Why Does My Cat Sit On My Shoulder

Can You Train A Cat To Like Being Held

How to teach a cat to sit on your shoulder

Teach your cat to remain calm when shes being held by using rewards and positive reinforcement. A verbal cue, like hold, can be used to prepare your cat to be touched and lifted; give the cue and gently touch your cats side without lifting her at all. Go slowly with training, and be sure your cat stays relaxed.

Are There Any Other Symptoms That Are Abnormal

It is not normal for a healthy cat to have any discharge from the nose, debris in the ears, excessive salivation, bad breath, or unusual odor from other parts of the body.

Vomiting, particularly vomiting of clear foamy fluid or bile-tinged material, is cause for alarm.

Gums, skin, or eyes that are pale may indicate anemia, while a yellow tint may indicate jaundice, and a bluish tint may indicate a lack of oxygen. Delaying treatment for these disorders, even by a few hours, can be fatal.

“If you have any concerns or questions about your cats health, visit or call your veterinarians office.”

Because signs of illness can be very subtle, if your cat does not seem right to you, err on the side of caution and to make an appointment for a veterinary examination as soon as possible. If you make it a habit to give your cat a general once-over on a regular basis, you will have an idea of what is normal and will be more likely to catch minor problems before they become major health issues. If your cat will not eat for more than 24 hours, or if you notice any breathing problems, straining in the litterbox, or abnormalities in eyes, seek immediate veterinary attention. If you have any concerns or questions about your cats health, visit or call your veterinarians office they are your best and most reliable resource to ensure your pets wellbeing and health.

Your Cat Is Trying To Claim You

If you think about it, your cat trying to claim you is rather cute. They are known to lie on everything from their cat toys, beds, and even your clothes. This is because cats are very much territorial creatures.

They mark their territory by spreading their scent or simply sitting and claiming ownership over a particular spot. So next time your kitty plops itself on you, you can assume theyve said the equivalent of mine.

What does it mean when a cat headbutts you? What does it mean when a cat rubs against you? What does it mean when a cat stares at you? What does it mean when a cat licks you?

Can You Train A Cat To Sleep On Your Shoulders

You can train your cat to stand, sit, or lay on your shoulders. Ive seen cats riding on their owners shoulders plenty of times in public. Its always a little amusing and usual, but theyre there because they want to be.

I wouldnt say you can train your cat to sleep there though. Cats sleep when they want, not on command.

If youre making your shoulders a cool and comfy place to hang out however, there is a good chance they will end up napping there. You just might have to be patient and not fidget or move too much!

To start training your cat, just simply place or encourage your cat to climb onto your shoulders. Then praise them and give them a little treat when they are there.

There isnt much more to training a cat than that in most instances. Just repeat the process often, and eventually, when you ask your cat to hop up onto your shoulders they will associate doing so with praise and treats and willingly do so.

Final Thoughts On Why Your Cat Lays On You

Its no secret that cats have a whole host of quirky behaviors , but we love them all the more for it. So the short answer when it comes to your fur-babies settling themselves on top of you, is that youre comfortable, warm, and familiar.

Theyre also strengthening your bond by doing so and expressing that youre their treasured human.

It seems cats are more affectionate than some have claimed them to be after all. And lets not forget, these felines are highly intelligent creatures. Its, therefore, no wonder theyd jump at the opportunity for a soft, comforting, heat-generating human form over a regular old cat tree.

So lets give credit where credit is due. And perhaps embrace these chest moments as good old-fashioned quality time with our little fur-babies.;

Shoulder Cats Aren’t That Common

Though cats have a pretty universal attraction to heights, only some are shoulder cats. This often has to do with a cat’s physical abilities and limitations. Young, energetic cats will be quick to spring themselves onto someone’s shoulders, while older, more lethargic cats won’t have the interest. Additionally, balancing oneself on a surface as precarious as a person’s shoulders requires a fair amount of athleticism, so heavier, less agile cats are unlikely to make the leap.

