Adopt A Free Cat Or Kitten At The Humane Society Of Harford County And Receive A Free Feline Wellness Exam

FALLSTON, MD Around the state, 20 animal control and adoption centers are offering free cat and kitten adoptions through the end of July in hopes of helping 2,000 cats and kittens find homes. The Humane Society of Harford County is among those participating in the free adoption event, called the “Maryland 2,000.”

The promotion coincides with the deluge of kittens born during the summer months.

For some, summer is a time to slow down a bit, relax at the pool or head to the beach, Humane Society of Harford County Executive Director Jen Swanson said in a statement. But for animal shelters in Maryland and across the nation there is nothing slow about summer. In fact, its one of the busiest times of the year when all of our shelters see a huge influx of kittens and cats born during the warm spring and summer months, known as Kitten Season.

Now in its second year, the Maryland 2,000 promotes cat and kitten adoptions during this busy time by offering felines for free during the month of July.

Adoptions increased by 26 percent altogether at the shelters that participated in 2017 compared with the year before, and they were able to help 2,395 cats and kittens find homes.

How To Choose A Reputable Breeder

Moving Sale

Just like puppy mills, any animal in the pet trade can be produced in a mill environment. Cat and kitten mills often have horrendous conditions for both parents and kittens, leaving animals susceptible to disease and chronic health conditions. Kittens are also exploited for profit and robbed of vital developmental experiences, such as maternal bonding and socialization with cats and humans.

These kittens are often removed from their mothers early and offered for sale online and in pet stores. Kittens that dont sell may end up in testing facilities and laboratories. Aside from supporting these unethical practices and deplorable conditions, purchasing a kitten mill kitten can mean a life of emotional and physical problems.

Naturally, kitten mills dont advertise themselves as such. If you want to avoid getting a kitten mill kitten, look for reputable breeders, not pet stores or online classifieds. Reputable breeders care about their kittens wellbeing and the home theyll end up in, often asking potential owners to sign a contract with specific guidelines for spaying and neutering, breeding rights, declawing, and more. A good breeder will also wait until the kitten is emotionally and physically ready to go to their forever home, usually at 12 to 16 weeks, and will encourage potential owners to visit or inquire about the breeding conditions.

Doing Due Diligence And Looking For Tica And Cfa Certifications

Buying a Siberian cat is a big deal, buying any cat or pet is for that matter. It makes sense to do some due diligence before rushing into a decision.

When deciding on a breeder you want to buy from, a couple of things I recommend doing are:

Looking online for reviews from previous customers This is not always easy to find, as they may not have many previous customers and not many people go out of their way to leave a review somewhere.

Looking for professional certifications Two of the professional certifications breeders and catteries can obtain are from The CFA and TICA .

It doesnt mean that you shouldnt work with a breeder if theyre not affiliated with any professional organizations, its just added peace of mind.

Ultimately, you need to be as comfortable as you can be that youre buying a kitten from a breeder you trust.

Additional Resources For Siberian Cat Owners

Its hard to bring a Siberian into your home without being fascinated by these magnificent Russian creatures.

So, I thought Id share some additional resources that might come in handy if you want to meet other Siberian owners online:

Siberian cats on Reddit Reddit has one of the largest online communities for everything from people who love pancakes to Siberian owners.

If you want to share pictures of your new kitty, or maybe find out more about what its like living with a Siberian you should drop into this subreddit.

Adoptapet.com I thought Id include a link to Adoptapet, just in case you cant find a new kitten or an expected litter from a breeder near you.

Adoptapet is one of the largest online resources that connect shelters, catteries, and rescues across the U.S. with cats needing homes.

You never know, you might find a Siberian in need of a new home you simply cant pass on. Itll be a lot less expensive, too.

How Much Are Siberian Cats

$56,000,000 Bel Air Architectural Estate 11490 Orum Road, Bel-Air California

There is a long list of things that can affect the price of a Siberian, so its almost impossible to give you an accurate estimate.

That said, I looked at 10 popular breeders, and taking into account their pricing its fair to say you can expect to pay somewhere in the range of $1,500-$4,000.

Something to look out for are breeders that charge a lot more for cats with low Fel D1 allergens or show quality pedigree.

If you just want a Siberian as a housepet on a budget, its worth calling around and making this clear to breeders.

We are pleased to announce that on June 4th Cat Sense will start allowing clients into the hospital on a limited basis. We will allow one person only to accompany their cat into the hospital for the appointment, and will continue to offer curbside appointments for clients who are more comfortable with that option.

We are confident that you will continue to support us as we navigate the transition back into our normal operating routines. We do not have a set timetable for this process, but we will inform you about changes as we move forward.

Before moving into the nuts and bolts of how our transition process will work, we will briefly describe our mask policy:

Regardless of vaccination status, all clients will be required to wear a mask that fully covers the mouth and nose at ALL times when in the building, even when they are alone in the exam room with their cat/s. This policy is non-negotiable. Clients who do not comply will be asked to leave the building immediately , and the appointment will continue as a curbside appointment.

Our new protocol will proceed much like our current curbside service system:

Why Siberians Are Good For Allergy Sufferers

“The One” mansion in Bel-Air lists for $295 million

Im sure youve heard that Siberians are one of the few breeds of cats that are hypoallergenic.

This is in fact true, although I have to point out that it still comes down to the severity of the individuals allergies and the cat.

The science behind this is that there is an allergen called FelD1 that causes allergies. Cats produce this allergen when they groom themselves and it easily becomes airborne.

Siberians are known to produce much fewer amounts of FelD1, but they do not produce 0% of this allergen.

Everyone Ive spoken to with allergies has been fine around Siberians, but I thought it was still worth mentioning that.

Don’t Miss: Why Is My Cat Shaking His Head

Are Siberian Cats Good Family Pets

Although a lot of people seek out Siberian cats because they are hypoallergenic, there is a long list of reasons why there are excellent family pets.

Its the personality of a Siberian that wins most people over. They are friendly, intelligent, curious, and social.

If youre after an independent house cat that you rarely interact with, Siberians are not for you.

They love human interaction, get on well with other animals, and will demand a lot of playtime while theyre still kittens.

Theyre low maintenance and their coats are a lot easier to manage than they may look, too.

As long as you brush them a couple of times per week, which is more fun than it is a chore, their coats should stay in top condition.

So, if youre after a fun, interactive, and playful kitten to become the latest member of your home, I recommend adopting a Siberian.
