What Do Customers Think Of Friskies Cat Food
Customers are, for the most part, happy with Friskies. People spend hundreds of millions of dollars on it every year. As one of the oldest cat food brands still on the market, Friskies has become a cat food staple. Many have been feeding it to their cats for decadesa tradition passed down from their parents and grandparents.
Not everyone is happy with Friskies cat food, however. On Consumer Affairs, for example, the brand has an overall satisfaction rating of just over 1 out of 5 stars. Complaints range from texture concerns to non-food objects found in cans to reports of illness.
Multiple customers have found pieces of plastic in cans of Friskies food. Between October and December of 2018, numerous reviewers said their cats started to refuse their Friskies food. Friskies says there were no reformulations around the time these reports started popping up. Its unclear whether or not the incidents were connected.
Pea Protein Soybean Meal Corn Gluten Meal And Other Types Of Plant Protein
Cats require 22 amino acids to stay healthy and can synthesize only 11 of them. The remaining amino acids, called essential amino acids, must come from their food. For this reason, cat food should be at least 30% protein.
But not all protein is equal each protein source varies in biological availability. Eggs have a biologic value of 100, while feathers have a biologic value of zero. Cats thrive on animal protein because it is highly metabolizable and nourishing.
Plant protein sources are cheaper and help to round out the guaranteed analysis, but they are less biologically available than animal proteins. Plant proteins and other types of less biologically available protein are processed inefficiently by the body, increasing the burden on the liver and kidneys.
Poor Quality Ingredients Commonly Found In Cat Food
Soy Soy is another common food allergen for cats and is also known to cause gastric upset. This ingredient is considered a very low priced filler ingredient. While it will certainly help make your cat food more full, the full nutritional benefit in this ingredient is questionable at best. Many cat food brands will tell you the allergy risk is very low with soy, but it is one of the most well known food allergens that cats deal with in commercial pet food. Overall, this is a pretty low quality ingredient.
Gluten meal This ingredient is associated with causing allergies in cats. It is also known to raise sugar levels in cats. Over time, this can lead to diabetes. Gluten refers to the proteins found in wheat endosperm which is a type of tissue produced in seeds thats ground to make flour. Many pet food manufactures will use this ingredient to help boost the protein percentage of the food.
None of these four ingredients is contained in the entrée with lamb and rice formula.

Top 5 Ingredients Analysis
When we review any cat food, we always take a close look at the top 5 ingredients. These ingredients make up the vast majority of the nutritional content in the food.
Used as a source of moisture and flavor, meat broth is normally considered a higher alternative to plain water, even though it doesnt provide much nutritional value. Its unfortunately this broth is from an unnamed meat source. Normally, we like to see named meat sources for the broth such as chicken broth or turkey broth. In this case, we are left guessing what meat source is used to create the broth. I can literally be from almost any animal and that is a bit concerning.
Chicken is a very popular ingredient for pet food and in this case, they are referring to whole chicken. This is a very high quality meat source and we are pleased to see it listed. However, whole chicken loses about 80% of its content during the cooking process since the majority of whole chicken is water. After the cooking process is complete, the amount of whole chicken remaining is substantially reduced. Therefor, while whole chicken is a great source of meat protein, this ingredient alone is not enough to provide sufficient levels of meat protein in a cats diet.
How To Get My Cat To Eat Homemade Cat Food
It will be easier to switch a cat from canned food to raw or cooked. Typically, the transition takes about a week. You start serving food in 20/80 ratio, then 40/60, 50/50, and replace the old food gradually. However, the process of transition may take months dont give up. Some pet owners suggest starting with raw/cooked food treats, such as chicken wings.

When it comes to a healthy cat diet, its almost impossible to make it ideal. Whether you use wet or dry cat food, there are always some drawbacks in formulas these can be ingredients, artificial components, flavors, or texture. Each cat has individual needs, and covering them all with mass-market industrial products isnt always the right decision.
Besides, cats are carnivores they eat raw meat and dont need grains. This is what many owners forget about when buying kibbles with wheat and corn. As a result, their beloved pets suffer from allergic reactions, stomach upset, sensitivities, poor digestion and metabolism, excessive weight, and so on.
Ideally, a feline diet should consist of what these hunters ate originally prey and fish. You can help your cat and create an ideal menu for it.
Have you ever tried to make your own cat food? This option would be perfect, and its not as complicated as it seems. Actually millions of people are already cooking homemade cat food, homemade kibbles, and even homemade kitten formulas themselves!

