Can You Touch A 2 Week Old Kitten

How I Bottle Feed My 1 Week Old Kitten!

If you are taking care of an orphaned kitten, of course you can hold them! The biggest thing to keep in mind when touching and holding them is to keep them warm.

With our kitten, we would wear a sweatshirt backwards and swaddle her in the hood of the sweatshirt. This kept her warm and nestled like should would be if she was cuddling with her mother.

Im sure there are many other ways to keep kittens warm while holding them.

But it also allowed us to be partially hands free. We would usually only have to use one hand to support her while she was sleeping and had the extra hand to attempt to be productive.

Caring For 2 Week Old Kitten: What To Provide

With both of the aforementioned facts, it is clear that the first thing you must focus on in their initial developing stage is nutrition and warmth. Place the kitten in a cardboard box that has been lined up with a clean cloth or towel. Not only does this clean cloth provide them with warmth, it also adequately contains their waste as they constantly soil the box.

Unless you are living in the tropical territory, you must also provide them with a heating pad. Wrap the heating pad with clean towels and place the kitten on it. Set it at its lowest setting.

If you are living in the tropics, a heating pad may not be needed and in the event that the cat is feeling cold, you may warm a water bottle until it reaches 100-degrees and wrap it in a towel before you place it in the box with them.

Place the box in a safe location. If you already have a cat in the house when you bring back the kitten, be sure to place the box away from the cats reach as they may not take the kittens presence very well.

Feeding An Orphaned Kitten

But if you have a kitten without a mother, you need to provide food thats formulated for kitten health. Whether your orphaned kitten is a newborn or one that’s a few weeks old, you should bottle feed them. Bottle-feeding a kitten isnt difficult, but it does take a little know-how to do it properly. These tips for how to bottle feed a kitten can help.

When Can Kittens Eat Dry Food & Wet Food

As kittens begin to wean, they can start to nibble solid foods. Starting with wet kitten food or moistened dry kibble will help through the transition.

Start by combining one part of warm water and three parts of dry or wet kitten food . Over the next two weeks, gradually decrease the amount of water and increase the amount of food.

Once your kitten is fully weaned and eating solids, choose whichever option is recommended by your veterinarian and works best for your situation.

Above all else, make sure the wet or dry food you choose is specifically formulated for kittens.

What To Feed Kittens Without Mother ( Helpful Guide To Feeding

Lets talk about what to feed kittens 2 weeks old. This is probably one of the most important things to understand when caring for an orphaned kitten and what a lot of people tend to have issues on.

You will probably have guessed that a newborn kitten will need to be bottle-fed. And you are correct.

Kittens need to be bottle-fed until anywhere from 6-8 weeks. You do not want to try to ween the kittens off the bottle before they are ready.

When will they be ready? Well definitely not at the two-week mark, but I will start to mention that in the other weeks of care.

What To Feed Kittens 4 To 6 Weeks Of Age Weaning Begins

Weaning is the gradual transition from a diet of only mothers milk or an appropriate milk replacer to solid foods. For kittens, this generally begins around 3 to 4 weeks of age.

Start by offering a gruel made from high-quality canned kitten food mixed with warm water several times a day. Also put out a small bowl of water. For large litters, set up several feeding stations to ensure that everyone has access to what they need.

Bottle-fed kittens will let you know that they are ready to try solid food when they start chewing on the nipples while they nurse. Initially, continue to offer a bottle every 6 to 8 hours while food is freely available, but once the kittens are eating canned food well and drinking water from a bowl, you can stop the bottle feedings.

Other Kitten Weaning Tips

When you are weaning a kitten onto solid food, its important to use a food formulated specifically for kittens. These formulas have the higher levels of calories, protein and calcium that growing kittens need. If you are caring for a mother cat and her litter, its okay for the mom cat to eat the same kitten food while shes nursing.

Weaning kittens must be kept warm. Build a nest by lining a high sided box or pet carrier with towels. Benson also recommends adding a layer of diapers above the towels, cutting the leg holes to make them lie flat. Theyre going to get messy, he says, and this makes clean-up much easier. Place a heating pad or hot water bottle under the towels on one half of the box. This gives the kittens plenty of heat, but also a place to cool off if they are too hot.

Kitten weaning is a natural process they may just need a little help from you. The key: a little patience and a lot of love.

Your kitten should be eating a good quality kitten food or a food labeled for all feline life stages. Even as you introduce her to other foods, this should be her primary food as too many changes can cause digestive upsets. Feel free to change flavors of food but remain within the same brand to maintain some consistency.

