will also admit that its not logical that I have no problem kissing dogs , but I dont want cats on my kitchen counter.

Cats keep themselves pretty clean much cleaner than dogs. But theyre still using those paws in the litterbox, and walking around on them too, which raises the potential that theyre picking up dangerous germs and bacteria and tracking them across your kitchen counters. You are putting yourself at risk by letting your cat walk the countertops. But you know what? You can minimize the possibility of disease pretty easily.

How? Wipe your counters well with an antibacterial agent before you prepare food, and I wouldnt worry too much about those cat tracks. Of course, even if your cat never sets foot on the counters, youre probably wiping them clean before you prepare food and following safe food-preparation rules anyway. Right?

If, like me, you cant stand the idea of a cat on the counter, then dont allow it. But if youre OK with your cats wandering across your kitchen island, then cover your bases and protect yourself from zoonotic diseases with a clean sponge, soap and hot water.

Like I always say, Lose the risk, keep the pet.

Dilute Cat Shampoo With Soapy Water

First, take some cat shampoo and put it in a jug of water .

Rather than giving your cat a full bath, which many cats find stressful, this mix is going to be used only on the dirty fur.

Having the mix already diluted will make it easy to use, gentle on your cats skin and will help to effectively rinse away any smaller poop particles.

What Does Poop Tell You About The Health Of Your Cat

Before we dive into the different types of cat poop, you should first be aware of just how important it is to stay on top of your cats litter box habits.

While we tend to think of our cats poop as something we should quickly scoop and avoid looking at, a quick glance is more helpful than you may think.

A cats poop appearance can tell you quite a bit about their digestive health. Their stool can be a direct reflection of how theyre feeling, and if they are battling any unseen medical complications.

Some of the many conditions that can affect the appearance of your cats poop include:

  • Food intolerance
  • And more

Teach Your Cat To Bury

If your cat has never buried her poop, it might be because she never learned from mamma kitty.1 Try sitting with her while she uses the litter box and then gently use her paws to cover the litter when she’s done. Give her treats when she does cover it. You can also use clicker training to “capture” the right movements and slowly encourage her over time.2

Why Does Your Cat Poop On The Carpet

How To Get A Constipated Cat To Poop

If your cat starts pooping on your carpet despite being potty trained, you will get concerned. There are a few reasons why your cat might not be following its bathroom habits. Let’s go through them.

Medical issues are one of the most common reasons for this. Constipation can cause it to poop in a rush whenever it feels like it can finally relieve itself. Behavioral factors can be the culprit too. Your cat might be stressed about an environmental change.

If there is any problem with your furry friend’s litter box, you have to fix it. Otherwise, it will refuse to use it.

We have a detailed post that describes various reasons for cats peeing at inappropriate spots. Those are mutual for their change in pooping habits. Take a look at the post below.

Did your adorable cat start peeing on your carpet? That’s concerning. I have made a list of possible reasons and some tips to prevent the cat from doing so.

What Other Warning Signs Might There Be

  • Your cat could be using the litter box more frequently than normal.
  • It is possible that she appears to be having issues with urinating her bowels, for instance struggling to go to the bathroom.
  • She might yowl or whimper when she is trying to empty her bowels.
  • Feces can be smaller, drier , and tougher than the norm.
  • She might begin to pee outside of your litter box.

Be Careful When Washing The Cats Fur

Position your cat in a tub or a wash basin where you can start cleaning its fur. Some experts say that things like this might be easier when your cat is a bit sleepy, but evidence for how well this works is anecdotal at best.

Youre just going to have to try to be calm and keep your cat calm during this process. Pour the warm water and shampoo mixture over the cats backside so that you can start washing its fur.

You should be able to use a rag to wipe away the fecal matter that is stuck to your cats fur. Sometimes this will be hard if the hair is matted or caked with cat poop, but you can still remove as much of it as you can.

If necessary, you can grab a fine-tooth comb to help get rid of more fecal matter. You can gently brush the fur near the cats backside to try to remove as much of the poop as you can.

You want to do this without hurting the cat, but sometimes that can be hard if the cats hair is knotted up. It might cause the cat to jump or get upset, but just try to speak to the cat using a soothing voice so that this process can go as easily as it can.

