Runny POOP? Getting to the Bottom of Kitten Diarrhea

Food allergies, overfeeding, or eating inedible items can also cause diarrhea in kittens. Items like bones, fabrics, or kitty litter can create intestinal blockages if swallowed. While a poor diet is one of the most common reasons kittens suffer from diarrhea, there are other possible causes as well.

Diarrhea In Cats: Causes, Symptoms, & Treatment

When Should I Take My Kitten To The Vet

The most important thing to keep in mind when you have a kitten is that thereâs never a wrong time to reach out to a vet. Not only will this provide you with peace of mind, but it will also help catch any potential problems quickly.

As a general rule of thumb, if diarrhea persists for longer than a day, you should bring your new kitten to the vet. If your pet is demonstrating other symptoms such as loss of appetite, lethargy, or vomiting, itâs absolutely necessary that a vet sees them sooner than later.

If you’re concerned about your kittenâs diarrhea, you can always reach out to Pawp and our team of trained and trusted veterinarians.

What To Do If Your Cat Has Diarrhea

Treatment for diarrhea should not be attempted at home. Always talk with your veterinarian to ensure your cat receives proper treatment. Over-the-counter medications and so-called natural substances used by humans with diarrhea may actually be toxic or dangerous for your cat. It might be tempting to try to change your cats diet as a way to resolve the diarrhea, but this is not recommended. Even if a food change resolves the current issue, it does not mean that the underlying problem has gone away. You could be delaying a diagnosis and proper treatment for your cat.

Your veterinarian will need to work through a list of possible causes by examining your cat and pursuing various diagnostic tests. The earlier that this process is started, the better the outcome for your cat.

Wait And See Or Rush To The Vet

Kittens, adult cats that are small in size, and geriatric cats are at special risk of becoming dehydrated from even a single episode of diarrhea.

If your kitten seems OK after a single bout of diarrhea, it may be safe to simply monitor him. However, if you notice any lethargy, fever or change in behavior, call your veterinarian for an appointment as soon as possible. If your kitten seems fine but has recurrent episodes of diarrhea that do not seem to be resolving, it is also time to call your veterinarian for a non-emergency appointment.

If your kitten is passing blood in his stools or if you notice any weakness or other signs of debilitation along with the diarrhea, contact your veterinarian immediately and have your kitten seen as soon as possible. Red blood in the poop usually indicates a problem with the lower intestine/colon or rectum. Black blood in the poop usually indicates a more serious problem higher up in the digestive tract. Your veterinarian, based on a complete physical and perhaps some lab evaluations, may give you indicated medication and a prescription diet.

If there is no blood, call your vet and ask about over-the-counter medications or options for at-home treatments for your cat. Because there are so many causes of diarrhea, the treatment will vary.

Hard Balls Or Pebbles

What Should Healthy Cat Poop Look Like

Hard balls or pebbles of cat poop can point to constipation in your furry friend. This stool will often be a rich brown color, and may occur inside or outside of the litter box.

You may notice your cat straining each time they attempt to pass stool, or may take longer in the litter box than usual. Some cats are even noticeable struggling each time they have a bowel movement, or may begin to avoid the litter box all together.

Not only will constipation cause their stool to be noticeably hard, but you may also notice that litter does not stick to this stool.

Stool in constipated cats will often lack moisture, meaning litter will have nothing to cling to.

Poop in constipated cats will also be in hard segmented balls, as their stool is often separated during passing due to struggling so much.

Does your cat have runny poo all the time? Or maybe theyre producing hard and dry pellets? The texture of your cats poo reflects the quality of diet theyre being fed, and gives you a window into their current health and well-being.

You spend a little time every day scooping your cats poo out of the litter box, but have you ever stopped to inspect it? Faecal examinations are a routine part of the health check your cat should be receiving every 6 months, but theyre also something you should be doing at home in between vet visits. Learn to interpret what the texture of your cats poo is telling you about their health and nutrition. Often, the first place a poor diet shows up is in the poo.

While your cat may experience one-off bouts of stomach upsets, their poos shouldnt change too much from day to day if theyre being fed a regular diet. However, a sudden change in their diet can result in diarrhoea and different food going in will mean different poos coming out. If you want your cats poos to change for the better, using our Cat Food Finder to improve their diet is the best way to go.

Recognize The Signs And Symptoms Of Diarrhea In Kittens

You should know that it’s normal for kittens to have softer poop, Demos says. A kitten’s stools are not quite as dry and hard as an adult cat’s. But if your kitten’s poop is consistently shapeless and mushy or is liquidy, then it’s diarrhea.

Kittens with diarrhea may have accidents outside the litterbox. You may also notice diarrhea on their paws or around their tail .

The Perfect Poo Texture

When your cat is in good condition and being fed the right diet for their age, breed and activity level, they will produce healthy poos. The perfect cat poos are not too runny and not too dry. They should be shaped like long logs or small nuggets and youll find that theyre firm but still soft when you press down on them, much like the consistency of playdough. These poos will be comfortable for your cat to pass, and easy for you to remove from their litter tray each day.