That said, keep in mind that each cat is different. For some, jumping and resting on your shoulders will be a natural move. However, not every cat that has the physical ability will have the desire. Cats can be trained to do this as a kind of trick, but only if they are receptive to it. No matter a cat’s age, weight, or agility, they will not do something they don’t want to do.

What Changes Would I See In Coat Appearance And Amount Of Shedding

Cats that are not feeling well do not tend to groom themselves very well. Therefore, you will usually see a messy or greasy coat, mats of fur, or clumps of loose hair. In some cases, you will see a difference in the coats shine or an increased amount of dandruff.

Cats that are grooming themselves excessively may also have a problem. Excessive grooming may be a reaction to a skin problem such as allergies, a parasite such as fleas, mites or ringworm, pain such as that from arthritis or a bladder problem, or a response to stress. These cats might over-groom on all parts of their body, or they may lick themselves in one area so much that they develop bald spots and the skin beneath may be red and raw or may have a rash.

Cat Sits on Shoulders: Surprise Ending

Putting aside all the instinctual and primal behaviors of a cat sometimes they just want to be comfortable.

If this means sleeping on your shoulders, then so be it. This sleeping position will probably be ticking the boxes for some of the other reasons I cover in this article, but let us not ignore the fact that you may just be very comfortable to sleep on.

They Just Want To Be Warm

Have you ever noticed how your cat loves to catch the first ray of sunlight in the morning? Whether its on the floor or in the window box, your cat is right there soaking it all up. This is because cats prefer resting in warm placesand who doesnt? When the sun sets and that warmth is gone, a cat could find some heat alongside a radiator, but its far comfier on top of you when youre in your favorite recliner or when youre snuggled beneath the bedcovers. So, these are the moments when your feline friend will most likely seek you out. I remember in my youth how my cat would nestle up against me in my bed; he felt safe with me and I felt safe with him. A wonderful feeling, indeed!

Humans Are Actually Quite Comfortable

Cats sleep around 15 hours a day or more, so naturally, theyre looking for a comfortable spot to catch 40 . Whether it be on a sofa or stretched out in a laundry basket, cats require a soft and cozy place to relax. Imagine how cozy you feel to a cat who discovers you in bed under a number of plush blankets. Your belly immediately becomes the coziest place on earth, far superior to a mere pillow or cat bed.

What Does It Mean If A Cat Jumps On Your Back

Cats, especially kittens, love jumping on the back of their owners as a playful gesture. The feline wants to play with you and they think theyll entice you by jumping on your back. Over time, kittens will outgrow this behavior, but its important to correct it as some cats tend to bring it with them into adulthood.

Elises Favourite Tip

One of the most frustrating problems Ive had to deal with as a pet parent is staying on top of my cats desire to play. While this is typically hard to do, toys like these that allow cats to play by themselves make the job one heck of a lot easier.

The hits in my household are ridiculously affordable: cat springs, ball track toys, &kick sticks. I have a slew scattered around the house, so when my cats get bored, even if Im busy or not even home, my furries are able to actively play.

Some Cats Love The Sounds Your Body Makes

The natural sounds of your body may be soothing to your cat when he sleeps on top of you. The steady rhythm of your heartbeat and breath, as well as the rise and fall of your inhaling and exhaling, help lull your cat to sleep. Your smell is also pleasant as your cat associates it with you and the care, companionship, and safety you provide him. In short, many of your natural bodily sounds and smells may be relaxing to your kittythough perhaps not ALL of your sounds and smells. I could go into detail here, but Ill refrain!

Why Is My Cat Moving Weird

Your cat might be acting weird because he or she is feeling the stress, too. A couple of symptoms of a stressed cat may include over-grooming or being extra needy. Other signs to look for are a decrease in your cats appetite, aggression and withdrawal. These, too, might mean your cat is undergoing stress.

Your Cat May Like Your Chest Because Its A Large Flat Surface Area

Theres a case to be made for the amount of surface area and the flatness of a surface leading to increased comfort for sleeping and resting on.

What cat wouldnt prefer to sprawl out and lay down with as much space as possible?