Bha Bht And Ethoxyquin
These chemical preservatives have been linked to organ disease, cancer, and skin problems. Its easy to avoid BHA and BHT by selecting foods preserved with mixed tocopherols .
Ethoxyquin is more stealthy while its often not added to pet food itself, it can sneak a ride in with fish meal.
Because of the risk of dangerous preservatives entering the food at various points on the supply chain, its important to choose a transparent, communicative company that closely monitors their suppliers.

Overall Is Friskies A Good Choice
Friskies isnt a brand wed recommend. Its selling points are not ingredient quality or nutritional integrity. It is, however, one of the most affordable brands available.
If you choose to buy Friskies, avoid their dry recipes. Friskies dry cat food is packed with low-value plant ingredients like corn gluten meal and soybean meal and rely on vaguely-named animal by-products instead of named meats.
Instead, opt for Friskies wet cat food. Their wet recipes contain some undesirable additives, including carrageenan, artificial colors, and artificial flavors, but are meat-rich with minimal carbohydrate content.
Stick to the patés to avoid starchy thickeners. Read the ingredient lists carefully to minimize harmful additivessome Friskies foods contain artificial colors and others dont.

A History Of Recalls Coverups And Scandal
Some cat food brands are plagued with problems. Some facilities have done poorly in FDA inspections. Others have been implicated in crime. Recalls can happen to the best cat food brands, but good brands always handle them gracefully. In contrast, a bad cat food brand becomes even worse when things go wrong. Instead of issuing a recall and being frank about what happened, unscrupulous brands attempt to cover up the problem.
Secondly, recalls shouldnt happen more than once every five years. If your cat lives for fifteen years, and you continue to feed them they same food, they could be exposed to a recall three times or more. Thats gambling with your cats health.

Once you know what youre looking for in a food, you can start to think about brand reputation. When you know that you can trust the company youre buying from, youll feel more comfortable feeding your cat food from that company.

Eukanuba is a pet food company known for the manufacture of dog and cat formulas. The Eukanuba Entree With Lamb And Rice Cat Food blend is one of the adult cat formulas under this brand. According to the company, this formula is ideal for cats of one year and beyond. It is said to offer your cat all the nutrients it needs to grow steadily and healthily.

Iams chose to name this new formula Eukanuba, a term originated by jazz era personality Hoagy Carmichael, meaning the tops or something supreme .
A History Of Customer Complaints
Thanks to blogging, social media, and sites like ConsumerAffairs, customers have a louder voice than ever before. A web search will give you the consumer pulse in moments.
The worst cat food brands earn thousands of complaints. Youll know if people have found pieces of bone or metal in the food, noticed their cats getting sick after a meal, or have other negative experiences with the brand.
Sometimes things go wrong. When your company is huge and sells to millions of customers each year, the likelihood that youll have complaints increases. In this sense, numerous customer complaints arent always indicative of a bad company. Look at the consistency of the complaints and pay attention to the brands response to them.

Friskies Cat Food Review
Lets consider the dietary needs of cats for a moment. Cats, from the Order Carnivora, are obligate carnivores. Meat eaters.
Keep that in mind.
Purina Friskies Meaty Grills shows a kitty cooking meat on a barbeque, which is kinda quaint, but also very misleading because the #1 ingredient in Friskies dry food is cereals and/or cereal by-products and/or vegetable by-products. Excuse the subtle pun, but that goes against the grain of a cats fundamental dietary needs.
Lets say cereal grains are the #2 reason why cats suffer slowly and die prematurely of kidney failure. If cereal grains are #2, then #1 would be cereal grain , or to call it a different name lets say cereal waste products. Vegetable waste products arent much better.
If you compare the different Friskies formulas, such as the elegantly named Seafood Sensations and Surfin& Turfin, youll find theyre all the same theyre all mostly cereal waste products.
Purina get away with this because most people are easily fooled by pretty packaging, marketing, and cutesy TV ads, but the reality over the lifespan of your cat is much different:
If youre still reading , then Ill leave you with one final statement food colours.
If youre currently feeding this, feed it to some chooks instead. Or bin it.
