Description Of Skull And Brain Morphology Of The Pekeface Persians

Extreme Quality Persian Cat’s At Pearl Cattery

Comparison of skull morphology. The 3D reconstructions of the skulls show a reduced muzzle and reduced longitudinal extension of the skull in a dollface Persian compared to the domestic shorthair . The principal skull morphology remains unchanged in the dollface Persian. The pekeface Persian shows profound aberrations compared to the other cats.

Skull changes in pekeface Persians. a dollface Persian compared to a Domestic Shorthair cat . The interorbital part of the nasal and frontal bone was indented toward the cranial cavity in pekeface Persians seen in all pekeface Persians but not in dollface Persians . In some cats the skull was asymmetric in the frontal view with diverting orbits , and a lateral deviation of the maxilla with deformation of the nasal and frontal bone was obvious . Osseous defects in the parietal and frontal bones were seen and were most pronounced in the kittens .

Dental abnormalities in pekeface Persians. Mandibular prognathism was seen in pekeface Persians as well as dental malalignments of incisive and canine teeth .

Changes in brain morphology. Midsagittal T2weighted MRimages of a domestic shorthair cat , a dollface Persian cat , and pekeface Persian cats . With reduction in the skull length a gradual push back of the conchal bones toward the cranial cavity can be seen. The frontal sinuses are more and more reduced. The frontal lobes are compressed.

Gray Matter And White Matter Volumes

Except for the GM, the residual mean square for the regression between the other variables and the body weight was significantly higher for the pekeface Persians . Gray matter was clearly related to body weight over all groups . For this variable, the slopes between groups were not significantly different allowing comparison of the groups using a common slope. After adjusting the GM to body weight, the resulting means were not significantly different between the two Persian types .

Because the statistical distribution of the CSF volume was skewed to the right, data were logarithmically transformed to get nearly normal distribution. The relation to the body weight given by slopes was inhomogeneous between the groups. Although the common slope was not significantly different from zero this was considered an indication of a possible dependency, and adjusted geometric means were calculated with individual slopes for each group, adjusted to the mean body weight of 3.0 kg. Pekeface Persians had a significantly higher adjusted geometric mean of the brain ventricle ratio .

Birman Cat Care And Grooming

The Birman beginnings are shrouded in legend and mystery. There are numerous folk tales and legends describing how the Birman obtained its unique colorings and markings that offer explanations, while the real Birman history keeps everyone guessing.

The Birman is a social, friendly family cat who can get along with kids and other pets alike. Occasionally territorial, the Birman may be less likely to let stray neighborhood cats hang around his territory. Birmans fun-loving personality makes him a blast to play with, and daily play can help prevent excessive weight gain. Expect the Birman cat to want to be involved in what youre doing.

The Birmans coat is single-length with no undercoat, which makes it easy to maintain even for a long-furred cat. Once weekly grooming usually suffices to keep the Birmans coat mat-free. Because the Birman can be prone to extra weight gain, he should be exercised weekly. The Birman is a healthy cat with a great personality,

    The Personality Of Persian Cats

Persian cats are known for being sweet, gentle animals. Dr. Carlo Siracusa, DVM, PhD, MS, is an assistant professor of clinical animal behavior and the director of small animal behavior service in the Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in Philadelphia and was once a breeder of Persian cats.

He says, The breed is very mellow and very quiet. Theyre not necessarily active, especially once theyre older. They also tend to get tired very easily.

Yody Blass, MA, a certified animal behaviorist at Companion Animal Behavior, which offers behavior solutions for dogs and cats in the Washington, D.C. area, has owned several Persian cats over the years. She agrees with Dr. Siracusa, adding, These cats can be active when they want to be, but theyre never bouncing off the walls. Theyre a good fit if you have a quieter lifestyle.

    Persian Cat Grooming Requirements

Dr. Siracusa says that he would spend upwards of an hour daily brushing his Persian cats. Persian undercoats tend to knot very easily, so you have to be sure that the knots dont turn into mats, which can be painful and need to be removed.

There are lots of brushes available for cats, but Persian cat owners should look for one thats able to get through their kittys long fur. A double-sided brush, like the JW Pet double-sided cat brush, offers two options if youre unsure which will work best for your cat.

Blass adds that keeping Persians fur pristine isnt just a matter of daily brushing. Because Persians coats are so long, sometimes their waste gets stuck when they use the litter box, Blass explains. As a result, they can get really fussy about their litter boxes and may start to eliminate in other places.

Blass says that some Persian owners get their Persian cats bellies and back legs shaved to reduce some of the issues that come with cat litter box usage, noting, Trimming these areas can help the cats feel more comfortable. It is recommended to have a professional groomer trim or shave your Persian cats fur instead of doing it at home.

Of course, standard grooming also applies to Persian cats, and owners should be equipped to do a quick nail clip if necessary.

A Word Of Caution About Cat Mills

Though puppy mills get a lot of attention, kitten mills are prevalent. These facilities breed and raise kittens in high volumes, often in horrendous conditions. Many cats that come from mills suffer abuse, neglect, and long-lasting health problems. A mills focus is to produce and sell as many kittens as possible, so no attention is paid to their emotional and physical needs, their potential homes, or ongoing care.

Many cat mill kittens are sold online or in pet stores, but some pose as reputable breeders. It can be difficult to tell if a breeder is legitimate or a pet mill, but here are some tips:

    • Reputable breeders care about the owners and their kittens wellbeing, often asking possible buyers to sign contracts with restrictions on breeding rights, spaying and neutering, and declawing.
    • Reputable breeders include veterinary exam records and health guarantees for their cats and kittens. Some may also provide a spay or neuter, first vaccinations, and deworming.
    • Reputable breeders encourage potential owners to visit the facility to meet the parents and kittens.

While there may be exceptions, like the one on this list, reputable breeders will want potential owners to pick up their kitten in person. Depending on the rest of the conditions, a breeder willing to ship a kitten may be breeding in high volume and looking to unload kittens as quickly as possible.

Phenotyping Of Persian Cats To Pekeface Or Dollface Morphology

Peke and dollface Persians are not clearly defined and may not represent two distinct morphologic types. However, we adopt these colloquial terms to define two groups of Persians either with high or low grades of brachycephaly. The description of the CFA standards for a Persian demands the nose to be aligned with the eyes in a lateral view. This feature was used to classify the Persians according to their brachycephaly grade. Based on CT datasets, 3D head models were created witha threshold tool that enabled visualization and selection of the skin surface . A transversal orthoslice plane was aligned on the rostral end of the eyeglobes. If the tip of the nose was on or caudal to that plane, the cat was assigned to the pekeface group. If the tip of the nose was rostral to that line, the cat was classified as a dollface Persian.

Classification of general head morphology of the studied cats. Classification was based on 3D head models semiautomatically created from the CT datasets with a threshold tool that enabled visualization and selection of the skin surface. An orthoslice plane was aligned on the rostral end of the eyeball. If the tip of the nose was rostral to that plane, the cat was assigned to the pekeface group. If the tip of the nose was on or caudal to that line, the cat was classified as a dollface Persian.