Be sure to massage the shampoo into the fur so that you can loosen the poop as much as possible. If you do it right, then you should be able to completely wash the fur so that the cat will be clean.

Washing away the soap residue will be easier if you have a spray bottle nearby. Simply fill the spray bottle with warm water and spray the cats backside when its necessary.

Causes Of Constipation In Cats

How to Dispose of Kitty Cat Poop Without Using a Plastic Bag

While constipation can be treated by itself, it is sometimes caused by an underlying issue. This underlying problem may be something minor, but it can also be a severe health condition. Until the cause is treated, constipation will often reoccur. It is vital to figure out constipations actual cause, as you dont want to ignore a serious, underlying illness unknowingly.

Many diseases that cause dehydration can further lead to constipation. Without enough water in their system, cats can have difficulty having a bowel movement. There are tons of reasons your cat may be dehydrated. New medication and lifestyle changes can cause dehydration, as can more severe problems.

Cats eating dry cat food are more likely to be dehydrated and maybe pre-dispositioned to constipation for this reason.

Constipation can also happen whenever the bowels arent moving correctly for whatever reason. For example, stress, inflammatory bowel disease, allergies, nerve problems, and even some cancers can affect the bowels movement.

Some chronic diseases can also result in constipation. For instance, kidney diseases, diabetes, and hyperthyroidism will all cause constipation. Some physical injuries can cause constipation as well, including any damage to the anal sacs.

It is tough to diagnose constipation in cats at home. You will need a vets help. We highly recommend giving your vet a call if your cat is constipated. In the meantime, there are some things you can do to provide relief.

Choosing The Wrong Litter Box

Cats can be fussy, so finding the right litter box may take some time. Follow these steps to choose the right litter box for your cat:

  • Consider the size of your cat. A litter box should allow your cat to turn around easily. If the box is too small, your cat may refuse to use it or urinate over the edge onto the floor.

  • Choose the right height. Most cats can easily get into and out of a litter box with semi-high sides. However, an older cat or a cat with mobility problems may need one with lower sides.

  • Get at least one box for each cat. Cats are very private animals and wont typically share a litter box with other cats in the home. Provide one box for each cat, plus a spare.

  • Leave upgrades for later. Add-ons like covers and liners and fancy self-cleaning gadgets can seem like useful items, but you might want to wait and add these at a later date once your cat is happily using the litter box.

What Is Constipation In Cats

Most cats will poop approximately every 24 to 36 hours. If your cat is pooping less frequently, strains when she attempts to poop or doesnt leave any deposits in the litter box, constipation is likely the issue. Its a common problem in cats thats usually mild enough to be remedied with at-home treatments.

If it happens infrequently, theres no need to worry, but you should contact your vet if it becomes a common problem or if its been more than 48 to 72 hours since shes had a bowel movement. Constipation can sometimes be a sign of serious health issues, not to mention be uncomfortable .

How Do You Treat My Cats Constipation

1. Changing your cats food

Changing to a high fiber diet in the form of canned food is important for the long-term management of constipation in cats. Ideally, this new food should be high in soluble fiber, which is important for increasing water into the stool, and is highly digestible/fermentable. With cat constipation, I prefer canned food however, not all cats will eat that! If your cat only eats dry food, please know that there are high fiber, prescription dry cat foods too. Remember, when it comes to cats, diet changes should occur very slowly to allow them plenty of time to acclimate. Psyllium products can also be sprinkled onto food, but keep in mind that some cats wont eat readily.

2. Fluid therapy

Whether given under the skin or in the vein directly , this is an important way of helping hydrate your cat and restore some moisture into the feces. This is also why its so important that your cats water intake is enhanced by providing clean, fresh water at all times!

3. Stool softeners

There are several types of stool softeners used in cats. These can be over-the-counter or prescription . When in doubt, always check with a veterinarian first prior to using these as they can cause secondary side effects .

4. Enemas

5. Prokinetics

These are drugs that help the gastrointestinal tract contract more. These are prescription medications from your veterinarian such as cisapride , metoclopramide, and ranitidine. Cisapride is thought to be the most effective.

