Cats have an amazing system for conserving water. Their kidneys are able to keep the moisture needed by the body even when drinking water is scarce. Thats why cats have a low thirst level compared with some other animals.

Constipation in cats is caused directly or indirectly by dehydration. The first order of business to get things moving is to rehydrate your cat. In mild cases, feeding her canned cat food with a side of chicken broth may be enough to resolve the problem.

How To Make A Cat Poop When Constipated

First, understand you could be getting into dangerous territory attempting to treat a bad case of constipation at home. I strongly urge you to get help from your veterinarian if your pet hasnt passed stool in 36 or more hours.

For those who are still eating and acting normal but havent pooped in 12-24 hours, you can try some simple home remedies safely.

Can You Prevent Cat Constipation

Prevent your cat from future constipation complications by monitoring their water. Provide them with clean water even better if its moving. A water fountain can encourage drinking, preventing future problems like constipation. If your cat is comfortable with the traditional water bowl, make sure youre changing their water daily to ensure its fresh and free of parasites!

If you are feeding your cat wet food, make sure youre checking on its shelf life. Your cat will thrive best with fresh, healthy food. Even dry food can provide them the right nutrients if you choose a brand that has all of the protein and vitamins they need.

Always keep an eye on your cats litterbox as well. Its important to make sure they are regularly passing bowel movements. Its also important to stay on top of litterbox cleanliness. A fresh litterbox can encourage cats more than a dirty one, which they may avoid even if they do have to go.

When To Go To The Vet For Cat Constipation

If your cat has been constipated for more than a full day, its time to make a vet appointment. Its especially concerning if your cat is crying when trying to use the litterbox or if you notice blood in their stool.

Just like dealing with a cat that has diarrhea, this is not something you want to wait out. A delay could spell health complications for your kitty. Vets will be able to determine the cause of a cats constipation problems, offering treatment plans, medication, and lifestyle changes that will keep your cat healthy and happy.

One way to tell if a kitten is constipated is to observe the litter box habits. If the kitten is not using the litter box frequently, then it is likely that the kitten is constipated.

If the kitten is using the litter box regularly but is not passing any fecal material, then the kitten may have a problem with its bowels, but is not constipated. If the kitten is passing fecal material but is not using the litter box, then the kitten may have a problem with its elimination and should be evaluated by a veterinarian.

Why Do Cats Get Constipated

Cats are finicky eaters. If your cat starts eating less it may lead to constipation. Their diet may also be too low in fiber. Its important to pick outquality cat food with appropriate ingredients.

Cats often become constipated when they are dehydrated. So, you may also want to consider wet food. While cats are picky when it comes to food, many people arent aware that cats are even more particular when it comes to water.

Often, cats will not drink enough because theyre not interested in the water in their bowl. They prefer moving water, which leads many cat owners to try out water fountains. Another alternative is canned food since its made up of over 70% water.

If your cat has not passed faeces for 48 hours, he will need to be checked by your vet. Your vet will discuss your cats signs with you and perform a physical examination. Further tests such as x-rays, ultrasound, blood and urine tests may be needed.

If dietary adjustments have not worked, your vet may give your cat an enema. DO NOT use over-the-counter enema solutions designed for humans. Some of them contain enough potassium to kill a cat. Your cat may also be given fluids . In some severe cases, your cat may need to be sedated to have the faeces manually removed.

Constipation can be prevented in many cases by providing adequate fibre and water to keep your cat regular.

Another natural remedy is olive oil. Cat owners can add a teaspoon of olive oil to their kittys food on a daily basis for up to one week. Olive oil helps with intestinal muscle contractions and softens feces, which can be beneficial to a cat with constipation. Just make sure your cat can digest it properly.

My Cat Is Constipatedwhat Should I Do

Cats who are straining to go to the bathroom or arent going at all are likely constipated. This can be caused by lots of factors, such as:

  • Too little fiber in the diet
  • Not drinking enough water
  • Over-grooming, which can lead to hair blocking the digestive tract
  • An obstruction caused by a swallowed object
  • A tumor or other blockage in the intestines
  • An illness, such as diabetes

If your cat is constipated, give your vet a call for advice, especially if you suspect some sort of blockage or illness. Your cat may need surgery to remove the obstruction or treatment for the specific ailment. To help alleviate constipation, your vet may prescribe a stool softener, laxative, or other medication. Constipation can also be helped by:

  • Feeding your cat a high fiber diet
  • Trying to coax more water intake
  • Encouraging more exercise

Adding fiber-rich fruits and veggies to your cats diet can be useful as well. Check out our Infographic of pet-safe fruits and veggies for ideas.

What Should I Do If My Cat Is Pooping Frequently

If your cat is pooping frequently, its likely a sign of diarrhea. Cat diarrhea is common among cats who have recently had a diet change or suffer from food allergies. Is It Normal For A Cat Not To Pee After Surgery

If you ask a cat owner, Is it normal for a cat not to pee after surgery?you may get a variety of answers.

Some cats may seem fine with not urinating or even showing interest in relieving themselves as soon as they can after a vet has performed a simple procedure, but if they dont make a show of either urinating or not urinating after surgery, that may be a problem.

To answer the question, proper diagnosis must be made. I

f your cat is going through a period of constipation and no obvious other problems are present, chances are good that your cats condition is not quite as serious as it first appears.

Cat owners have to take care of their feline friends health, but sometimes it seems like people think of their cats as just another animal to be plopped in front of the television.

