Forever Home Dog Rescue

We pull dogs when they are in danger of being euthanized in high kill shelters. We then arrange transport of the dogs and put them into temporary care homes. We prefer to have our dogs in homes because this allows us to know our dogs behavior and personality better. It also allows the dog to start learning what it is like to be a part of a family and what is expected of them.

*Forever Home Dog Rescue does not have a physical location for people to come see dogs. Our dogs are all in temporary care homes. Please fill out an adoption application listing the dogs you are interested in meeting and we will contact you to answer questions about the dog and set up a time for a meet and greet. Please note that we are all volunteers with full time jobs and families. We try to return messages in a timely manner but sometimes the demand for a particular dog or litter of puppies is high and it is hard to keep up with all the inquiries. Please be patient with us and feel free to contact us again if you have not heard from us within a day or two.

Animal Lifeline of Iowa is Central Iowas only special needs, no-kill animal shelter, celebrating nearly 35 years of serving the Des Moines area and all of Iowa. We rescue cats and dogs that are injured, handicapped, have a serious medical condition, abused, pregnant and nursing moms, or orphans that require bottle feeding. We rehabilitate the animals, who run a higher risk of euthanasia in a traditional shelter setting, and then adopt them into loving forever homes. Animals are not euthanized because they have been at the shelter for a certain length of time.

Dogs Available For Adoption In Des Moines

When looking at the makeup of American families today, its rare to see a home where a pet isnt part of the family. According to the most recent data from the APPA National Pet Owners Survey, 67% of householdsor around 85 million homesown a pet. Of these households, dogs and cats top the list of most popular pets, with 63.4 million and 42.7 million households owning dogs and cats, respectively.

In exploring the history of animal shelters and rescue organizations in the country, nothing proves as problematic as the lack of a centralized reporting system to collect data on these organizations. Most of the shelter statistics that are available and accepted today are estimates based on several period surveys, including the aforementioned APPA National Pet Owners Survey along with the AVMA U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook. Without a nationally codified and streamlined process for collecting, organizing, and reporting on shelter data, there has been a grave lack of transparency around the countrys shelters. That makes it difficult not only to pinpoint accurate statistics regarding sheltered animals in America but also to understand the true state of animal welfare in the country, which is the first step to improving that welfare.

Without further ado, here are adoptable dogs in your home city.

What Pets Need A License

ARL of Iowa, Des Moines police investigate after cat left in luggage

Any dog and/or cat over six months of age needs to be licensed. The fee is due January 1 each year, but we give you until March 31 before we start charging late fees.

If your pet will not turn six months old until after March 31, you wont have to pay a late fee, but you need to register them as soon as they are old enough. The same applies to those who bring home a new pet or move into Des Moines after March 31 as well. You can use an adoption form from a local rescue to provide proof of a new pet, or provide a utility bill for proof of a new address.

Why Should You Adopt

ARL: 42 cats and kittens rescued from Des Moines home

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.

  • The additional dog’s full grown weight is not more than 20 pounds as certified in writing by a veterinarian
  • The owner provides a current rabies vaccination certificate for the additional dog
  • The owner provides proof the additional dog has been spayed or neutered
  • No more than two cats reside on the property, subject to the waiver
  • The waiver certificate shall be maintained by the owner, and must be available upon request

No owner, possessor, or person in charge of a dog, cat, horse or other animal shall fail to clean up or immediately remove any excrement or droppings deposited by such dog, cat, horse or other animal on any property not owned or in control of that person.

In addition, the owner of the pet is also required to remove any excrement or droppings from their property.

Pet waste should be disposed of in garbage cans, not yard waste containers or storm drains.

Cats are not required to be leashed however, if a cat is not confined within a premise, it is required to be spayed or neutered, and properly licensed.
