How Can Cats Know If You Love Them

Can cats interpret our expressions of love the same way other humans do?

Itâs a hard question to answer, but scientists have begun tackling this conundrum.

âSo you can at least say that cats show signs of attachment directed towards their owner.â

For example, a 2016 study published in the journal Animal Cognition attempted to understand how well cats can distinguish human emotions. The cats were presented with different facial expressions â including happiness and anger â as well as positive and negative conversations between their owner and an unfamiliar researcher.

âDomestic cats were only modestly sensitive to emotion, particularly when displayed by their owner, suggesting that a history of human interaction alone may not be sufficient to shape such abilities in domestic cats,â the research team concludes.

If you think your cat can sense your every emotional whim, this news might be disheartening. But Tynes offers some hope.

âThere is some research on cat attachment to humans, and it does demonstrate that cats show many of the signs above in association with their owners but not with a stranger,â Tynes says.

âSo you can at least say that cats show signs of attachment directed towards their owner and form attachment bonds with their owner.â

Can Cats Give Unconditional Love

Even when we think our cats love us, is that affection still conditional â dependent on us feeding them, providing for their basic needs, and generally caring for them?

âRegarding conditional or unconditional love, I will say that there is minimal evidence one way or the other to support this,â Tynes says.

But if one aspect of unconditional love entails putting up with harsh treatment or a loved oneâs bad habits, then cats are probably less likely to be capable of such love, explains Tynes. She compares cats to dogs, who may be more likely to display affection toward an owner, even after facing punishment.

âOn the other hand, I believe cats are very sensitive to punishment from their owners, and punishment or harsh treatment seems to be more likely to damage the bond between the human and cat,â Tynes says.

Pankratz views the question differently, however, suggesting a catâs ability to freely express love is dependent on trust between owner and pet.

âIf that trust is broken, there may not necessarily be no more love, but the ability to express that behavior may different may differ or vary with those sorts of experiences or influences,â Pankratz says.

Cats do a lot of talking with their eyes and one very special way they say I love you is through the slow blink. In this they are saying, Hey friend, I love you, and I feel comfortable enough around you to let my guard down. If your cat approaches you with her tail held high, twitching the end ever so slightly, she is happy to see you. Cats are happiest when they are near their favorite people.

How To Recognize And Treat Mites On Your Cat

Recognizing mites and knowing how to treat them is important to the health of your cat.

Reading time: 5 minutes

Recognizing mites and knowing how to treat them is important to the well being of your pet cat. The mites themselves are a big problem; however, the real danger is your cat scratching itself in an attempt to relieve the itching. This repeated scratching can result in a number of deep wounds, as the itching becomes much more relentless.

Along with the worry for your pet’s health, there are also the serious health ramifications for individuals living alongside suffering animals. Mites can only thrive when given a host to feed off, but this also means that they can travel from one host to another. This means that you and other people or animals in your household are prone to catching the mites and suffering from the same problems as your cat.

Your Cat Will Start To Nest

As your cat prepares to give birth, shell want to make sure that she has the perfect safe place where she can look after her kittens. A sure sign that labor is imminent is the fact that your cat starts to make herself a cozy nest. You can help by providing a box or high-sided bed full of soft blankets for your cat to choose from.

Bear in mind that her opinion of the best place to start building her nest may differ from yours! Shell likely choose the place that she feels safest, and that may be in a corner of your bedroom, behind the couch, or another tucked-away spot. As long as her nest isnt somewhere cold or completely inappropriate , try to leave it where the mama cat has chosen. Kittens cant regulate their own body temperature, so the nest must be somewhere warm and free of drafts. Its also best that its off-access to other pets and kids, at least for the first week.

Turns out, scent is super-important to cats. In fact, they communicate with pheromones. When your cat boops you with her forehead, shes not just being cute; shes depositing pheromones from scent glands on her head. These head butts, also called bunting, are a way of marking you as safe.

Cheek rubs are another form of bunting. Cats have additional scent glands on the sides of their mouth, and they deposit pheromones by rubbing their cheeks against things. You may have heard this referred to as a cat marking their territory, but according to a vet interviewed for Vetstreet, its more nuanced than that.

When your cat marks you, theyre showing how much they trust you. And they may also be picking up your scent because it makes them feel safe. Scent-sharing is a major sign of cat love!

Cats are not like humans – a tight hug doesnt mean the same to a cat! In fact, if a cat is picked up and hugged, it frequently will make them feel stressed and they will fight and struggle to get free as they do not like to be restricted and not in control. Instead, wait until your cat comes to you, and show them you love them back by stroking them around their ears and cheeks. If they are enjoying the interaction, are relaxed, and like to be picked up, then you could slowly and gently lift them up, continuing to stroke them around the ears and cheeks. Try and follow your kittys lead and learn about how they like to interact with you so that they continue to feel relaxed, in control, and know that theyre interacting with you on their own terms!

Greet them with a slow blink, set aside a specific time during the day to play and interact with them, using their favourite toys , and make sure you spend downtime with them curled up on the sofa or listening to music.

Of course, the most important way to build your bond with your cat is to ensure you provide everything their heart desires on a daily basis!
