Kitsap Humane Society offers low-cost spay/neuter surgery for cats and dogs to Kitsap County pet owners that meet our annual income guidelines.
Surgeries are performed on weekdays, by appointment only, and must be scheduled online.
Low-cost Spay/Neuter Deposit
Effective Feb. 16, 2020, a small deposit will be required when you make an appointment to reserve your pets surgery . Your deposit will be deducted from your balance due on the day of surgery. If you have a voucher for the surgery, your deposit will be refunded when you present your voucher on the day of surgery.
Cancellations If you need to cancel your pets appointment, please notify us no later than 24 hours before the surgery date and your deposit will be refunded. Late cancellations or no-shows will forfeit their deposit.
Does my pet qualify?
- Owners must be residents of Kitsap County or a Mason County resident who has been the recipient of a Mason County Certificate from a partnering organization.
- Owners must meet annual income guidelines of $66,050 or less for a three-person family and $73,350 for a four-person family.
- Your pet must be at least 16 weeks of age and not older than 7 years of age.
- All dogs must be under 75 pounds.

Introducing Your Kitten To Children
For children, meeting a brand-new kitten is exciting. Talk to them before meeting the kitten to prepare them. Introducing your kitten to children, especially younger ones, should be done gradually and for short periods. Frequent handling and gentle playing are important, but children must be taught that your kitten is a sensitive, living creature.
Show them how to pick her up and hold her by slipping one hand under her chest and holding the front legs gently but firmly with your fingers. At the same time, cup the other hand under your kitten’s hindquarters. Encourage slow movements and help the children understand that fast, choppy movements can scare the kitten.
Never pick her up by the scruff of the neck or by her hind legs. Children must learn not to pull the kitten’s tail or ears, squeeze her or poke her, make loud or threatening noises or move toward her too suddenly. These points should be mentioned to the children prior to meeting the kitten.

Following neuter or spay surgery at Petco, your pet will need time to recover. This helps them avoid complications that can require further treatment. Here are some tips to help your cat or dog through their recovery period:
- Make sure your cat or dog refrains from strenuous activityincluding running and jumping for at least two weeks or for as long as instructed by your veterinarian.
- Find your pet a quiet place indoors to rest, free of other animals that can cause distractions or excitement.
- Avoid bathing your pet for at least 10 days following the operation.
- Check the incision and stitches daily to ensure that the incision is healing and not infected.

On the average, kittens reach sexual maturity around 6 to 9 months of age. This means they are now fully-capable of reproduction. Since one of the inherent aims of neutering is to induce infertility or sterility in the cat, neutering should be done before the kitten achieves full sexual maturity. Thus, the best age for a kitten to get neutered or spayed is before it reaches the age of 6 months.
Unfortunately, no two kittens will have the same exact growth rate. Some kittens can reach their reproductive maturity by around 4 months of age, while others may become sexually mature only upon reaching 12 months of age.
Given the variability of feline growth rates, veterinarians now recommend pediatric neutering. This allows veterinarians to perform the surgical procedure in kittens that are as young as 6 weeks. There are people who object to such recommendations, of course. They say that it exposes the young kitten to needless harm. Early neutering can also lead to several developmental problems.
In 2017, the American Association of Feline Practitioners endorsed neutering kittens at 5 months of age. This was the recommendation of the Veterinary Task Force on Feline Sterilization and released through the North American Veterinary Community Conference, also in 2017.
