How Can I Know Im Selecting A High
Mindy Bough, CVT, senior director of client services for the Midwest Office of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals emphasizes the importance of high-quality kitten food. I dont recommend generic or store brands, Bough says. Buy from a reputable company — one that veterinarians recommend more frequently, she says. Research has determined these kitten foods provide excellent health.
But how can you be certain a kitten food is of high quality? One way is by checking the label. It should at least contain the following: Meets the nutritional requirements of kittens established by the American Association of Feed Control Officials . AAFCO is a group of state and federal officials who regulate pet food. Even better, look for this: Complete and balanced nutrition for kittens based on AAFCO feeding trials. Complete and balanced nutrition means your kitten will require no mineral or vitamin supplementation. In fact, remember that too much of a good thing can be bad for your kitten, causing severe medical problems. Use supplements only if your veterinarian recommends them.
Also use caution with homemade diets. For example, all-meat homemade diets can be low in calcium, leading to a mineral imbalance that causes hyperparathyroidism, a disease more common in rapidly growing kittens. If you use a homemade diet, make sure its been formulated by a reputable nutritionist, Bough says.
When Bottle Feeding Kittens Becomes Necessary
At times, a kittens diet needs to be supplemented with or switched to a milk substitute designed specifically for cats. With especially large litters, you may want to give the smaller or less assertive kittens time alone with the queen so they have easier access to the best food availablemoms milk. Bottle feed the kittens who are growing the fastest at this time so they dont go hungry. Feral kittens under the age of four weeks who no longer have access to a nursing mom will also need to be bottle fed.
Do not feed newborn kittens cow or goat milk or human or dog formula only a milk replacer made specifically for kittens will provide appropriate nutrition. Talk to your veterinarian if you are concerned that a kitten is failing to nurse, grow, or develop as expected.
Feed Different Types Of Food
It’s fine to rotate through foods to give your cat a little bit of a variety and actually this can be beneficial to your cat. This is especially important if you’re feeding a predominantly dry food diet. Cats can become serious dry food junkies if that is all they are fed! If you then need to feed them wet food in the future it can become a real nightmare.
I’ve discussed ways to get your cat to drink more water in a separate article. The very first one is to feed a wet diet, so when needed you definitely want your cat to accept it.
Feeding different consistency foods is great at making sure this will be simple. Different textures are important too to make sure your cat will happily eat a chunky wet food with gravy as well as a smooth mousse.
Just dont chop and change every day and do it on your terms, not your cats.

Homemade Food For Cats
Did you know that more and more people are feeding their cats homemade recipes? Specifically if their cat is suffering from a pathology. This type of homemade diet has become very popular in the last couple of years as it gives owners the opportunity to control what their cat is eating in turn allowing them to make sure their animals are receiving all the correct nutrients.
If you have not yet experimented with homemade recipes, this could be your opportunity. There are two common homemade diets which you can follow:
- Raw diet or BARF: also known as the ACBA diet, this diet focuses on offering raw food to felines, either chopped or passed through a mincer. It is important to emphasize that it is very important to freeze food before giving it to your animal, to avoid possible parasites or pathogens.
- Homemade cooked or semi-cooked diets: Some owners choose this diet over BARF in order to prevent our cat from contracting any virus or parasite. As in the previous mentioned diet we can choose to cut the food into tiny cubes or crush all the food to facilitate intake.
What Can A Kitten Eat
Of course, you want to provide the best possible home for your kitten which includes a healthy diet. A 6-week-old kitten can be fed both dry food and wet food . Their small teeth may still struggle with kibble, so it is a good idea to soak the kibble in lukewarm water at first. Yarrah Grain-Free cat food is very well-suited for kittens. The kibble is rich in protein and fat which is important for the kittens growth and health.

First A Transitional Time
A mother cat will start her litter on the weaning process when they’re about a month old. The kittens will begin to show an interest in cat food around that time. Slowly, they can be given tastes of kitten food that is soaked in water until it’s quite soft. Solid food can be gradually increased as the kittens nurse less often over the next few weeks. When a kitten is about eight weeks old, the weaning process will probably be complete, and he’ll be eating 100 percent kitten food.
Can Cats Eat Garlic
Garlic is toxic to cats, so it should never be fed to a cat. Garlic, like onions, is part of the allium family. Cats cannot process any of the foods in this group.
Beyond that, compounds in these foods actively damage cats internally. Eating just 1 clove of garlic is enough to cause hemolytic anemia and gastroenteritis. Untreated, garlic toxicities can lead to organ damage.
Why Are Vegetables In Cat Food?
Vegetables are included to ensure that your pet is getting all the nutrients it needs. Meat in cat food is cooked. During this process, it loses some of its nutritional value.
Vegetables are a low-calorie means of reintroducing those nutrients back into the meal. Vegetables also have additional minerals and vitamins that cannot be derived from meat. Or, at least in high quantities. While a cat may not need those minerals and vitamin levels to survive, it can benefit from them.
Its also worth noting that wild cats do naturally consume small amounts of plant matter. A wild cat will devour the entirety of its prey, including the stomach and its contents. Additional nutrients, fibers, vitamins, and minerals can be obtained this way. Namely, because the prey animal has partially digested the food, making it possible for the cats system to finish the job. Domesticated cats dont have the same option.

