Home Remedies For Flea Control In Cats

Cat Flea Treatment (10 Natural Ways!)

Fleas are an annoying parasite that infest our cats, our homes, our yards and sometimes even ourselves. Fleas multiply quickly and can take over in no time. Fleas carry disease, cause skin irritation and itching and for cats with allergies can cause hair loss, rashes, swelling, or more severe symptoms. If your cat suffers from fleas, you can purchase commercial treatments in stores, or you can go the natural route and take care of the fleas with simple home remedies.

Natural Remedies For Cat Fleas

Posted August 21, 2014byThe Cats Inn

When it comes to pets fleas are a troublesome enemy. Though we do our best to protect our cats from coming into contact with fleas sometimes our efforts fall short and we must find the best way to remedy the situation.

Many cat owners dread putting their pets through harsh and often toxic, chemical treatments. But fleas can be a persistent bunch and very difficult to get rid of.

What other options are available for cat owners who refuse to use chemicals, and particularly, for owners of older cats who may not be able to tolerate them?

Protect Carpets Flooring Bedding And Furniture Against Fleas

Vacuuming and washing hard-surfaced floors often daily during the height of flea season is the least toxic way to control fleas. This will remove most of the adults, and some eggs and larvae. Keep in mind the larvae don’t like light, so vacuum under furniture and around baseboards anywhere near your pet’s favorite places to hang out. Remember to vacuum some natural flea powder into the vacuum bag to kill any fleas in the bag, or immediately remove the bag and discard it in a sealed plastic bag after use. Otherwise, they will just jump out of the bag and back into your home.

Vacuuming alone can’t control severe infestations, and not everyone has the time to clean all the floors daily. That’s when we recommend using one or more of the natural powders available for ridding your home of fleas. The least toxic products are calcium carbonate, diatomaceous earth and boric acid products, which work by desiccating the fleas, larvae, pupae, and eggs, which kills them.

With all flea powder products, follow package directions carefully. Natural flea control powders are drying agents, and their dust can irritate nasal passages and lungs if inhaled directly. Avoid overzealous shaking of the container while spreading the powder onto the floor so you don’t create clouds of dust. If you have any questions about the application process with any of our products, please call or email and we will be happy to help.

Make/buy An Essential Oil Flea Collar

You could make a natural flea collar from a cotton bandana or collar dosed up with essential oils that are known to have a repelling effect on fleas. A word of warning though, essential oils for fleas on cats have to be handled correctly.

The main essential oils for cats fleas are cedar, lavender, geranium, eucalyptus and citrus based oils. Of course, as we highlighted, some of these oils are dangerous to cats if ingested in sufficient doses but we are not recommending you douse your cat in these essential oils.

Ideally, you want to use a low concentration oil dropped onto a cotton collar avoid contact on the skin or putting the oil anywhere near kittys mouth.

If you want to be properly safe about this and love the idea of a natural flea collar then dont mess with oils simply buy one from a reputable brand. There are plenty online. They all tend to use the same natural oils but are able to boast of 6-8 month protection.

Beware though, these ingredients might be natural but they can be harmful often cats can have an allergic reaction if the ingredients are in the wrong doses for them. The reaction usually takes the form of skin irritation around the collar area that clears after stopping use.

Still, a collar in conjunction with bathing, shampooing and combing should have them fleas on the run!

What Will Kill Fleas Instantly
