My Cat Threw Up And Is Acting Weird

Why Is My Cat Throwing Up After Being Outside

Why is my CAT Acting WEIRD? ð?± Causes and What to Do

If your cat is throwing up after being outside, its probably eaten bad food, drank dirty water, or licked something toxic. Cats are extremely curious and extremely responsive hunters. Even if a feline has no intention of eating a bug, rodent, or bird, it may still catch it. If this creature then emits some kind of toxin or is carrying a disease, it may get into your cats mouth. Likewise, cats may scavenge on leftovers. Your cat may have:

  • Snacked in a trash can
  • Found a decaying carcass
  • Lapped up puddle water

If any of this contained bacteria or toxic chemicals, your cats body will respond by ejecting the contamination. Vomiting will be messy and sometimes painful, but its the fastest way to get rid of the harmful substance the cat ate. If it continues for several hours, or the cat shows other symptoms, contact your vet.

Thankfully, cats vomit for less dangerous reasons, too. These include:

Interaction With Feral Cats

When indoor cats are allowed to go outside, they are likely to mingle and interact with stray or feral cats. Stray cats tend to be elusive, and they like to keep to themselves.

If your cat stays out for too long, it might pick up some of the habits of these feral cats. When your cat does come home, it will then appear to act weird or out of character.

When Does A Cat Vomiting Need Veterinary Attention

Most cat owners have experienced the unpleasant sensation of cat sick between the toes on a nighttime bathroom trip, or as a nice addition to your favourite rug. Vomiting is the active expulsion of stomach contents, which in cats can be violent, and may have many causes. It needs to be differentiated from regurgitation: where food is brought up with minimal effort from the oesophagus before ever reaching the stomach.

You may see warnings signs such as drooling, swallowing, licking their lips more, or hiding away. Short-term vomiting consisting of one or two episodes, or lasting less than 24 hours, in an otherwise healthy cat is usually nothing to worry about.

Other Reasons Your Cat Acts Weird After Flea Treatment

Cat Throwing Up Food But Acting Normal in 2021

While poisoning is the most worrying reason your cat might act weird after flea treatment, it is not the only one. If your flea already has a flea infestation, then they might be acting irritable or annoyed because of the fleas. It might take a little time for the treatment to become effective.

Another reason your cat might be acting weird is that you have had to take them to the veterinarian. Even the most gentle vet might have to restrain a cat which is already nervous due to being taken out of their home. This anxiety might not stop after they get home. They will show signs of irritation which may include vocalizations and even slight aggression. However, these behaviors should stop eventually once they have calmed down.

This is why it is very important to know the symptoms of flea treatment poisoning in cats. You will need to determine the difference between being annoyed and toxic shock from poisoning.

My Cat Is Weird After Vaccination

When our cat is acting weird, we need to consider the general context. Sometimes there are specific instances which can lead to weird behaviors in your cat. One example we highlight is when a cat acts weird after getting a shot. Whether it is for rabies, Feline Calicivirus or any other type of vaccination, it is possible your cat will behave strangely for the 24 hours after receiving the shot.

Altered behavior after vaccination is not very frequent, but it is possible and shouldn’t cause any concern. The reason for it is likely a physical response to the vaccination itself, as well as an emotional response to being taken to the clinic and being injected.

In general, the cat may seem a little strange, but they should return to normal within 24 hours. If they continue acting weird after this time, you will need to take them to the veterinarian to ensure there is no physiological problem. My Cat Is Acting Weird And Doesn’t Want To Play

After reviewing the most common reasons why our cat is acting weird, one other thing we need to take into account is their stage of life. As with humans, cats will change their habits during their lifetime. For example, after kittens open their eyes and begin to walk, they will start to play energetically. However, after some time, this behavior will reduce.

Reduction of play activity is particularly noticeable in senior cats. This is in part due to the consequences of aging. The cat’s joints and bones will become weakened, they will have less energy and they are more susceptible to degenerative diseases. For this reason, regular checkups every 6 to 12 months is recommended for all cats over the age of 6 years. To help you know what else to look out for, you can look at our article on the main 5 signs of old age in cats.

Another reason your cat may stop being interested in interaction is due to depression. If they are unhappy, they may lose their motivation. The reasons your cat is depressed are varied and can be difficult to determine. They may also be similar to the reasons your cat is stressed as not all cats will respond to the same stimuli in the same way. Discussing treatment options with your veterinarian is the best course of action.

Treatment Of Vomiting With Bile In Cats

On some occasions, vomiting with bile in your cat will subside on its own. In cases where the condition is ongoing, there will be various courses of treatment depending on the underlying cause. In the event of food causes, your vet may prescribe an approved cat food formula for animals with inflamed stomachs or food sensitivities. They may also alter the amount or frequency of your cats meals.