Cats are naturally lactose intolerant, which means that dairy upsets their digestive system. Cats should avoid drinking cows milk, as it contains lactose. Once kittens are weaned from drinking their mothers milk, their ability to produce lactase, an enzyme that helps to digest lactose, is reduced.
If your cat has been fed milk, they may experience the following signs:
On a daily basis, cats should be provided with fresh, clean water to drink. Although alternative milk products like soy do not contain lactose, soy contains anti-nutritional elements which can make it difficult for a cat to digest.

Change Their Feeding Area
If you are unable to find a medical cause to your cats lack of appetite, its possible that they are experiencing stress in your home. Environmental changes can cause your feline friend to shy away from their food, especially if they are experiencing any stress in their feeding area. Because of this, it may be beneficial to move their food to a new area in your home that is separated from any other animals or potential stressors.
What Do You Do When Your Cat Stops Eating
We have already listed some techniques above on how to boost your catâs appetite but hereâs a quick summary to it. Tweak the wet food of your cat to entice him to eat again. A tuna or cold wet cat food can be hated in the microwave for a few seconds to enhance its flavor. Or, you can also offer your cat some canned tuna, canned chicken, or canned kitten food, to boost the appetite of your pet. Try to experiment by choosing different shape, texture, or flavor of food to increase your catâs interest in food.

Can Cats Eat Fish Yes But
Cats love fish so you wont have to force them to eat it. However, its important to carefully choose what type of fish you feed him: its better to choose a fat type of fish like tuna, salmon, or mackerel because it contains a fatty acid that your cat cannot produce by himself .
Too much fish is a bad thing for your cat and would cause some trouble if you dont be careful! They can eat raw fish but its always better to cook it!
We recommend salmon for its omega 3.
Be careful with canned tuna: they often contain too much salt and it will damage your cats kidneys in the long run.

Kittens may struggle with eating for a variety of reasons, depending on age and health concerns. Newborn kittens who have become orphaned or otherwise separated from their mothers may be especially hard to feed because they haven’t learned to eat solid food and are only used to nursing. Kittens who are suffering from any illness, feral kittens, and kittens who are afraid of people may also reject food. But regardless of what is keeping your kitten from eating, it is crucial that your kitten eats. There are several things you can try to encourage a reluctant kitten to eat, but if your kitten does not eat for 24 hours, take her to the veterinarian for emergency treatment.

How Much Wet Food Should You Feed Your New Kitten
- Not a substitute for professional veterinary help.
Kittens are too sweet for words. We love their little meows, their playfulness, the way their tiny little claws cling to us when we scratch their bellies. Speaking of their belliesits important to feed our kittens right, and that can feel complicated to do. Especially when it comes to wet food.
How much wet food should you feed your new kitten? We set out to answer that question and give you some other important knowledge when it comes to keeping your kitty healthy.
Can Cats Eat Squash
Squash is nutritious, and your cat can safely eat it. Besides being a great source of vitamin A, squash contains:
- Vitamin C
Adding small amounts of cooked squash to your cats diet can bring a lot of health benefits to the table. Squash can boost an immune system and help maintain a healthy heart and vascular health. Thiamine, in particular, enables the body to process carbohydrates as energy.
Squash must be cooked. Your cats digestive system will not be able to process vegetable matter easily. The process of cooking begins to break down the food, making it easier for the cats digestive system to process and extract nutrients from it.
Cooked squash is soft enough that dicing it into small cubes is fine. However, pureeing and mixing it through kibble or wet food is also a good option. Dribbling pureed squash over kibble is also a great way to introduce more water into a picky cats system.

They Dont Have A Routine
Kittens need to eat regularly to support their growth and energy needs! And while some owners may want to leave food out for their cats all the time, having food to graze on wont help your pet develop a clear routine – or could cause your kitten to under or over eat.
To ensure your kitty is only hungry at the right times, create a feeding schedule and keep to this routine. Kittens of around 8 weeks old should be fed three to four times a day, reducing this at 12 weeks to three times a day – in the morning, middle of the day, and again at night just before bed time.
Keep in mind that kittens will often want to use the litter tray straight after eating so this is a great time to reinforce some litter tray training!
Feeding A Stray Kitten
Sadly, in the spring and fall, its not uncommon to find a stray kitten in your yard or on the street. Stray kittens will need the same food and mealtimes as home-raised kittens, but you should take it to a veterinarian as soon as possible to better determine the kittens age and to check for parasites that could affect the animals growth.

Can Cats Eat Spinach
Spinach is packed with vitamins and minerals. Spinach also happens to be safe for cats to eat, with one exception. Cats that experience urinary tract problems should not be fed spinach. This vegetable contains calcium oxalate, which can cause urinary crystals to develop.
Blanching and slicing up spinach can be a healthy way to boost your cats mineral and vitamin intake. It is important to do this infrequently to prevent calcium oxalate levels from growing too high.
Should the benefits of including spinach outweigh the risks, you should be aware of the signs of urinary crystals. The signs to watch for are:
- Bloody urine
- Painful, difficult, and/or frequent urination
- Passing urine outside of the litter box
- Excessive genital licking
Contact your vet and remove spinach from your cats diet immediately if any of these symptoms arise.
The Food Bowl Isnt Clean Enough
Cats are very clean animals who like to eat and drink from fresh clean bowls! If old food has been left in the bowl or their eating area is dirty, this can easily put them off their next meal. Be sure to remove any uneaten food after each kitty meal, regularly change their water and keep their feeding space clean. Using ceramic feeding bowls can also stop any food smells absorbing into the bowls.
Keep in mind that wider shallow bowls are best for cats as they dont like it when their whiskers are pushed against the side of their dinner plate!
