Tiger The Biggest Cat In The World

Weight: 165 to 715 pounds Body length: 59 to 90 inches Tail Length: 35 to 43 inches Location: AsiaConservation Status: Endangered

Tiger (Panthera tigris, the biggest cat in the world, comparison

Theres no question about it, tigers are the biggest cat species in the world. When it comes to sheer mass, no other cat comes close. Big tigers top out at around 715 pounds in the wild. Thats more than than the weight of 4 adult men.

Tigers have been considered to have 6 living subspecies and 3 others subspecies that recently went extinct. Today, the organization of tiger subspecies is under much debate, but one thing is clear, all tigers are endangered and need our protection. There only about 3000 left in the wild. It seems crazy that we could allow this most iconic member of the cat family to disappear forever.

One wild male tiger that was shot in 1950 in the Sikhote-Alin mountains of the USSR was reported to have been 846 pounds. Another tiger shot in India in 1967 weight 857 pounds when it was killed. He was definitely the biggest tiger in the world, which made him the biggest cat in the world. Now its stuffed body is in the natural history museum in Washington DC. Please dont shoot any more tigers!

Liger The Biggest Cat In The World

The liger is a hybrid cross between a male lion and a tigress .

The tiglon is a hybrid cross between a male tiger and a lioness .

Ligers enjoy swimming, which is a characteristic of tigers, and are very sociable like lions. Ligers exist only in captivity because the habitats of the parental species do not overlap in the wild. Ligers typically grow larger than their parents, unlike tiglons, which tend to be about as large as a female tiger.

The liger is the largest known cat in the world. It is wrongly believed that ligers continue to grow throughout their lives due to hormonal issues. It may be that they simply grow far more during their growing years and take longer to reach their full adult size. Further growth in shoulder height and body length is not seen in ligers over 6 years old, same as both lions and tigers.

Female ligers may also attain great size, weighing approximately 320 kg and reaching 3.1 m long on average, and are often fertile. In contrast, pumapards tend to exhibit dwarfism.

Other big cat hybrids can reach similar sizes the litigon, a rare hybrid of a male lion and a female tiglon, is roughly the same size as the liger, with a male named Cubanacan reaching 363 kg . The extreme rarity of these second-generation hybrids may make it difficult to ascertain whether they are larger or smaller, on average, than the liger.

Leopard / Black Panther

Whats this? Two cats sharing one spot? Nope, its the same species. The black panther is a leopard with a black coat. Its caused by melanism, a color variation that also appears with jaguars. Matter of fact, the Leopard and the Jaguar have more in common, they are very alike in appearance, except that the Jaguar is the Leopard big brother.

The Leopard has the largest tail among the wild cats. Their tail can get up to 43 inch long. Leopards will eat about anything, from beetles to birds to monkeys and even elands.

This is in the advantage of the Leopard, because bigger predators will fight them for their prey. The Leopard will wisely walk away from any fight it knows it will lose, and simply choose a prey that the other predator wont eat.

Who Would Win A Fight Between A Grizzly Bear And A Lion

Biggest Big Cat

Grizzly bear will always win in head to head fight with African lion because grizzlies are stronger, taller, and heavier. They also have the bigger paws with stronger deadly swipes than lion, though they are smaller than polar bear but still they are the stronger and dangerous than all other bears in the world.

King Of The Jungle: Lion

Only the second biggest cat in the world after the Siberian tiger, lions are popularly known as the King of the Jungle. Unlike most solitary big cats, lions are the only big cats that live in groups called prides. They are categorised into two broad types of lionsthe African lion and the endangered Asiatic lion. While lions do not rely on camouflage as much as the other big cats, their tawny-coloured coat allows them to merge well with their sandy habitat. Because of the lions specialised structure of vocal chords, its roar is the most famous and can be heard up to five miles away.

Where: Kruger in South Africa, Serengeti in Tanzania, Maasai Mara in Kenya. For the Asiatic lion, Gir Forest National Park in India.

The Biggest Cat In The World

Yes, sounds like the start of a joke, but What do you get if you cross a lion with a tiger? Well, actually you can get two things depending on the sex of the parents. We are interested in what you get when you cross a male lion with a female tiger, and that is a liger .

The liger is bigger than any of the cats that occur naturally. They dont happen in the wild because lions live in Africa and tigers live in Asia. That and they probably dont get along that well in the wild either. In terms of appearance you get a fair mix some faint stripes from the mother, a mini-mane from the father and growth promoting genes. What this results in is a animal weighing in at a massive 410 kg and this is lean weight.

In case you are wondering, a male tiger crossed with a female lion is known as a tigon. Again they inherit their appearance from both parent, however, they dont grow particularly big.

The Biggest Of The Big Cats

Top 7 Largest Big Cats In The World

Of all the living big cats it is the tiger that takes the crown. In particular it is the Siberian tiger that is the biggest tiger of them all. Weighing in at up to 3oo kg and measuring up to 4m in length this is one big cat. Just to put that in perspective, thats about as long as a family car and the weight of three grown men.

There was an unconfirmed report of a male tiger weighing 384 kg back in 1950 and this sounds completely plausible given that captive Siberian tigers have been recorded weighing as much as 465 kg . However, such captive tigers are considered overweight i.e. they are fat cats.

Compared to the slightly smaller Bengal tiger it appears Siberian tigers are far less likely to attack with only a handful of cases reported over the years. This is in stark contrast to the 375,000 people killed by Bengal tigers over the centuries.Whilst these figures may reflect Siberian tigers live in more remote regions, encounters also show them to be more reluctant to attack.

So, now we know the Siberian tiger is the biggest of all the big cats. Well actually no! The Siberian tiger is the biggest wild big cat. There is actually a big cat even larger than this but it only lives in captivity..
