A Good Choice For Your Pets: Blue Buffalo

Blue Buffalo Cat Food Review

If youre looking for a high-quality, all-natural dog food, Blue Buffalo is a good choice. Despite its popularity, this brand is still one of the more expensive dry foods available, as evidenced by the ingredients they use, which are whole-food blends and antioxidant blends formulated at low temperatures to improve vitamin bioavailability. Even though their recipes cannot be classified as human grade, Blue Buffalo is a good choice for your pet.

I Am Not A Veterinary Nutritionist

As I compare the two Blue Buffalo brands with the one Hills Science Diet brand , I am doing so not as an expert! In other words, I am not a veterinary nutritionist.

Instead, I am a loving pet owner who wants the best, most nutritious pet food for my four-legged friends. In addition, I also want to make sure my pets love what they eat. Plus, I want their food to not give them digestive problems.

Weruva Truluxe Steak Frites Low Phosphorus Cat Food

Weruva Truluxe Steak Frites is not a veterinary kidney disease formula, but it is low in phosphorus and sodium. If your cat is turning up their nose at some of the other low-phosphorus foods, this could be a good choice to keep them interested in eating. Check with your vet to make sure theyre OK with feeding it to a cat with early-stage renal disease. No prescription needed.

This Blue Buffalo dry dog food has a little larger kibble, and my small chiweenie has to chew more. Otherwise, it is similar to the other brand above, but with a little less protein.

I purposely wanted the larger kibble for my little dog. The extra chewing required will also help clean my dogs teeth.

Why Feed Cats A Low Protein Diet

Usually, when youre searching for the ideal food for your cat, protein will be one of the first ingredients you prioritize.

After all, cats are carnivores that rely heavily on a high intake of protein to keep them as fit and healthy as possible.

However, there are cases where protein might cause a number of problems for your kitty if they get too much of the wrong type.

If your cat has a health condition like kidney or liver disease, research indicates that a lower protein diet might be a better choice.

Your vet might recommend switching to more highly-digestible sources of protein, as well as cutting out certain ingredients like sodium and phosphorous.

Protein produces something called nitrogenous waste, which can place an additional burden on your cats kidneys, as well as other essential organs.

For cats, protein is a life-giving substance necessary for a healthy diet. You wont be able to cut this product out of your cats food entirely, but you can adjust their intake with a limited-ingredient meal option.

As always, youll need to talk to your vet to ensure youre choosing the right diet options for your kitty. Dont switch to a low-protein diet without a vet recommendation.

Dietary Recommendations For Kidney Disease Cats

Diet plays a major role in keeping cats healthy for long. If fed properly with correct nutrition, they will develop good resistance to diseases and stay away from chronic disorders. However, it is best to consult vets and consider their advice regarding kidney food for cats with renal disease. This food, in particular, will depend on minerals and protein levels added in its ingredients. We can either prepare homemade cat food for kidney disease or give commercial cat food for kidney failure.

  • Either way, it is best to maintain low phosphorus cat food for renal disease.
  • Besides phosphorus, other minerals like sodium, potassium, high-quality proteins, etc., should also be low but optimal.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids from various sources like fish oil are also essential to prevent renal failure.
  • Omega-6s is also important, which gives a good skin and color in felines .
  • As kidneys are responsible for disposing of waste, it is mandatory to maintain their health with a low protein level.
  • If kidneys do not function well due to high protein levels, cats can fall sick immediately.

The Best Cat Food Low In Phosphorus

BLUE Natural Veterinary Diet KM Kidney + Mobility Support Cat Food | Chewy

Now that you have a better understanding of your cats kidney disease and how a cat food low in phosphorus can help, lets take a look at our top picks.

Youll find two types of low-phosphorus foods on our list:

  • Prescription veterinary diets with carefully calibrated amounts of phosphorus, sodium, protein, minerals, vitamins, and fatty acids. These are usually alkaline, rather than acidic, foods.
  • Low phosphorus foods that include premium, natural ingredients but do not claim to address the range of kidney issues that prescription foods are designed to treat.

