Faqs About Pet Adoption

Adopting a Maine Coon Kitten | What to Expect & Prepare for

Ive found a pet Im interested in. Now what?

Congratulations! Your next step is to contact the organization listed on the pets page. Click learn more about me to go to Adopt-a-Pet.com for additional information on the shelter or rescue and its adoption process.

What is the difference between a shelter and a rescue group?

The biggest difference is that most shelters keep their available pets in a single facility, while most rescue groups keep theirs in the homes of volunteers.

Also, shelters usually have paid staff as well as volunteers, while rescue groups are typically volunteer-run efforts.

The pet Im interested in is at a shelter what will it be like when I go to see her?

Shelters come in all varieties. Some are modern and beautiful, while others are old-fashioned. Some are run by private charities and others are government facilities and may be what youd call no-frills.

After youve selected a pet who seems right for you, most private shelters will let you visit with him or her in their own dog apartments or kitty condos, or will invite you to spend time with the pet in a special room or fenced outdoor area set aside for pets and adopters to get acquainted.

If you are interested in a dog and already have a dog at home, many private shelters will require you to bring in your resident dog to meet the prospective new family member. This is to make sure there will be no future dog-to-dog conflicts.

What are the pros and cons of adopting from a rescue group?

S To Follow When Adopting A Maine Coon Kitten Or Cat

Bringing home a cat or kitten is a process that should be taken carefully to ensure your cat is safe and healthy every step of the way.

Here are the steps you should follow when bringing home a cat.

  • Make Sure Youre Ready: Before deciding to adopt a cat, its important that all of your household members are also okay with a cat living in the home. Make sure you are financially and emotionally prepared for a cat. Its important to determine early on who will be most responsible for the cats care and wellbeing, as well.
  • Find A Reputable Shelter: While its possible to find Maine Coons available for adoption on sites like Craigslist, these are often the result of backyard breeders looking to make a quick buck. Do lots of research into potential shelters or people before choosing a place that you feel is safe.
  • Ask Questions: Its especially important to ask questions about your new cat or kitten. If youre adopting from someone online, ask about vaccinations, deworming, and other medical history questions. If youre adopting from a shelter, ask about their policies for veterinary care.
  • Choose A Cat: When youre sure youve found a rescue or person who is reputable and safe, its time to choose a cat! It can sometimes take a while before a Maine Coon becomes available, so its best to stay sharp in case someone sends in an adoption application before you!

Coat Color And Grooming

A Maine Coon is a big, rugged cat with a smooth, shaggy coat who looks as if they could put in a full day mousing on a farm in all weather conditions. Indeed, they were built for just such work in the harsh Maine climate, and their breed standard reflects their heritage, calling for a medium-size to large cat with a well-proportioned body that is muscular and broad-chested. A Maine Coon has substantial, medium-length legs and large, round paws, well tufted with fur, to serve as snowshoes during winter.

A heavy coat is shorter on the shoulders, longer on the stomach and britches , with a ruff in front and a long, furry tail waving a greeting. A medium-width head is slightly longer than it is wide and has a squarish muzzle. Large, well-tufted ears are wide at the base, tapering to a point, and large, expressive eyes are green, gold, greenish-gold or copper. White or bi-colored Maine Coons may have blue or odd eyes.

The brown tabby pattern is so common in this breed that many people dont know Maine Coons can come in any other colors or patterns. They might be surprised to learn that Maine Coons are found in solid colors that include black, red or white, all tabby colors and patterns, bi-color such as blue and white or red and white, and patterns such as tortoiseshell and calico.

Where Can I Find Maine Coon Kittens For Free

Are you looking for a Maine Coon kitten, but dont want to pay the price of a breeder?

Here are some potential options for finding free Maine Coon kittens.

  • Facebook: Facebook is a great site for finding kittens! Oftentimes people will end up with unwanted litter, and instead of sending the kittens to a shelter, theyll give them away for free. Certain regions will even have whole Facebook groups dedicated to pet adoption.
  • Craigslist: While it is possible to find free kittens on Craigslist, it often isnt the best option. Craigslist is full of kitten mills and backyard breeders who often charge high prices for unregistered kittens in poor health. If youre having trouble finding kittens available elsewhere, however, its one option to consider.
  • Your Local Community: Stay involved in your community to find any kittens going up for adoption. Keep an eye out for local ads in your newspaper or posted around town. You can even send out an ad yourself!

Princess Leila/Leah is approximately 3 years old, came in recently as a stray, badly matted. She will be leukemia tested, all shots, spayed and groomed before being placed up for adoption. She has already been cleared of parasites. She has an exceptionally loving personality and does not seem to mind other animals around. Very curious. Good with all family members including children.

Tucker is a domestic short hair gray /white about 2 1/2 years old. He is neutered and declawed. Tucker prefers to be the only cat in the household. He is good with adults, but he needs a home with no children. He is declawed, but he doesn’t tolerant any playing – just wants to be admired. Adopt fee $25.

Donna is a 13-year-old, spayed, declawed female cat. Leukemia tested, all updated shots, distemper & rabies. Cleared of any fleas, worms, etc. She has always been an inside cat because of the declaw. Owners are overseas for a year. Nice family pet. Shy with other pets, but just ignores them. Very good with people. Loves being loved. She has started losing a little weight in the shelter and we really want to get her placed in a loving home as soon as possible. Adoption Fee: no fee we just want a nice home for her.

Donna was adopted after being seen at our outreach support location, Tractor Supply, on the Houlton Road in Presque Isle.

Adoptions Are By Appointment

Due to social distancing, the Adoption Center remains closed to casual visitors. All adoptions are conducted by appointment, seven days a week. Adoption appointments can be made for all available pets dogs, cats and small animals.

All adoptions are on a first come, first served basis and we are unable to hold pets for any reason. – . , . . Because we have limited appointment slots available each day, you must speak to a staff member directly to book your appointment. Leaving a voicemail or sending an email will not result in an appointment.

When you call, please have a specific pet in mind though you are able to meet multiple animals, as available, during your visit. As always, adoptions are first come, first serve, meaning the person who calls first gets their choice of available appointment times and thus his/her choice of animals to meet and adopt. We are not able to extend holds on any animals at this time, so we ask interested adopters to make their adoption decision during their appointment and be prepared to take their new pet home with them.
