Why Should You Adopt

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.

Adopt A Kitten In Chicago

You want to adopt a kitten, but how do you know if adopting a kitten is the right move for you? Below are the top five reasons to adopt one of our ARF IL kittens up for adoption :

  • Young kittens are easier to train. This includes litter box training, what they should and shouldnt be eating, and more.
  • Younger cats are easier to socialize. The earlier you start getting kittens used to interactions with humans and other animals, the more successful the training is likely to be. Just be sure to use plenty of patience, treats, and affection.
  • You shouldnt declaw your cat, but you can train your kitten to be gentle with their clawsand if you start with a kitten, youll have a lot more time to train them before their claws get big and powerful.
  • Kittens tend to be more playful and active than older cats. You can engage in play with your kitty throughout the day, and get lots of laughs and smiles from their tiny but fierce purrsonalities.
  • When you adopt a kitten from the Animal Rescue Foundation IL in DuPage County , youll be able to give your kitten a long happy life, and enjoy years and years of companionship and love with them.

Paws Chicago Staffers Drove To Florida To Rescue 53 Animals After The Devastation Of Hurricane Ian Another Team Will Make The Trip Next Week

A dog rescued from the path of Hurricane Ian is examined at PAWS Medical Center. PAWS is a no-kill organization, and every one of the pets will get a chance at a forever home.

    Anthony Vazquez/Sun-Times

Volunteers with PAWS Chicago returned from Florida on Tuesday with more than 50 pets from shelters in areas hit hard by Hurricane Ian.

Most of the 53 animals were already in shelters when the storm struck. PAWS partnered with Humane Society Naples in Collier County, which operated as the nerve center for animal shelters from the area, to bring the 12 dogs and 41 cats to PAWS Medical Center in Little Village.

Many of the shelters lost their roof, theyve closed down, theyve lost their power, said Paula Fasseas, founder and chair of PAWS Chicago, the largest comprehensive no-kill animal welfare organization in the Midwest. They just didnt have good conditions for these animals.

A cat waits to be checked in at the PAWS facility in Little Village. Twelve dogs and 41 cats rescued before Hurricane Ian in Florida arrived in Chicago on Tuesday.

    Anthony Vazquez/Sun-Times

Three PAWS rescue vans full of supplies left Chicago for Florida on Saturday morning. The aim of the mission was to empty shelters in the direct path of the storm to make space for a possible influx of animals displaced by the hurricane in the coming days.

    About Our Adoption Process

20th Annual Paws Chicago Furball Event Raised Money For The City’s Largest Humane Organization

As you can imagine, the current health crisis has impacted the manner in which we are able to adopt out our cats. Chicago Cat Rescue is a foster based organization, which means that all our cats and kittens are housed in private foster homes until we find them permanent homes. We generally begin by having a phone conversation with prospective adopters in order to find out what you’re looking for and to learn something about you and your home situation. CCR adopts to homes in Chicago and the very near suburbs, which are within a few miles of our Chicago foster families. Our minimum adoption age is 25.

We then put you in touch with our foster parents, so you can contact them directly to schedule meet n greets with our cats in their foster homes. Meeting our cats in their foster homes and having in-depth conversations with our foster parents is a great way to learn about your prospective cats’ personalities and temperaments. Right now, these visits are taking place if all parties are comfortable. In other instances, some of our adopters and foster parents are having virtual visits via Facetime , and our cats are able to participate too! All family members are expected to participate in these virtual or in-home visits. During this challenging time, were trying our best to continue to give our cats the opportunity to find their forever homes. At the same time, we hope to maintain the integrity of our adoption process.

Dogs Cats Rescued From Hurricane Ian Arrive In Chicago

PAWS Chicago receives dogs, cats rescued from Hurricane Ian

Dozens of animals rescued from Hurricane Ian will be up for adoption soon in Chicago.

CHICAGO – As resources continue to pour into Florida for those devastated by Hurricane Ian, PAWS Chicago is doing its part to help.

On Tuesday evening, more than 50 animals that were rescued from shelters impacted by Hurricane Ian arrived in Chicago.

“We emptied the vans of donations and filled them up with pets cats and dogs, and they just arrived, and were so excited to see them here,” said Susanna Wickham, CEO of PAWS Chicago.

The nonprofit sent rescue vans to Floridas hardest hit areas where they picked up 12 dogs and 41 cats from three different shelters.

“There are kittens, you can hear them meowing. They are, it seems, excited to be here,” said Wickham.

“These are really, really nice dogs. Each one, I spent time with before we left, easy to put their collars, leashes on, very affectionate,” said Joan Harris, PAWS Chicago director of training and canine behavior.

On Tuesday, those animals arrived safely to the Paws Chicago Medical Center after a nearly 24-hour journey.

“We know how important pets are to their families and to the people who love them, so we want to make sure that were doing everything we can to relieve some of the pressure that the region is feeling,” said Wickham.

It’s a sigh of relief for several Florida shelters some of which were destroyed when Hurricane Ian made landfall.
