Why Does My Cat Stare Into My Eyes

Why You Should Never Look Into A Cats Eyes

Why does my cat sit and stare at me?

Its easy to become mesmerized by a cats eyes and find yourself gazing into them. Somewhere in the back of your memory, you might recall being told staring at a cat is something to avoid at all costs. There are several theories as to why.

A cats eyes are windows to the underworld. Looking into them gives you a glimpse of untold evil, releasing it to bestow bad fortune upon you. At one time in history, people would not look into a cats eyes because they feared they would be cursed forevermore.

Today we have better insights into a cats psyche and are aware there are valid reasons not to hold their gaze for any length of time.

When To Be Concerned About Your Cat Staring

Cat staring is completely harmless the vast majority of the time. In rare instances, however, it could be a sign of an issue. For example, theres a strange condition known as feline hyperesthesia syndrome that can affect cats. They will sometimes stare at a wall for a long time, and then suddenly act in bizarre fashion. Cats with feline hyperesthesia syndrome may dart back and forth, attacking their tail and meowing or howling loudly. They may then start to aggressively groom themselves.4

If your cat is showing signs of feline hyperesthesia syndrome, make an appointment with your vet. This condition is typically not harmful, but the behavior associated with it can sometimes be an indication of a more severe health problem. Your vet can perform a thorough examination to determine exactly what is happening with your pet.5

But what if your cat is perfectly healthy, and still staring at the walls all the time?

Even though you cant see or hear anything, your cat probably can. Cats have extremely sensitive ears, so they can hear things you usually cant hear. A cat, for instance, can hear rodents through walls, or the creaking noises a house makes when it settles into the ground. Cats can also hear air moving through the ducts in your home.

So, as long as your cat doesnt exhibit any odd behavior after staring at the wall, theres a good chance that nothings wrong.6

When To Worry About Your Cat Staring

The vast majority of the time your cats staring is a completely normal, albeit sometimes unnerving behavior. However, if your cats stare takes on an empty, unfixed quality, then something else may be wrong. A cat may appear to be staring when in reality he or she may have retinal detachment. Retinal detachment is when the layer at the back of the eye detaches from the globe and can occur following high blood pressure. When the retina detaches it can make the pupils constantly dilated leading to an empty stare. Causes of high blood pressure include kidney failure, heart disease, and hyperthyroidism. If you notice your kittys pupils seem constantly dilated or that their gaze isnt fixed on a specific target, go see your veterinarian immediately.

Cat staring may become an issue if it is followed by aggression as well. Always note your cats body language when they stare to determine if an attack is imminent. Try to deescalate the situation before another critter or your toes get attacked!

Because your cat cant see too well, shes apt to stare for longer at an empty space where she happened to glimpse something earlier. If you notice changes in your cats eyes you should have the vet look her over and make sure everythings okay.

Older cats who are starting to develop neurological problems may stare into space a lot. If your cat shows signs of confusion or anxiety as well as prolonged staring, talk to your vet. There are lots of ways to help keep an older cat calm and happy as she ages.

Cats are also prone to high blood pressure, which can produce wide and staring eyes. This should be caught at your annual vet check-up. High blood pressure in cats can cause a range of additional issues, but if its picked up and addressed promptly it neednt be a problem.

One of the most frustrating problems Ive had to deal with as a pet parent is staying on top of my cats desire to play. While this is typically hard to do, toys like these that allow cats to play by themselves make the job one heck of a lot easier.

The hits in my household are ridiculously affordable: cat springs, ball track toys, & kick sticks. I have a slew scattered around the house, so when my cats get bored, even if Im busy or not even home, my furries are able to actively play.

A Little About Staring Cats

Cats have unusual quirks we all love and admire. They are some of the most outward creatures when it comes to showing how they feel. But some actions, like staring at you while you sleep, might make you feel not-so-warm and fuzzy inside.

No worriesyour cat isnt plotting your untimely death. But there are a few reasons that they might creep up on you to look at you while you sleep.

What Are The Reasons For A Cat Staring

If your cat seems to always be watching, take pride in the knowledge that you are a very special human. Cats tend to limit eye contact with people that they dont like, but will stare intently at someone theyre more comfortable around.

A cats stare can feel very intense, because they can keep staring for a very long time because of the way their eyes work. They have a third eyelid, known as a nictitating membrane, which moves diagonally over the eye.

The third eyelid is very thin, almost invisible, and moves over the eye very quickly. This third eyelid cleans and moistens the eye, so the cat doesnt need to use their main eyelids very often. As a result, they can keep on staring for what can seem like forever.

In some cases, a cats stare could be a sign of a health problem. Your cat might be staring if theyre losing their eyesight, though youll probably notice accompanying signs like your cat bumping into things when walking.

Also pay attention to the direction your kitty is looking in if theyre looking at you, its fairly safe to assume that theyre trying to get your attention, but if theyre staring into space then there may be a cause for concern, especially if you struggle to get your cats attention. If there are no other signs of ill health, your cats stare is simply a way to show that youre one of their favorite people.
