Its a busy time for us! Humane Society COO Jessica Des Lauriers said in a written statement. Right now, we have more than 1,600 animals in our care, which includes more than 450 pets available for adoption. We truly hope this fee-waived promotion can be an incentive for folks looking to open their hearts and homes for a new family member.

The organization says there are 100,000 more pets in U.S. shelters right now than there were at this time last year due to staffing shortages, limited shelter hours, fewer volunteers and fewer adoption events. In San Diego, large- and medium-sized dogs, rabbits, Guinea pigs and hamsters are particularly common.

Each pet available for adoption has been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and medically and behaviorally assessed, the organization said. Adoptions come with a free veterinary exam certificate and a dog license if residing in one of the 14 cities contracted by San Diego Humane Society.

The Humane Society said it was able to waive fees through a partnership with Bounty Paper Towels and the Best Friends Animal Society, a national network made up of thousands of shelters.

New York Bans Pet Stores From Selling Cats Dogs And Rabbits

ALBANY, N.Y. New York on Thursday became the latest state to ban the sale of cats, dogs and rabbits in pet stores in an attempt to target commercial breeding operations decried by critics as “puppy mills.”

The new law, which was signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul and takes effect in 2024, lets pet shops work instead with shelters to offer rescued or abandoned animals up for adoption. It will also ban breeders from selling more than nine animals a year.

“This is a very big deal. New York tends to be a big purchaser and profiteer of these mills, and we are trying to cut off the demand at a retail level,” said Sen. Michael Gianaris, a Democrat.

He added that the puppy mill industry treats animals “like commodities” and said “there is no pet store not affected.”

Pet shops have argued that the law will do nothing to shut down out-of-state breeders or increase their standards of care and said it would result in the closures of the dozens of pet stores remaining in New York.

California enacted a similar law in 2017, becoming the first state to ban such sales. While that law requires pet stores to work with animal shelters or rescue operations, like New York is doing now, it does not regulate sales by private breeders.

In New York, pet advocacy groups have long called for a full shutdown of facilities that raise and sell animals for profit, saying animals are raised in inhumane conditions before they are shipped off to stores.

Observe Before Rescuing Found Kittens

Its kitten season and the San Diego County Department of Animal Services is reminding people to hold off on immediately scooping up kitten litters they may encounter in their communities. Mother cats typically leave litters alone for some stretch of time while she hunts for food and then returns to them.

But in some instances, they are gone because a well-meaning person wanted to rescue them.

From this time through October every year, underage kittens pour through the shelter doors.

If the kittens arent in immediate danger from such things as traffic or predators, and they arent visibly sick or injured, its best to observe them for a while to see if a mother cat will return often she is just away from her kittens temporarily. Be sure to watch from a safe distance so the mother cat feels safe enough to return to her babies.

If you dont see a mother cat return after six hours and feel the kittens need care, you can make an appointment to bring them to an animal shelter or try to care for them yourself. Many local pet stores carry kitten milk replacer and the proper bottles . Bottle-feeding kittens can be rewarding, but very time intensive, since round-the-clock feedings are needed until the kittens are old enough to eat solid food.

If youd like to learn more about becoming a lifesaving foster caregiver, please contact the Department of Animal Services at for more information or to sign up.

Why Should You Adopt

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and youll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
