History Of The American Shorthair

American Shorthair 101 : 9 Things to know before buying an American Shorthair Cat

European settlers to North America brought a lot with them, including the ancestors of what we now refer to as the American Shorthair. This breeds European forbears snagged a trip to the New World thanks to their affinity for hunting and catching rodentsa quality that was as prized on rat- and mice-laden shipping vessels as it was in the homes and barns of the countrys newest residents. It is believed that the ancestors of the American Shorthair came over on the Mayflower, and that they may have made the trip even earlier than that.

Once in America, these cats began to multiply, over time developing the traits that distinguish them as a unique breed. Due to their prized personalities, American Shorthairs were selectively bred in an effort to maintain and propagate their many likable qualities. Many of their physical traits can be traced to their early days in the country, including a dense coat that was ideal for withstanding cold winters while working and hunting outdoors, a moderately large size, and a muscular body.

The name American Shorthair was given to the breed in 1966 to distinguish them from the domestic shorthair, which is randomly bred and does not carry such specific traits. Today, American Shorthairs are the sixth most popular pedigreed cat breed, according to the Cat Fanciers Association.

Are American Shorthair Cats Aggressive

No, American Shorthair cats are not aggressive. They are relaxed around strangers, great with children, and gentle with dogs. Just make sure that playtime does not get too rough.

Interactions with very young kids should always be supervised. When it comes to smaller pets like birds and mice, it is better to avoid having them because this breed has strong hunting instincts.

Adopting An American Shorthair Cat

Like any pet, integrating an American Shorthair cat into your home should be done slowly. Educating family members on how to interact positively with cats will foster a loving relationship between your cat and kids, Dr. Bales says. Lastly, always be present during new interactions between your new cat and other pets or children to avoid injury.

American Shorthairs certainly have the structure of a working cat with a stocky, muscular body, broad chest, strong jaw, and thick neck. Their robust figure gives them an impressive amount of agility and endurance. They are medium to large-sized cats that reach a weight of 10 to 15 pounds and a height of 8-10 inches.

These short-haired kitties have a thick, dense coat with minimal grooming needs. Their fur thickened to adapt to their working lifestyles. As a result, it can protect them from the cold, rain, and even superficial skin injuries.

American Shorthairs come in various colours, including white, blue, black, red, cream, or silver. They can have a solid colouring or calico, bicolour, tabby, smoke or tortoiseshell patterns. Brown tabby and silver tabby American Shorthairs are by far the most common, though.

  • They are the best pest control around – American Shorthairs are the best hunters of the feline world and make it their job to keep your home rodent and insect-free!
  • They are low maintenance – Both their exercise and grooming needs are minimal, so they do not require a ton of looking after. They’re also pretty independent, so while they adore attention, they’re also happy to be on their own sometimes.
  • They are adaptable – Their well-balanced personality and adaptability mean they fit into all types of rooms. They get on well with children and other animals and adapt to new household members without feeling distressed.

    About The American Shorthair

Looking for a cat that will be a gentle companion, a playmate for your children, and a full-fledged member of the family? Look no further than the American Shorthair. This breed is known for its longevity, robust health, good looks, sweet personality, and amiability with children, dogs, and other pets.

The American Shorthair breed originated from cats following settlers from Europe to North America. Records indicate that even the Mayflower carried several cats to hunt the ships rats. For centuries, working cats flourished along with their pioneer owners and eventually established themselves as the native North American shorthaired cat. Their beauty and loving nature came to be valued as much as their rat-catching skills.

Late in the 19th century, there was an interest in developing and showing a shorthair cat representative of the North American working cat. One brown tabby American Shorthair was even offered for sale for $2,500 at the Second Annual Cat Show at Madison Square Garden in 1896. The Cat Fanciers Association chose to officially recognize this lovely cat as one of its first five registered breeds in 1906.

As pets or for showing, American Shorthairs are low-maintenance cats. These cats are not only beautiful, but healthy, easygoing, and affectionate. Males are usually larger than females, averaging 11 to 15 pounds, while females may weigh 6 to 12 pounds.

    Meet The American Curl Shorthair

The American Curl Shorthair is a small to medium-sized cat weighing between 5 to 10 pounds, with females typically being smaller. They have rectangular bodies, round faces, large walnut-shaped eyes, and ears that form a permanent swept-back positioning.

The American Curl Shorthair’s iconic ear curl is due to a dominant gene mutation that does not cause any pain to the cat. However, their ear cartilage is not flexible and can easily damage if not handled with care. Every American Curl Shorthair owner should be aware that these kitties’ ears are prone to ear infections, so you’ll need to clean them regularly and carefully.

American Curl kittens are typically born with straight ears, which gradually curl from a few days old to around four months. By this point, the ears will feel stiff at the base and more flexible at the tips. Moreover, American Curls’ ears do not all look the same. Some cats will have just slightly curled ears, whereas others have up to a 180-degree fold. However, they never fold entirely back so that they touch the head.

The American Curl Shorthair has a short, flat-lying coat with almost no undercoat. Their fur can come in a range of solid colours such as black, brown and white, and various patterns, including tabby, tortoiseshell, and Calcio. Likewise, their eyes can be any colour.
