At three weeks, they still require some form of heat source as they cannot create heat on their own. I know some people will place a heating pad under a blanket to help keep the kittens warms, and some will use heat lamps.
I selfishly like the heating pads because when the little kitties arent using it, I love to steal it for myself.
The biggest thing with this to call out is that they need a spot to keep warm, but also areas that arent directly in the line of heat in case they get too hot. You want the kittens to be comfortable so providing them both heat, and indirect heat is always recommended at this age..
At this age, sometimes a blanket or warm article of clothing can suffice for heat sources but you want to watch the kitten and make sure they dont get too cold. Multiple kittens can sometimes use each other to keep warm as well.
So watch your kitten, if they seem chilly, add a heat source. If they seem uninterested in the heat source, may start to work towards taking it away.

When they are not touring the environment around them, they will either be sleeping or eating. 3-week old kitten development and growth place a lot of caloric burden on them. You need to feed your kitten very well in order for it to keep up with the demands of its developmental stage.

Advice On How To Bottle Feed
This will be clunky at first. I know some people will wrap the kittens in a towel to prevent them from trying to rip the bottle from you. Some will have troubles finding the bottle. Be patient. This first few times feeding them will be the hardest. Once you get into a swing of things in will get better.
You also want to make sure the bottle is tilted upside and upside enough that they can get the liquid inside. When we were feeding Binx, this was one thing I struggled with the most.
I would get the bottle into her mouth but she would get so mad at me. I found out that was because she wasnt actually even getting the formula until I tipped it nearly upside down.
My biggest piece of advice when it comes to bottle feeding is to just be patient. Understand that they first 5-10 times doing it will be frustrating. You are not alone on this.
When I was first learning this, I remember sitting in my bedroom just crying. It was so out of my comfort zone. And I LOVE animals.
Cleaning And Flea Control
After each feeding session, you should also give them a full-body, once-over wipe with a barely damp washcloth, using short strokes like a mom-cat would use. This keeps their fur clean, teaches them how to groom, and gives them the attention and mothering they crave. Kittens will often get very dirty and mucked-up in between cleanings. Its okay to wash a kitten with warm water under a sink faucet, but try to focus only on the areas where they need it. A simple butt-bath will usually do the trick, but if you must get a kitten wet over more than half of its body, its safe to dry kittens over one week old with a hair dryer set on low and used very carefully, avoiding their faces.
You should also check their ears regularly for dirt and especially after initial rescue ear mites. Dirt can be cleaned gently with a cotton ball or swab. Consult your vet if you find the tell-tale ear mite coffee-ground type dirt.
If you dont have a safe flea spray, you can wash the kitten with a gentle dishwashing soap like Dawn or Palmolive , or a citrus-based shampoo, and comb all the fleas out afterwards. Make sure water temperature is lukewarm so as not to chill the kitten. Dry the kitten, if old enough, with a blow dryer or you can towel-dry it, then put it in a carrier and aim the blow dryer into it the carrier to gently dry the kitten with warm, circulating air.

Look For A Umbilical Cord
Like humans, kittens are born head first and arrive in a thin sack that the mother breaks open.
Then she licks her kitten to stimulate them to breath and bites off the umbilical cord, leaving behind a short stump that hangs off your kittens bellies.
Usually, the remaining umbilical cord falls off in around three days to a week.
Any kitten that you find with an attached umbilical cord is probably only a few days old.
Such young kittens rarely survive without a mother, even when you do your best. They have better chances with a surrogate mother.

Caring For 4 Week Old Kitten: How To Wean The Kitten
Encouraging your kitten to start eating and stop suckling come with quite a few challenges. However, as challenging as it may be, it can definitely be done. If there is one thing you should never do, itâs to abruptly change their diet.
Slow and steady always wins the race when it comes to these lovely creatures. The fact that they are still nursing may make you wonder how often you should give them formula, in that case a good rule of thumb is to give them 8cc for every ounce of their bodyweight.
Alternatively you may give them 104cc of milk, given to them 3 times a day. This is of course aside the obligatory introduction to food .
Homemade gruel is essentially a mixture of either high-quality dry kitten food or wet kitten food and their formula with a little bit of warm water.
To make the gruel using high-quality dry kitten food, you must let the kitten food sit in warm water for a while. Once softened, mix it with milk replacement formula.
To get them to try, place a small amount on your fingertip and let them smell it. Once they come closer, slowly move your finger toward the food bowl. Your kitten will follow you and will soon start lapping up the gruel. Gradually over the next few weeks, thicken the homemade gruel until the kitten is finally starting to eat plain kitten food.
Kitten Weight Gain And Developmental Milestones
Kittens should gain about ½ ounce every day or 4 ounces per week.; Weigh them at the same time every day with a kitchen or small postal scale. Lack of weight gain in a 24 hour period is cause for concern. Begin syringe feeding the kitten and have a plan in place for who foster parents should contact. To syringe feed the kitten, mix up the KMR as usual and then draw it up in a syringe. Put a nipple on the end of the syringe and place the kitten in the proper feeding position. - A 3-week old kitten should be fed every three to four hours. If you notice that your kitten sleeps for longer periods during the night, dont wake them up to feed.
- If your kitten is weak or doesnt eat much, you should feed it more frequently.
- Make sure the kitten is flat on their belly or leaning forward while feeding.
- Make sure the formula is warm , but not hot.
- Hold the bottle at an angle of 45-degree while feeding.

Twelve Week Old Kitten
- They need supervision. At this age, kittens are raring to go and will play fast and furiously, testing their abilities to climb and pounce, and then collapse to nap, recharge and start again.;
- Confine them to one room when they are home alone. This is for their own safety. Remove heavy objects from shelves that could harm them if they fall during boisterous play.
- Reduce the amount of times fed daily to 2, while still referencing the foods feeding guidelines.

What Do Kittens Eat Besides Milk
Once your kitten is about 3.5 to 4 weeks old, you can start weaning them off of the bottle. This is a gradual process that takes time and practice. The process usually looks something like this:
- Begin by offering your kitten formula on a spoon.
- Later, start offering your kitten formula in a saucer.
- Gradually add canned food to the kitten formula in the saucer.
- Increase the canned food in the saucer, adding less and less kitten formula.
If your kitten doesnt take to the spoon or the saucer right away, you can continue to offer the bottle.
As you progress through the weaning process, monitor your kitten and their stool to ensure that they digest everything well. If your kitten is doing well and isnt experiencing digestive issues , then you can gradually introduce more and more food.
At this stage, its also important to offer your kitten a bowl of fresh water to make sure that theyre staying hydrated.
When Do Kittens Drink Water
I had the babies out of their Sassy playpen and was lying on the floor with them. There was a bowl of water there and one of the kittens went up to the water bowl and stuck her head in it. She got a little in her nose and snorted a tiny bit. Then she realized that it was water and she loved it!
