Most commonly described as unprovoked biting, this behaviour can be very upsetting. You are sat on your favourite chair, cat curled up purring on your lap as you gently stroke them and them, wham! A vicious bite to the hand, seemingly out of nowhere. Understandably, this causes anxiety and concern amongst pet owners.
The first thing to emphasise is: dont take it personally! This is just a form of communication from your cat, it is not intended as aggression in the true sense. It has been shown that repetitive petting of sensitive areas, such as the base of the tail in cats, can lead to overstimulation and excitement effect in cats. Which can lead to adverse sudden behaviours such as biting. In essence, your cat is just telling you that they have had enough of the stroking, now.
Although commonly described as being unprovoked, most cats will actually give some warning that they are reaching their petting threshold. These signs are often just quite subtle. What Is A Love Bite
Love bites generally start as licks and graduate into gentle nips and nibbles that don’t break the skin. Some cat behaviorists believe that love bites are reminiscent of a cat’s kittenhood when their mothers would lick and nibble them during grooming. So if your cat is giving you a gentle nibble or lick, it can be seen as a sign of affection.

“So, if your cat begins to ‘wrestle’ with one of your limbs, redirect their bunny kicking play to a cat toy instead. And the next time your cat plops on their back, seemingly to invite a belly rub, refrain from doing so if there is a history of grabbing your hand or Thumper-like moves.”

Think about the games your cat plays. When he chases a ball or mouse toy, his goal is to win the game by catching the object and controlling or defeating it. His perception is to dominate using whatever skills he has in order to defeat and or kill the prey. He is not acting aggressively, but merely utilizing the only method he knows to be successful. A cats main form of play involves biting and scratching in “winner takes all” battles, whether with another cat, a toy mouse, or an unsuspecting human who finds he has become his cats plaything.
One of the first rules for human companions is “do not teach your cat that hands are toys.” If you ignore this advice, those tiny claws and teeth will soon grow into razor-sharp “hooks,” and you may end up bearing the scars.
Cats are smart and learn quickly that a pair of hands make great toys, and they will delight in the challenge of catching them no matter what they have to do. Cats also learn who is a toy. Take note of who plays with your cat and whether or not they use their hands. If a cat learns that your hands are not a toy, he will not perceive them as such and therefore he will not play with them. On the other hand, if you use them as a toy, he will always think of them as a plaything and may even attack them even when you are not being playful with them.

At the most unexpected moment, the cat can jump out of its hiding place and bite you on the ankle. When a pet eats your leg, dont try to run or breakaway. This behavior is typical of prey, and your cats predator instincts will only make it bite you harder.
Instead, carefully try to push the cat. Since the prey usually does not move towards the predator, this action will confuse the pet. As soon as the cat realizes that you are not acting like prey, it will immediately let you go.
After release, stand still for a while and do not pay any attention to the cat. The pet will stop biting when you stop giving it the pleasure of catching you by the ankles.