Some of the most uncomfortable places to rest on a human body in my mind are body parts like knees and elbows small, bumpy, and not at all soft in comparison to even moderately comfortable places to rest like arms and legs.

Our tummies, our laps, and our chests are probably the three largest, flattest areas to rest on. So it makes sense that cats are happy to sit and sleep in all these three places quite often.

Theres one other body part I can think of thats both flat and large and thus likely to be quite comfortable to rest on our backs but how often are we lying flat on our stomachs to give our cats a chance to test out the comfort of this spot?

Can You Train A Cat To Sit On Your Shoulder

Shoulder-sitting is instinctual for some cats. But it can also be taught! Yes, contrary to popular perception, it is possible to train a cat.

In the above video, a cat dad demonstrates how to gently introduce your cat to the idea of shoulder-sitting. He suggests starting slow. You want to encourage the cat, and never try to force it out of its comfort zone. Lots of pets and some delicious treats will help.

If your cat doesnt sit on your shoulders, dont worry. They may learn in time. And if your cat is as heavy as mine, you may not want them up there, anyhow.

Where Are The Tendons And Ligaments In Cats Shoulder

In four legged animals, the shoulder is made up of the scapula/shoulder blade bones, and the humerus/upper bone of the front leg. Conditions that affect the tendons and ligaments of the shoulder will be apparent in a cats ability to walk, run and jump.

You may notice this involuntary movement in your cats legs, abdomen, neck or head. The muscles may contract lengthwise or vertically on the cats body.

They May Like The Spot Because They Can Hear Your Heartbeat

Ive seen this explanation circulating around the net quite a lot, and while I think its possible its one of the reasons cats like to rest on chests, I also think its one of the most unlikely.

I think our cats would be just as happy to sit and sleep on our chests even if they couldnt hear our heartbeat; I feel theyre much more swayed by the warmth and other factors and maybe not much, if at all, by this one.

What Not To Do To Shoulder Cats

My cat sits on my shoulder like a Parrot and lets me walk ...

Having a shoulder cat may seem a trendy thing. However, if you go your kitty outside, ensure she has her harness and leash. If startled while you have a walk in the city, they may bolt and get lost. Something like Escape Proof Cat Harness with Leash will do the work.

A cats strong hindquarters and back muscle allow them to leap horizontally or vertically while their very flexible musculoskeletal system makes it very easy for them to balance. However, they do use their claws in anchoring themselves.

If your kitty has long nails, it may scratch you as it tries to land on your shoulder. Always ensure you trim their nails regularly. Alternately, go for cat nail caps like YMCCOOL 100pcs Cat Nail Caps. We dont recommend declawing

It is unwise to deter or stop your cat from sitting on your shoulder since its such a great thing. Furthermore, if your kitty seeks your attention first, you can lean for it to jump or ignore her if you are not interested.

However, sometimes it can be so much and disrupt your activities such as going to the bathroom, reading newspapers, or eating. Also, you have a demanding or very heavy. In such a case, consider training to stop the habit. You shouldnt give in to every demand that your kitty has.

‘why Does My Cat Sleep On My Head’

First of all, its warm on the top of your head, said Marilyn Krieger,;certified cat behavior consultant and proprietor of the Redwood City, California,;based operation, The Cat Coach. Though its warm on other places, the heat from your body usually escapes from you head, which can influence your cats decision on finding the warmest spot to sleep. A cat’s average body temperature is 102 degrees Farenheit and they need to maintain heat for proper basal metabolism, so seeking an external heat source allows the body to not have to work as hard to stay warm while sleeping.

This is just one of;several theories Krieger;has. Consistent among several of her suggestions is the notion of comfort; a cat seeking hospice at the head of a bed may not only be seeking warmth, but evading the tics of a restless sleeper.

A lot of people toss and turn;or have restless legs. Theres always some movement, but some people are more agitated than others, Krieger says. Being towards the head, theres less agitation than there would be lower down. The cat wouldnt have to move as much or be as accommodating.

In other words, your cats sleeping habits may say a little something about your own.