7. Surgery

Try Fiber Or Probiotics

How To Get Your Cat To Cover Their Poop

Probiotics are good bacteria that help support healthy intestines. Healthy intestines will move stool along normally and keep stools soft, preventing constipation.

Fiber feeds the good bacteria and helps promote normal movement in the intestines. It can also help keep more water in the intestines, which helps treat and prevent constipation.

There are different types of fiber, so what works best will vary between cats. Some common sources are Psyllium husks , and wheat bran. Canned pumpkin is often used, but it actually contains very little fiber and lots of sugar, so it isnt the best choice for most cats.

However, the gastrointestinal tract of cats is a little different from people, so high-fiber diets do not always help constipation, explains Dr. Scott Gellman. In fact, sometimes a low-fiber diet works better. A lot of it depends on the cause of the problem. The important thing to understand is there is usually an underlying cause of constipation, and the cat should be brought to a veterinarian to help figure it out.

Ask Your Vet About Over

The following over-the-counter products may treat symptoms of constipation, but make sure to consult your veterinarian before giving any new supplements or medications to your cat.

There are several types of laxatives that work in different ways. Most over-the-counter options work by causing the body to pull more water into the intestines, which helps soften the stool so its easier to pass.

Because they pull water into the intestines, laxatives can make other symptoms worse for cats with underlying chronic diseases, causing dehydration. You should ask your vet if theyre a good option for your cat.

Miralax is commonly used in cats with constipation, and Colace is also an option. Other laxatives that are designed for people can cause issues for cats.

Oil- or grease-based laxatives like Laxatone should only be used if a vet recommends them and should not be used long-term, as they can affect a cats ability to absorb nutrients from their food.

Never Flush Your Cats Poop

You are probably thinking about flushing your cats poo and litter down the toilet. It is probably the most convenient option. However, convenience does not necessarily mean that it is the right thing to do.

One of the risks involved in flushing cat poop in a toilet is that you risk spreading Toxoplasma around your home. Although feral and outdoor cats are at a greater risk of contracting this parasite, it is still possible that your indoor cat may be infected.

Apart from causing problems with pregnant people and persons with weak immune systems, the parasite can infect wildlife, especially marine animals like whales and dolphins.

When you flush down your cats poop, the Toxoplasma eggs go to your areas sewage treatment facility. Unfortunately, sewage treatment cannot kill all the parasites eggs. Worse, sewage water can wind its way to bodies of water, infecting animals.

How To Clean Cat Poop In Carpet

There are two easy ways to get rid of cat poop from the carpet. Both of the methods are effective, and you can choose any one of them. One is the right fit for you if you are a DIY kind of person. You will probably opt for the other one if you prefer off-the-shelf products.

Put on gloves before starting the cleaning process. Avoid coming in contact with the feces as cat poop has bacteria and parasites.

Before you proceed with any of the following methods, you have to carry out two simple steps.

Step 1. Pick up the solids:

Grab a towel and pick up the feces on the carpet before you start cleaning the affected area. Then, you can dispose of the cat poop safely and hygienically.

Step 2. Absorb the excess moisture:

Take a fresh towel to absorb any liquid that may be present in the carpet’s stained area. Press the towel gently on the carpet and let it absorb the moisture. Keep doing that with dry towels until the towels start coming out dry.

Let’s take a look at each of the procedures in detail.

How Does My Cat Get Diagnosed

Your veterinarian will diagnose your cat with constipation based on several things, including a thorough history , physical examination findings , and a medical work up. A medical work up is important to find the possible cause of constipation in your cat and will consist of the following:

    • A minimum of blood work to check the kidney and liver function, salt balance, protein level, and blood sugar
    • A complete blood count to look at the white and red blood cell count
    • A thyroid value
    • A urine test is important to look at how well the kidneys are working
    • X-rays will help look at the size of the pelvis opening, and look for any obvious cancer or physical causes for not being able to defecate
    • An abdominal ultrasound in reoccurring cases of constipation to help rule out cancer.

Once this veterinary diagnostic work up is done, the most important part of making your cat comfortable and treating their constipation is getting that backed up feces out of there! Please know that some cats may need long-term medication or dietary changes to prevent chronic constipation from happening again. This is important because we want to prevent megacolon, which is when the colon becomes chronically dilated and is difficult to treat long-term.
