Both spaying and neutering refer to the surgical process of removing reproductive organs in an animal. Simply put, spaying describes the female procedure , while neutering describes the male one . Both are commonly called fixing or desexing the animal. In both males and females, anesthesia is required, and you must make an appointment with your veterinarian or spay/neuter clinic. Typically, spaying is a longer and more complicated procedure than neutering, and your female cat will take more time to heal.

When Should I Have My Cat Spayed Or Neutered

Kitten neuter, closed, figure 8 knot.

The commonly recommended time to get your cat spayed or neutered is before they reach sexual maturity at around 5-6 months old. Cats can also be spayed and neutered when theyre 6 weeks or older.

You may have heard that its best to wait until a female cat has had her first heat before you get her spayed, but veterinarians now agree that this isnt the case.

Every cat is an individual, so its best to book your cat in for an overall health check and examination before you arrange their surgery. Your vet may want to take a blood sample, and they will be able to recommend the best time for your individual cats surgery based on their health and circumstances.

How To Know When Its Time To Spay Or Neuter Your Cat

Most veterinary professionals recommend that owners sterilize both male and female cats around four or five months old, which is when they reach sexual maturity. That means female kittens at that age may have their first heat and become pregnant. Kittens from animal shelters may undergo early-age neutering, which means they have the procedure around eight weeks old.

Hearing that your new kitten requires surgery may be hard, but a spay/neuter is a routine procedure. Its an operation that vets will usually perform under general anesthesia. After a cat is unconscious, a vet will remove its reproductive organs. In female cats, the vet will remove the uterus, ovaries, or both. In male cats, the vet will remove the testicles.

Since the operation requires anesthesia, a cat will likely undergo blood work before the surgery. It may also require several hours of observation afterward. Many pet owners also opt to have microchips put under the skin while their cat is unconscious.;

Most owners pursue the operation to avoid unwanted pregnancy, but there are various other benefits to spay/neuter surgery. Cats can give birth to 20 kittens each year, which means potentially having to care for and pay for 20 additional cats. That only contributes to the animal overpopulation problem, which causes shelters to euthanize four million pets a year.

Read More About Neutering Your Cat

Neutering is a surgical procedure, undertaken to prevent both female and male cats from reproducing. In males the testicles are removed this is the main source of the hormone testosterone, so levels of this hormone fall after the surgery.

It is common practice for the ovariohysterectomy technique to be used for cat spaying in UK. However individual practices have their own protocols in place, and both methods of cat spaying – ovariectomy and ovariohysterectomy are an accepted technique for spaying of female cats. Once spayed, your cat will no longer be able to fall pregnant, and will also not have any seasons. If you have further questions about the procedure, please do speak with your local Vets4Pets vet.

In all cases, neutering involves a general anaesthetic. Your cat will come into the practice in the morning, stay for the day to have the operation, and in most cases will be reunited with you the same day. Although all surgical procedures come with some risk, neutering is the most common procedure undertaken at our vet practices, and the techniques are very safe. Neutering cats is also a relatively quick procedure, especially males, which helps keep the risk low.

There are some alternatives to the cone available, such as specially designed onesies, which may be more suitable to your cat. Some owners also fashion protective wear out of human clothes such as babygrows, but care should be taken in these cases as they may be easier for your cat to get around.

Why Is Spaying And Neutering Important

Spaying helps prevent uterine infections and breast tumors, which are malignant or cancerous in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats. Spaying your pet before her first heat offers the best protection from these diseases. Neutering your dog/cat prevents testicular cancer and some prostate problems. Overpopulation can be detrimental to the health and wellbeing of the community and individual animals. Spaying/Neutering helps to keep the population in check.

On average, it costs £30-£80 to neuter a male cat whereas the cost of spaying a female is £50-£100.

Neutering a cat is a procedure in which a male cat is castrated by having its testes removed. The process of neutering female cats is referred to as spaying. It involves the removal of the cats ovaries and uterus.

Why Is It Important To Spay And Neuter Cats

Spaying and neutering cats prevent unwanted pregnancies and homelessness. According to the ASPCA, 6.5 million domesticated pets are surrendered or found homeless every year. Cats suffer tremendously in this equation.

Cats breed heavily, which is why having strays around can quickly lead to unwanted pregnancies. Indoor cats arent exempt, either, particularly if you have multiple cats living in the same home without being fixed. Cats reach sexual maturity around 6 months old, so you might wind up with a litter if you dont act early.

Spaying or neutering your cats is a responsible action taken by loving pet owners. Unless youre a breeder, youre risking putting kittens out into an unforgiving world. Many people want a cute kitten until it starts to grow up and become a burden.

Luckily, in recent years, more information and affordable options have been given to owners everywhere. So, instead of worrying about financial implications associated with this surgery, owners can find options that work best for them.

Getting Your Boy Cat Snipped

Your boy cat will need to have a simple operation, called the snip. This can stop him from spraying in your house to mark his territory, which can be very smelly, and getting nasty injuries from fights. He’ll also be less likely to wander off and get run over, as cats that are snipped tend to stay closer to home.

Having your cat snipped will protect him from a nasty disease called FIV – which is the same as HIV in people, but for cats. It’s spread through cat bites, often between males fighting over a female. It can’t be caught by people.

Why You Should Neuter Your Cat

Neutering your cat has two main advantages: reducing the risk of the cat contracting some diseases, and curbing the behaviours associated with sexual maturity. The following are some of the benefits of neutering a cat:

  • Nuisance control Theres usually a lot of calling and fighting when cats are looking for mates. Neutering a cat will reduce the noise and fights that can occur when a female cat is calling for males. Unneutered male cats usually spray areas to mark their territory, leaving a pungent smell.
  • Population control ;Its best to have litters of kittens that can be cared for together. A growing population with no one to care for them could cause welfare issues. They would also be prone to getting infections. Female cats should be neutered before they have kittens.
  • Safety issues ;If cats have kittens and they are not being fed well, theyll most likely wander off to hunt. Neutering cats can reduce the chances of cats going to hunt for some wildlife, thus potentially saving a life!
  • Health issues Infections of the womb are a common occurrence in female cats that have not been neutered. Mammary tumours are another common issue for female cats in later life. There are also the risks associated with pregnancy and birth as well as the risk of infections being passed on to kittens.
