The large intestine is much shorter than the small intestine, and its main function is to absorb water from indigestible materials . The waste products leave the large intestine as feces and move into the rectum where they are stored until elimination.

How Often Should You Deworm A Kitten
Your veterinarian should deworm your kitten every 4 weeks until they are 6 months old, then every 1-3 months . Kitten deworming schedules try to follow the life cycle of worms, which in most cases lasts between 4-6 weeks.
Within that time frame, the parasites mature from larvae into adults, reproduce, then die, sometimes moving throughout the intestines as they develop. For example, the life cycle of a roundworm is simple: after a kitten ingests an egg, it hatches in the feline’s GI tract, then larvae migrate through the lungs, liver, and muscle tissue. After several weeks, they return to the intestine to mature into adults.
Kitten deworming medication targets and affects each life stage differently, so administering a dosage at 4-6 week intervals ensures both the larvae and mature adults are killed once kittens no longer have their mothers immunity.
This deworming schedule should continue until they are 6 months old, at which age they will be old enough to begin preventative therapies. All felines should be treated with a monthly parasite prevention that controls fleas, roundworms, hookworms, and heartworm in cats.
Worm Treatment For Cats
Worm treatment for cats targets different worms than a wormer for dogs. While dogs need to be treated for tapeworms and nematodes, worming for cats aims at tape and roundworms.
Roundworms
Roundworms are short and have rounded bodies. They produce microscopic eggs which are shed in the faeces of infected cats, which presents a danger to other cats as they can be eaten by them. Eggs can also be eaten by mice or rats which can infect cats who prey on those rodents.
Roundworms are very common, particularly in young cats and kittens. The most common species are Toxocara catiand Toxascaris leonina. Toxocara cati can be transmitted to kittens through the milk of their mother even if the mother herself is over the infection. This means that practically all kittens are infected with roundworms from a very young age and they all require a worm treatment for cats.
Tapeworms
Tapeworm worming for cats most commonly treats Dipylidium caninum and Taenia taeniaformis. Eggs of Dipylidium caninum are eaten by flea larvae. This means that flea and tapeworm infections almost always go hand-in-hand. So if your cat requires a flea treatment, she will also need a worm treatment. As Taenia taeniaformis tapeworm eggs are eaten by rodents, cats only become infected with them during hunting. Therefore, infection with this worm is less common but should be expected in any cat that actively hunts.

It’s Important To Take Your Cat To The Vet Before Giving Them A Dewormer
If you suspect your cat has worms, always take them to the veterinarian for a physical exam and fecal test, which is an examination of the stool that reveals what type of worms your cat has.
“Generally speaking, if they have one parasite, they’ll have multiple parasites,” Jeffer said. “If they have roundworms, it’s not uncommon to see tapeworms or other worms as well, or ‘non-worms’ like coccidia.”
Certain single-celled microscopic parasites , including coccidia and Giardia, cause symptoms similar to those caused by intestinal parasites, but they are not true worms. They require different prescription medications to treat them dewormers won’t help.
Even though some dewormers do not require a prescription, do not skip the vet visit since different drugs treat different worms. Your vet can also determine if your cat may have other health issues that need to be addressed.
“It’s important to see your veterinarian so they can identify what parasites are present and then prescribe the appropriate deworming medication,” Sawyer said. “Your vet can also explain any risks for human disease, which is also parasite dependent.”
Depending on the type of worms found, your cat might also need follow-up deworming and a follow-up fecal exam to make sure no parasites remain. Your veterinarian can also identify any other health issues that might be going on aside from intestinal parasites.
Is Garlic A Good Option For Treating Tapeworms In Cats
Garlic should not be used to treat worms in cats. There has been no evidence to suggest that it is an effective treatment as a means to get rid of worms.
It may work to inhibit egg and larvae production, but it is not very useful beyond that.
More importantly, garlic and anything else in the Allium family, is poisonous to cats and dogs.
As such, it should never be given to them, even in small amounts for their own safety.
They can also be seen on the bed of a cat, and in the feces itself. You can identify these as they will look like small grains of rice.
In order for a tapeworm to find a host, it first needs to be ingested by an intermediate host. These can be things like mice or rats.
When the intermediate host is then eaten by a cat, the cat ingests the tapeworm and the parasite lives inside it. It is a cycle that doesnt end unless the tapeworms are killed for good.
Once again, garlic is not a suitable option for dealing with tapeworms in cats or dogs.
This is because garlic is poisonous to these animals and ingestion can result in hemolytic anemia.