A major benefit of feeding your cat super premium food is that their poos will improve, becoming smaller and less smelly, due to the high quality of nutrients contained in this food. By using our Cat Food Finder to understand the right diet for your unique cat, you can optimise their health and visibly track the improvement in their health through looking at their poo.

Cat Diarrhea: When Is It Serious And How Do I Stop It

Kitten goes poop standing up

One of the most common problems we see in veterinary medicine is gastrointestinal upset/diarrhea. Depending on your cats lifestyle, you may or may not be readily aware of the details of her bathroom habits. In addition, cats are very fastidious about grooming so the tell-tale signs of diarrhea may be missedespecially in the early stages. For this reason, routine veterinary visits are important. If you do notice your cat has diarrhea between visits, what could be the cause? When should you worry and consult your veterinarian? What can you do at home? Ill discuss these answers here. What are the causes of cat diarrhea? This would be an exhaustively long list if we went into everything that can cause your cat to have loose stools, but here are some of the general categories:

How may you be able to help stop cat diarrhea?Because there are so many potential causes of diarrhea in cats, you should check with your veterinarian if your cat is having it regularly. Obviously some of these causes need specific therapy, but some of the others may resolve on their own with simple, supportive care. In those cases what might your veterinarian advise you can you do at home?

Generally, if your cat had one somewhat soft stool but is still happy, playful and eating normally, you can probably safely wait to see what the next bowel movement looks like before taking any major steps. Some of the red flags that should make you more concerned are:

  • Loss of appetite

What Your Cats Poop Says About Their Health

Your cats poop says a great deal about their health. Here are some of the more common things to watch for in cat stool.

Diarrhea The presence of runny stool or diarrhea is usually accompanied by vomiting. While it is natural to assume the worst when your cat has diarrhea or vomiting, these health issues can be common for cats. When diarrhea is rare, not to worry much when it is severe or does not let up, we recommend you contact our veterinarian. Cats with diarrhea may have an inflammatory bowel disease, food allergies, food indiscretions, and unknown causes of the inflammation. It can usually be treated or controlled. Diarrhea can also be due to parasites or viruses, so it would be wise to have the cat checked by your veterinarian to find the cause.

Red blood in stool Fresh, red blood in your cats stool may indicates parasites, cancer, stress, and food intolerances. If a cat eats decorations or other foreign substances, that could irritate the colon and cause streaks of brighter blood.

Black, tarry blood in stool If you notice black, tarry blood in stool, it indicates that your cat has digested blood. This generally happens when your cat has bleeding in the stomach or small intestines. This kind of stool is from higher up in the intestine, such as the stomach or small intestine. This type of bleeding can be caused by ulcers, parasites, foreign bodies, food allergies, and viruses.

Things To Know About Kitten Diarrhea

  • Although it happens, kittens are not prone to diarrhea.
  • Kittens who have frequent hairballs may also experience periodic bouts of diarrhea, but this may indicate another problem, like inflammatory bowel disease, that needs to be investigated.
  • Kittens who spend a lot of time outdoors may be at an increased risk for internal parasites or ingestion of inappropriate food, which could lead to diarrhea. If your kitten goes outside, check that your neighbors are not feeding him. Eating too much or eating food he is not used to can give a kitten diarrhea. Check your yard and your neighbors yards for poisonous plants that your kitten may have nibbled. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center has a list of toxic and non-toxic plants on its website.
  • If you decide to switch your kittens food, introduce it gradually, mixing it with the old brand in increasing amounts over a period of days to ensure an easier transition for your pets GI tract.
  • Over-the-counter remedies like Pepto Bismol and Kaopectate can be dangerous to cats due to salicylate toxicity. These should not be used! Always check with your veterinarian on the correct medication and dosage for the weight and age of your cat.
  • Remember that your cat cannot control the diarrhea. So please do not scold your cat for the accidents. He cannot help it, and adding stress may only make his diarrhea worse.
  • Know the signs of an emergency. Call you veterinarian immediately if your kitten has diarrhea and:

Yellow Or Green Diarrhea In Cats

Discolored feces can sometimes be related to something your cat has recently ingested. For example, grass or green-colored material may cause green discoloration, which is not always a medical concern, although some animals with green feces have gallbladder disease.

Yellow feces can be an emergency related to liver disease or failure, zinc poisoning, immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, or an overgrowth of certain bacterial pathogens.

Kitten Diarrhea: Common Causes Symptoms And Treatment

Much like human babies, kittens can be sensitive to sudden changes in environment or diet. They can even suffer from food allergies. These factors can cause diarrhea, a condition in which the kitten will release frequent, liquidy stools. If you notice loose stools, you should monitor their bowel movements to make sure the condition is not chronic or a sign of a more serious problem.

When it comes to kitten diarrhea, it could be just a reaction to new foods, but it could also be a sign of a more serious, underlying illness.

If your kitten is suffering from diarrhea, its not time to panic. Dr. Erick Mears, a BluePearl veterinary specialist who is board certified in internal medicine, points out that kitten diarrhea is usually a treatable condition. Its pretty common and tends to be very responsive to treatment. Most of the time the things you look for are dietary causes or parasites, he says.