It is important to spend time with them and give them attention. When a cat exhibits normal behavior after a cataract operation, it is usually due to an underlying condition and it is often overlooked.

Cataract surgery can be a risky procedure. The cat may appear fine after the cataract operation but this is not always the case.

A cat that appears fine after surgery may not be fine after a couple of days of recovery from the surgery.

In the event that your cat doesnt seem to make a fuss about having a cataract operation, chances are good that it will be fine after all.

Depending on your cats age and health, the procedure could be fairly simple.

Vet Treatment For Constipation In Cats

Constipation is common in cats but can indicate serious disease, so it should be discussed with your vet.

Constipation must be treated as soon as possible to reduce the risk of permanent damage due to prolonged distension of the colon. Effective treatment involves identifying and correcting the underlying disorder , removing the impacted feces, and preventing recurrences.

For immediate relief of constipation, your veterinarian can give your cat fluids and/or an enema. Administering an enema to a cat is a veterinary job and should not be attempted at home, says Dr. Bales. Some types of enemas designed for people are actually very toxic to cats.

Vets can also prescribe medications or recommend over-the-counter solutions to help you manage the symptoms of your cats constipation.

More importantly, your vet can help identify the underlying issue thats causing the constipation so it can be treated, rather than just trying to manage the symptoms.

Some cats with long-term constipation or obstipation may have megacolon, an enlarged intestine caused by a defect in the muscle strength of the colon. Cats with chronic constipation or megacolon that have been unresponsive to medical treatment may respond to removal of the affected section of the large intestine.

Heres a list of things you can do at home to help relieve your cats constipation.

What Is The Triangle Method To Get A Kitten To Poop

The triangle method is a litter-box training technique used to get a kitten to develop a regular fiber-optic pattern in defecation. The kitten is placed in a cloth or paper triangle with its back to the litter-box and the front toward the person who is training it.

The kitten is then made to perform a toileting action, such as scratching or pawing at the litter-box, in the center of the triangle. This action is repeated over time until the kitten begins to use the litter-box consistently.

Can Cat Poop Be Dangerous

Handling cat poop may have an eww factor, but it isnt typically dangerous. That said, there is a concern that cat poop can contain a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii, which causes Toxoplasmosis. You can also get Toxoplasmosis from eating raw or undercooked meat. Toxoplasmosis isnt a big deal for most people who either wont get sick or show only mild flu-like symptoms. However, it is of particular concern to pregnant women who can pass the parasites along to the unborn child and cause birth defects or even fetal death.

While this sounds scary, its good to know that contracting these parasites from the litter box is not a common occurrence. Cats infected with the parasite only excrete it for a short amount of time, and the parasites arent infective for at least 48 hours. That means if youre scooping out the litter box daily, you greatly reduce the risk of infection.

Just to be safe, pregnant women should hand over litter box duties until the baby is born. If thats not possible, scoop and clean the box wearing rubber gloves and thoroughly wash your hands after youre done. Keeping your cat insidewhich is recommended by our strategic partner The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® for all catscan also help prevent them from contracting this parasite.

Why Is My Cat Pooping Outside Of The Box

Pooping outside of the box can be your cats way of telling you something like I dont like it when you leave me home alone all day, or Im upset that theres a new pet in the house. Your cat could also be making a statement about the litter box itself, such as:

Going outside of the box can also point to a health issue, so be sure to talk to your vet if the situation continues.

Why Is My Cat Not Pooping But Acting Normal

To understand why your cat isnt pooping, we first need to understand the normal physiological processes for the formation of healthy stools.

This process is as follows:

  • Your cat chews and swallows the food. It passes down the esophagus and into the stomach.
  • In the stomach, enzymes start to break down and digest the food into smaller pieces that the body can later absorb.
  • This broken-down food leaves the stomach and enters the small intestine where more enzymes continue to break down the food. Simultaneously, the nutrients are taken up by the small intestine and enter the bloodstream.
  • The remaining indigestible food then passes to the large intestine, at which point water is absorbed from the mixture to form stools.
  • This dried waste collects at the rectum, at which point your cat poops it out.
  • If your cat hasnt pooped for several days, it is because too much water is removed from step four of this process. This causes any stools that do form to be much drier and harder than usual. As a result, it is much more painful for your cat to pass these stools out of the body. This leads to a reluctance in pooping and constipation.

    Symptoms Of Constipation In Cats

Constipation is characterized by infrequent stools or stools that are difficult to pass. Most cats will poop about every 24-36 hours. If your cat is pooping less frequently and having some difficulty, she may be constipated.

While there is some normal variation, if its been more than 48-72 hours without a bowel movement, you should contact your vet.

The main signs of constipation in cats are:

    • Dry, hard stools

Normally, the poop is a rich brown color and should look well-formed. A healthy stool has enough moisture that litter will stick to it, says Dr. Liz Bales, VMD. Cats with constipation may have very dry, hard stools. You may find these stools outside the litter box, because the discomfort of trying to pass stool can cause cats to leave the litter box before theyre actually finished.

    • Crying or straining in the litter box, or avoiding it altogether

Other signs of discomfort can be vocalizing or straining when using the litter box or going in and out multiple times before using it. Your cat may strain but not be able to poop at all. Showing discomfort in the litter box can also be a sign of serious urinary tract issues, so you should contact a vet if you see these signs.

Constipation is really a symptom of other issues, so you may also see signs of the underlying cause. These may include:

    • Walking stiffly

If youre seeing any of these symptoms, with or without constipation, you should discuss them with your cats vet.
