Kudrow has generally refrained from performing “Smelly Cat” live under most circumstances, despite being constantly asked by fans. The song began to experience a revival in 2009 when a dance remix began circulating on the Internet. Upon learning about the remix, Kudrow said “I can’t wait to hear if it is any good”. In September 2009, Kudrow performed “Smelly Cat” live with actress Courteney Cox, who portrayed Monica Geller on Friends, during the Rock A Little, Feed A Lot benefit concert. Kudrow was originally intended to introduce musician Sheryl Crow, only for the audience to ask her to sing “Smelly Cat” instead. Kudrow then invited Cox to join her for the performance, for which the stagehands provided Kudrow with a guitar at Cox’s insistence. The Friends reunion marked the first time the cast returned to the iconic sitcom’s set together since the show went off the air in 2004, though you’d never know it thanks to the easy way they slid back into the lives of their old characters. But for Lisa Kudrow, there was one part of Phoebe Buffay that didn’t return so naturally.
While visiting The Ellen Degeneres Show to promote the new season of her Netflix show Feel Good, Kudrow reminisced about the highlights of the reunion, which included playing a duet of her signature song “Smelly Cat” with Lady Gaga.

“I was really nervous when I first heard that. And then I prepared. I realized I had to learn ‘Smelly Cat’ again. I tuned my guitar and realized I don’t know the chords,” Kudrow admitted.
So she did what anyone in this day and age would do to find out how to re-learn something: she googled it.
“All the chords were there for Smelly Cat!” Kudrow told DeGeneres with a laugh. “So thank you world, for posting the chords.”
Although Phoebe was Friends‘ resident music maven, in real life, the star’s guitar skills only extended to her 10 years on the show which explains why she needed a bit of help after so many years of not picking up the instrument. When Ellen asked if Kudrow played any other songs besides “Smelly Cat,” Kudrow cheekily answered she only knew the other Phoebe songs that she made up.

Lisa Kudrow was also a part of Mad About You and was seen playing the role of Ursula Buffay, a young waitress in a restaurant. Jeffrey felt that Lisa Kudrow would be a perfect fit for the role and the team decided to audition her for the part. Marta Kauffman also added that Lisa nailed the auditions and not only met their expectations but also elevated the role and bough a unique essence to the character. About the song Smelly Cat.
Smelly Cat written by Friends writers Adam Chase and Betsy Borns first appeared in season two, episode six entitled The One with the Baby on the Bus and can be found on the soundtrack album Friends Again released 1999. The song is about a poor feline who has been mistreated by its owners and has ended up with a pungent odour possibly due to the type of nourishment its been receiving.

Lisa also shared that Gaga “really almost made me cry” when the Oscar winner thanked the Friends alum for creating a character who encouraged viewers to embrace their differences. Lisa also discussed the impact that the pop star’s music had on the actress’now-23-year-old son , who she was expecting in real life during Phoebe’s pregnancy story line.
“Coming from herbecause my son was in grade school, all the kids were listening to Lady Gaga, and her whole message was, everyone be yourself and just be you,” Lisa recalled. “That was amazing.”