Using A Commercial Kitten Milk Replacer

If a mother cat is unable to feed her little ones, the kittens will need human help to get the nutrients they need. To feed a kitten, skip the standard milk in your fridge! This will cause tummy upset and will not give the kittens what they need to survive. You’ll need to purchase a commercial kitten milk replacement to get them the special nutrients they need. This product is available at local pet stores or at your veterinarians office. Never use cows milk or any other dairy alternative. Kitten milk replacer is formulated to provide the same nutrition that a mother cats milk offers, and it comes in two forms: dry or canned.

Get A Bottle And Nipple

You can purchase a bottle at any pet supply store or feed store, or online. Be aware that the nipple that comes on the bottle is not cut you will need to cut a hole in it yourself. The hole should be big enough that if you hold it upside down, formula can slowly drop out of it — but not so big that it flows out freely. Pictured here are Kitten Lady’s preferred nipples for kittens, available by PetAg, Pet Nurser, and Miracle Nipple.

The kittens appear to be abandoned, what can you do to help?

Once you remove the babies, you must keep them at an appropriate body temperature. Using a box with clean, soft towels, and warming bottles make a nest and place the kittens in the box. Keep them away from drafts and out of humidity. They need a room that stays close to 90 degrees for the first two weeks of age, then the temperature can be lowered to 80 degrees. Unweaned kittens need round-the-clock care and monitoring.

The kittens will need to be bottle fed with milk replacer every 2-3 hours and kept warm and dry.

  • 1 4 weeks old: will need to be bottle-fed kitten formula.
  • 5 weeks and older: can be offered canned food for KITTENS ONLY but they may still need to be bottle-fed. Canned food must be creamy texture with no chunky food or big pieces. Please try to find the best quality canned kitten food from the pet store.
  • If you, a neighbor, friend, or relative are able to take on this responsibility, you can give these abandoned kittens a shot at life! If your schedule does not allow for it, there may be resources in the community to help. Be aware that most local shelters do not have the staff to feed kittens around the clock and mortality rates in these kittens are very high.

What To Do First: Making Your Kittens Warm And Comfortable

If the mother is not there to do it, it is important that you keep newborn kittens warm, as they are not yet able to regulate their own body temperatures and can easily go into hypothermia. To ensure your kittens are warm enough, keep them in a quiet room, out of the way of any drafts. Keep the room temperature at around 25°C. You can make them a cosy bed from a cardboard box lined with blankets or purchase a ready-made kitten bed. You can use an infrared light or hot water bottle securely wrapped in fabric to heat their bed. But make sure it is not in direct contact with kittens.

Reminder: if your kittens eyes are still closed or partially opened, this stage is even more vital. Once warmed up, take them immediately to the vet.

Feeding A Kitten Over 8 Weeks Of Age

2 week old KITTEN CARE | Foster kittens

Once a kitten has surpassed eight weeks of age, they should be fed twice a day with normal kitten food. Solid food should not be an issue for kittens of this age but they may still try to nurse on occasion. Between eight and ten weeks of age, a kitten should be fully weaned and preparing to leave its mother if you plan to find the kitten a new home. The first vaccinations are typically administered at about eight weeks of age, so when the kittens have a vet visit, you can be sure they have been growing appropriately.

Just Before You Feed A Stray Kitten

Its important that you determine the age of a stray cat before feeding it.

Besides making sure that its rapidly growing and developing body will be properly nourished, you should also see to it that the stray kitten wont experience an upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea due to giving it food thats not appropriate for it.

Reasons Your Kitten May Not Be Eating

If your new kitten is not eating well or has diarrhea, call your vet and schedule another checkup.

Sometimes intestinal parasites can cause gastrointestinal upset in kittens. It is common for kittens to come home already infected with parasites. They can get some parasites through the placenta before birth as well as in the milk from the mother cat.

Some of these parasites can also be transmitted to people, so good hygiene and preventive care are important.

Weeks Two And Three Feeding Schedules

Bottle Babies

A 2 to 3-week old kitten will still need to be fed every 2-3 hours and it should consume at least 1/2 tablespoon of formula or milk during each meal. If a kitten is nursing from its mother, you’ll have to depend on how much the kitten weighs to know whether or not it is consuming enough food. Between days 8 through 18, its weight should increase to about 10 oz. and it will begin to crawl around shortly after its eyes open.

By the end of week 3, a kitten will be able to stand up and will have begun to interact with its littermates. Playing, ear-biting, wrestling, and exploring behaviors will begin and are important parts of socialization.