Youll want to check with your vet to see what they recommend for your cat. For prescription foods, youll have to provide a prescription or your veterinarians contact information to purchase.

Your vet often can offer their advice on non-prescription foods as well, ensuring that the food you choose meets your cats individual needs. Depending on your cats prognosis and any other health concerns that may be present, some non-prescription foods may not be recommended.

If you look at food ingredient labels, youll notice that many low phosphorus prescription formulas do not necessarily include organic meats and they are rarely grain-free. If you prefer to feed your cat an organic diet or a grain-free diet, you may have to make a choice between non-prescription low-phosphorus foods and feeding your cat what is essentially medicine for their health condition.

Picking A Low Protein Cat Food

Because low-protein diets for cats are often recommended on a prescription basis, theres a good chance your vet will give you advice on what kind of food you should be buying for your furry friend.

However, if youre free to do your research yourself, there are a few things to consider aside from a low protein content when making the right choice.

First, keep in mind that low-protein cat food isnt the same as giving your cat no protein at all.

Your kitty will still need protein to survive, but youll need to focus on choosing proteins that are high-quality, easy to digest, and highly bioavailable.

Other factors to look at include:

  • Taste and appeal:Cats with health issues can sometimes have lower appetites than their counterparts. Looking for a food thats highly appealing to your cats personal preferences is a good idea here. You could even consider using broths to make the food more attractive.
  • Restricted ingredients: Try to cut down on other ingredients which might be problematic for your cats internal organs. Lower levels of phosphorous are a good idea when youre trying to delay the progression of chronic kidney disease.
  • Vitamins and minerals: A low-protein cat food should usually contain added vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fatty acids, to support good health. The more beneficial supplements added to the food, the better.

If youre not sure about any of the cat food available for your furry friend, consider speaking to your vet for their recommendations.

These chemical preservatives have been linked to organ disease, cancer, and skin problems. Its easy to avoid BHA and BHT by selecting foods preserved with mixed tocopherols .

Because of the risk of dangerous preservatives entering the food at various points on the supply chain, its important to choose a transparent, communicative company that closely monitors their suppliers.

Blue Buffalo Vs Science Diet: Which Is Better

While my dog loves Blue Buffalo and Hills Science Diet, I have one major problem with the dry Blue Buffalo foods. My problem revolves around the smaller-kibble-size of the LifeSource Bits.

Through shipping and handling, those nutrient-enriched bits settle to the bottom of the bag. That means that my dog gets a smaller-than-normal amount when I first open the bag, and a larger-than-normal amount as he finishes up the bag.

That lack of consistency with the LifeSource Bits is why I now prefer Hills Science Diet. My dog loves the scent . But he likes the taste even more.

And when I did my unofficial taste tests and put both Blue Buffalo and Science Diet kibbles in a bowl, my dog usually finished up the Science Diet kibbles first.

While my dog loves the taste, I feel more secure that the nutrients in Science Diet are more evenly dispersed in each kibble. My hope is that he will get a more consistent dose of nutrients with the Science Diet kibbles.

The Catological Verdict On Blue Buffalo Veterinary Diet Wet Cat Food

From top to bottom, this is a below average wet product.

Meat is the first ingredient, and some organ meat is used, but fillers make up a large portion of the recipe.

Other than the Gastrointestinal Support recipe, the macronutrients are not great.

This is a not a good example of a wet food you should be feeding to your cat.

Based on the ingredients and the macronutrient profiles, meat is most likely NOT the main ingredient, and we can therefore say its a mostly plant-based cat food, which is not biologically appropriate for your kitty.

To review, on a dry matter basis, this food is 39% protein, 11% fat, and 23% carbs.

As a group, the brand has an average protein content of 35%, and average fat content of 17%, and an average carb content of 24%.

Compared to the other 2000+ foods in our database, this food has:

  • Below average protein.
  • Above average carbs.

Because meat comes first, but fillers are plentiful, our average rating for this brand is 2 stars.

Not recommended.
