Animal Shelter In New York City Hopes To Inspire No-Kill Movement | TODAY

Save a life by adopting instead of shopping

Rescue Dogs Rock is a non-profit animal rescue founded in 2015. We exist solely on donations and rely primarily on fundraising to help animals in need.

Since its inception, Rescue Dogs Rock NYC has saved over 5,500 dogs.

Our goal is to save abused & at risk dogs from kill shelters & provide vetting & loving homes.

We want to introduce these animals to the public and educate people that unwanted companion animals are not damaged goods or unworthy, but really can be great family pets. Because the abuse, neglect, cruelty and medical cases cost shelters the most money and are the most urgent, they are often the first animals euthanized.

It is our goal to focus on the rescue of these urgent animals and provide them immediately the routine, emergency or specialized medical care they need and deserve. We will go beyond just vet care and get these animals rehabilitated as needed using trainers and behaviorists to help overcome issues related to past trauma.

Our outreach and education efforts will take place on our website, , , as well as in person in the community via community events, school assemblies and any place people may lawfully gather to exchange information and learn.

Our message is one teaching general animal care and welfare, population control through spay and neuter and disease control in the animal population via proper vaccinations.

The NHS has become successful thanks to a 10-step procedure consisting of objectives such as aligning actions as well as establishing priorities for saving lives, and more simple targets which consist of staying flexible.

They were able to do this by forming a help desk that works to encourage individuals and provide them with guidelines linked to keeping their pets at home, instead of sending them to shelters.

They were able to get to a 92% save rate in the year 2012.

Arizona Animal Welfare League

Located in Greater Orlando, the Greyhound Pets of America is a smaller animal shelter, focused on Greyhounds. It was founded in 1996 as a chapter of the National Greyhound Pets of America organization and it has been a staple of the organization ever since.

Representing them in this list of the best animal shelters, GPA/GO is a 100% volunteer organization that never returns a Greyhound and offers the best possible care for their animals.

Founded in December 2010, the New York Bully Crew specializes in Pitbull rescue, but also provides care and help for all other dogs and animals in need they can find. The NY Bully Crew does a great deal of work in rehabilitating pitbulls and finding them loving and responsible owners, however, they also act to raise awareness of the horrible acts of violence done against Pitbulls, due to the awful clichés that still exist about them.

Founded in 1984 a time when the shelters in the U.S. were still killing millions of cats and dogs across the country Best Friends Animal Society made all the difference. Today, the Best Friends Animal Society is a leading national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters.

Ever since it was founded in the year 2000 by Beth Silberg and Toni Bodon, Stray From the Heart has been one of best animal shelters in New York and the country as a whole.

Humane Society Of New York

For over 100 years, the Humane Society of New York non profit organization) has been a presence in New York City, caring for animals in need when illness, injury or homelessness strikes.

It was founded in 1904 to protect the city’s horses against abuse. Today the hospital and Vladimir Horowitz and Wanda Toscanini Horowitz Adoption Center help more than 38,000 dogs and cats annually, with special attention to quality of life at the shelter. That means every day, every dog gets exercise time in the rooftop run, and the chance to walk outdoors with staff and volunteers, and cats enjoy daily play sessions outside their kennels. This very personal care is fully as important to a pet’s well being as the inoculations, spay/neuter and other veterinary care provided during its stay in the adoption center. “This doesn’t feel like a shelter” remark many visitors to the Society. “It feels like a home.”

Multnomah has formed a connection to the ASAP and has turned out to be a model for minimizing the euthanasia rate. ASAP happens to be an alliance of the biggest animal welfare establishments which are serving the Portland metropolitan region.

According to the website of Multnomah their save for canines is at present up to more than 90% and they have included several innovative programs in recent times for increasing the save rate for the cats. Transferring of the animals to community partners happens to be their most effective tool in minimizing euthanasia rates.

Depending on rescue groups, private shelters, along with private foster homes have been the essential assets of Multnomah.

No Kill Animal Shelter Resources

We at the Cat Hospital believe that all cats deserve a caring home. Often we are asked if we could house unwanted cats. We understand that life can throw curve balls, and that sometimes these curve balls hamper your ability to take care of your pet. Unfortunately, the Cat Hospital is not a shelter and does not have the resources to provide shelter and search for homes for unwanted cats. We will however do everything in our power to help you find a home for your unwanted pet, short of taking ownership. The Cat Hospitals Facebook Page is a great resource that reaches a large animal loving audience you are welcome to post adoption details/flyers. You are also welcome to post adoption flyers in our waiting room bulletin board. Below is a list of No Kill Animal Shelters that may be able to assist you.

What is The Toby Project?

The Toby Project is a nonprofit organization working to end the killing of thousands of adoptable dogs and cats each year in New York City’s animal shelters through a targeted, free and low-cost spay/neuter initiative.

We are the only organization in NYC whose sole mission is to reduce growth of shelter populations by preventing the births of unwanted dogs and cats. We will make NYC a true “no-kill” community by directing spay and neuter at the very animals who would otherwise perpetuate a vicious cycle of unwanted birth and unnecessary death.

Michigan is now officially a no-kill state for shelter animals. To be considered a no-kill state, 90 percent of animals are either returned to owners, transferred to other shelters and rescue organizations, or adopted. Tips On Finding Animals New Homes

If you have a cat you cant keep, DONT throw them onto the streetthey wont survive. Take the time to find a new home. It takes some patience, but it works, and its worth it! The same is true if you find a friendly cat on the street and would like to help.

Unfortunately, most rescue organizations in the city are overextended and cant take in new cats. Also, many cat shelters will kill cats they cant place. So the best thing to do is first try to find them a home yourself, using available resources. Excellent advice for anyone trying to get an animal adopted can be found at the Best Friends for Animal Society.

The High Purpose Of Shelters

Animal shelters for dogs and cats are great not just for us and for our outdoor habitat, but for the animals themselves. As tough as it is to see a dog locked up in a small cage in a shelter, the alternative of a dangerous life on the street is never better for a homeless dog. The phrase a dogs life is not without meaning after all. Stray dogs also pose risk to the public simply because they’re trying to survive.

Animal shelters already know they cannot solve the problem of pet homelessness, but even then they still do whatever they can to treat the symptoms of this global issue. They provide accommodation, food and water, and veterinary care and sterilization care for stray dogs and cats. They train, re-train and rehabilitate unwanted and problematic pets, and organize visits from future pet-owners-to-be for the pets they keep in the shelter.

Sadly, even among dog lovers, these rescue organizations and cat dog shelters rarely get enough praise for the work that they do. However, all good animal shelters definitely need more recognition and appreciation from both pet owners and non-pet owners alike. Your praise and appreciation through words and presents lets shelters and their volunteers know that their work matters, and cash donations can improve the quality of life of their hosted animals.
