Owl Schreien Or Rufen

When walking around at night you may have the privilege of hearing from those stereotypically wise owls. A hoot is represented as either schreien or rufen. Eine Eule is the best term when talking about an owl, and although most owls live solitary lives, a group is called a parliament. The direct translation for that in German is Parlament.

Why Is A Cat Always Female In German

Why isn’t animals gender dependent on the biological gender of the animal?

Irrespective of cats’ gender we say »die Katze« and for horse »das Pferd« etc.

Why is so?

  • 6Grammatical gender is not based on biological sex. What would an biologically neuter animal look like? “Masculine”, “feminine” and “neuter” are just misnomers for different categories of words.Mar 6 ’17 at 16:50
  • 3Sowohl für gemischte Gruppen als auch für unbestimmte Individuen benötigt man eine generische Form. “Ein Kater oder eine Katze, dessen oder deren Geschlecht hier keine Rolle spielt, saß vor dem Fenster” wäre reichlich umständlich.
  • TakkatMar 6 ’17 at 19:55
  • Imho, gender is qua definitionem not biological. What is biological is the sex. The sex of a person, the sex of an animal. Gender is the role model, associated with a sex. It*s a sociological, cultural category. I guess gender of animals aren’t investigated yet. This would mean, that for the same species, you would find different roles/behaviour in different populations.

Biology has two genders , but German grammar has three genders , some African bantu-languages like Swahili even have more than 20 genders, which in this case are no longer called genders but noun classes.

This already should tell you, that biological genders and grammatical genders can not be exactly the same.

Maybe this can help you too:

Grammatical gender is NOT a property of the physical thing you are talking about. It is a property of the word.

German Cats And Genders

Determining gender in the German language can be tricky. Die Katze is a perfect example of that. It is feminine no matter if you refer to male or female cats. The word der Kater is a specialized term you can use when you need to specify the actual gender of the cat.

Dont forget that Kater also means a hangover as we have discussed above. As a matter of fact, the sentence Mein Kater ist aggressiv. can mean both My cat is aggressive and my hangover is aggressive. However, the context will guide you.

You can even encounter Kätzin which means a female cat as opposed to Kater. As in Sie müssen eine Kätzin mit einem gültigen Stammbaum haben. You must have a female with a valid pedigree.

He ends each video by saying German always works.

The magical, cat-charming, German word he uses is Stardenburdenhardenbart. This word, however, is completely made up! It is vaguely German-sounding Unsinn . But because the video shows the cats responding to it every time, people are starting to question things, such as Sprechen alle Katzen Deutsch?!Do all cats speak German?!

You can watch the videos here:

Of course, this is just a bit of fun. But I thought it would lead us nicely onto ways you can talk about or to cats in German.