If food or diet alterations dont alleviate your pets symptoms, the veterinarian may prescribe certain drugs such as antibiotics for infections or digestion affecting drugs to increase the ability of your pet to digest food or to reduce the amount of bile in the digestive system. Probiotics may also be recommended to help restore the levels of good bacteria in your cats digestive system.

Even in indoor environments, parasites are a concern for your cat. If your cat is an outdoor cat, then the risk is even greater. An infestation can occur via many methods. If your cat ingests something they shouldn’t, then eggs or larvae of parasites can pass into the gastrointestinal system. Interaction with feces or any close contact with an affected individual can be vectors for infestation. Some of the types of parasite known to infest cats include:

Many of these are gastrointestinal parasites which make their way into the digestive system and leach nutrients. The results of an infestation vary with some causing serious discomfort and others being almost asymptomatic. Fleas are an external parasite and pass on to the feline host by attaching themselves to their coat. This occurs either by an adult flea jumping on to the coat of the cat from another animal or person, or by the larvae developing in the environment and attaching themselves to the cat.

There are many other possible diseases which can be caused by flea infestation. A report from 2017 even claims that the prevalence of flea-borne diseases has been greatly underestimated by health practitioners and agencies. The same report reveals some of these diseases which include:

A Cat In Heat Will Display A Dramatic Increase In Affectionate Behavior

If you thought your cat was a lovebug before, now shes probably glued to you, constantly demanding your attention, weaving in and out of your legs, rubbing against you, shaking her pelvis, and rolling on the floor. What Could Be The Reason For The Vomiting

Occasional vomiting may be caused by:

    Furballs

Cats often ingest hair while grooming. If it forms into clumps it may irritate the stomach, eventually being vomited up. If your cat vomits hairballs frequently your vet may suggest treatments or diets to reduce hair build-up and grooming your cat regularly to reduce the volume of hair ingested.

    Eating too rapidly

Cats that gobble food too quickly may regurgitate. If youve got multiple cats make sure you have separate feeding bowls in separate locations to reduce competition. Try serving dry food in a used egg carton, or putting kibble in plastic bottles with holes that dispense the food as it rolls. These puzzle feeders slow eating, create mental challenge, combat boredom and increase exercise which combats weight gain.

    Eating too much at once

Cats naturally eat small amounts and often. While not always practical, specialists suggest 5 small meals a day. Dry kibble absorbs fluid in the stomach and swells which may cause vomiting, especially in older cats.

    Eating spoilt food or hunting

Like us, they can be susceptible to the bacteria or spoiled food or something theyve caught. This may result in irritation of the stomach.

Why Is My Cat Sniffing At Everything After Being Outside

Top 10 cats being sick – cats throw up

Cats use their sense of smell to detect prey, mark their territories, and learn about their environments. Your cat might sniff at everything after being outside to distinguish between the indoor and outdoor environments.

For example, your kitty may find that its scratching post smells very different from the tree outside, even if they both had the same purpose. To figure out why, and in what ways, your cat will sniff a little closer.

Cats In Heat Make A Come Hither Pose With Their Butts In The Air

If you stroke your cats back while shes in heat, shell raise her hips to stick her butt in the air, twitch her tail to the side, and start treading with her hind feet.

These last three signs indicate that your cat is in full-on estrus or heat and extremely receptive to being mated. She may become an escape artist, doing whatever she can to scratch her hormonal itch. Estrus lasts four to six days.

After your cat has been through the week to 10 days of proestrus and estrus, more commonly known as heat, shell go into the third stage, known as interestrus. During this stage, shell refuse to mate and aggressively attack any tomcat that gets in her way. If she didnt mate during the heat cycle, shell remain in this interestrus stage for one to two weeks, and the whole process will start all over again.

If your cat is older than about five months and begins showing these signs, get her to the vet for her spay as soon as you can. Cats will continue to go in and out of heat until they get pregnant or get spayed.

Unspayed cats have a much higher risk of developing mammary and uterine cancer, as well as polycystic ovaries, due to constantly fluctuating hormone levels. Spaying also eliminates the risk of a potentially fatal uterine infection called pyometra . Your cats behavior will improve and you wont have boy cats coming over to visit at all hours of the day and night.

Avoid giving your cat very salty, spicy or fatty foods, as this may increase the risk of an upset stomach. In order to reduce the risk of problems associated with dietary changes, we recommend introducing new food gradually you can try introducing new food over at least seven days and monitor for any intestinal disturbances. If your cat is sensitive to stress, or a course of antibiotics has been prescribed, then you can feed a probiotic supplement to help reduce the risk of intestinal disturbances. During periods of stress, it may also be helpful to use a soothing pheromone spray or plug-in adapter .

It may be useful to keep probiotics and electrolyte supplements at home, together with some chicken or white fish in the freezer, in case of an emergency. If you know that your cat catches mice or birds then you can send in a stool sample for analysis periodically to see if they need worming.
